Description

IAATN - Skirt Lifter

It's all about the numbers (IAATN), every geocacher knows that. This series (of which this is the first hidden) is dedicated to those caches that are only about building your stats.

This one is inspired by a style of cache that according to the GC forums is common in the USA. Apparently many lightpoles in carparks have a skirt on them that can be lifted and a micro (probably an eclipse tin that doesn't seal properly) can be placed under it providing nice camoflague in an urban environment for a quick driveby.

I wondered if this was going to be possible to do here in the ACT. I racked my brain trying to think if there was a lightpole with a skirt on it so I can hide a cache to boost numbers here in the capital, because lets face it Cankid and Tankengine can only put out a couple hundred a year so the rest of us have to start pulling our weight. There was one I vaguely remembered, and if I was correct then it also came with a nice view. Pulled up in the car hoped out to check and sure enough it was suitable for my requirements. Unfortunatly I left the eclipse tin at home so I had to make do with what I had. Luckily though though like all good things in Australia I was able to make it big, similar to the big banana or big potato, so this cache is a regular.

Please be sure to hide it exactly as you find it so it stays out of muggle view and as always make sure the muggles don't see you when you recover it. :D

To avoid most of the spikey bushes climb up the exposed rock then near the top you will see a small trail off to your left. Follow that for about 15ish metres then head directly to the cache.

This one could do with some TLC as the cache was wet and so was the log book.

Log could do with replacement and a new cache container.

Had a decent walk back to the car without any caches to find, then remembered about GA.
Saw this cache so decided to detour past it.

Everything was just lying on the ground, completely uncovered. No idea how the cache container could fit under the skirt either.

Might need some maintenance!

Thanks

Quick hike up with fitzy this morning. Love the cache.

GCA 1930. Found this one this morning with minniek.

We decided a short but sharp climb this morning would get the blood pumping - lol ! Got to GZ and enjoyed this one immensely ! Having found a few skirt caches in the USA I found this quite amusing.

Thanks Cantanga !!

I approached this from below and found a nice animal trail to follow. Easy peasy. No prickly bushes. I was a but stumped when i first read the description then had a good old belly laugh when I saw GZ. Brilliant. Very Happy I had to do a bit of maintenance. The camo had fallen over and no longer shed light on the surrounding area. I put it back as best as possible but couldn't figure out how this sized cache fit under the camo. I did my best, thanks for the laugh. Loved it. Clapping

Ahhh, so that's what is meant by a skirt lifter, all good. Was riding the Mountain bike along the Fire/Powerline trail and saw the gully ahead where the cache would be. I decided then to contour along the hillside 100m from the cache and along an animal trail; excellent, it got me to within 12m of the cache easily and no prickle bushes. Then a short easy scramble to find and sign, Thanks.

Still there and all good to continue being found

F(H)ound it! 12:20pm

Cantanga (and family) have invited me out while they do a maintenance run on his caches. So now I have logged my first GCA cache, its time to get my numbers up. We climbed up a mini-scar, made treacherous with the recent rain. Glad for the new "grippy" boots and the RP giving me a pull. Then a scramble through scrubby scratchy bushes (you did warn me). Then I found the cache! Hahahahahahahahaha! That's just silly Very HappyVery HappyVery Happy . Of course I found an (slightly) easier route out.
The rocks are beautiful and the view is pretty spesh, even though we are nowhere near the top. Fairy nests were found in the gully WinkWink Thanks for the cache cantanga

Very impressive cache! Took quite a bit of scouring since our various iPhone maps weren't too accurate but we were determined and it was very much worth it! Thank you so much for all the effort you put into it! We greatly appreciate it! Very Happy

872. Many apologies Cantanga but somehow I managed to miss logging a couple of GCA caches from this day.

A fantastic and fun hide that I really enjoyed - well except for the undergrowth I managed to plough through.

It was a slippery route to this one, especially up the stony water course, with damp slippery rocks. Lots of bushes to shove through, but in the fast failing light we made it. Then it was back down the hill, through those bushes, in even darker conditions. TFTC cantanga.

We had to work to get this one, making our way up the damp, slippery slope, shoving through prickly bushes. And all this in the late evening when it was almost dark. In fact, torches were needed for the last part of the return walk. TFTC cantanga.

Well I wasn't expecting that. Great cache. On approach I thought that the cache was a little exposed. No, not at all. It is under that skirt. LOL. Great one cantanga.

This was the first cache that I found. I was deLIGHTed by it. I found it a couple months back but have only started logging on the website today. I appreciate the effort and I love the spot you chose. Razz

Like others, I took the hard way in. Came straight up from the powerline trail and 'Eeny meeny' and golly were there a lot of prickle bushes! Earned my T3 for sure!! Once at GZ, a lengthy search ensued while trying not to slip over on the still damp rocks. In time, I sadly gave up - logged as dnf on the GPSr and began the walk out. In short order I changed my mind and decided to leg it up to my next target so changed direction and what do you know, stumbled across this cache! GPS had me only a couple of metres off today but in the dense bush that made all the difference (hypoglycemia may also have contributed Wink). Very glad to have made the find in the end and a very neat construction. I quite like the skirt lifter caches in the US - you know exactly what you're in for Razz. Thanks catanga

Found on a quick morning caching run in Tuggeranong. A short walk on Mt Taylor, which is a very familiar area for geocaching. Though, while it was a nice area, we did get caught up with the bush bashing - but that was just because we went the wrong way. If you go the right way, it is very simple. A very nice homage to a cool USA hide. TNLNSL. TFTC cantanga! Clan Cerberus

I think I'm going to have to return to GZ and possibly find a new location after all these are meant to be easy Razz . I don't remember coming across heaps of prickle bushes. Sure there was one or two, but nothing like others are saying. Are people coming up the creek bed or bashing in from some other direction?

#GA374 - 17:45; After an entertaining morning at the 2014 Canberra Cache of the Year Awards Event, I joined a posse of intrepid cachers in Sol de lune, fitzy_1965 and half of team lokipagan for a trip to Corin in search of a new trig. After a successful mission, I headed off home solo and decided to grab a couple more on the way. I mentioned to Sdl and fitzy that I might grab this one on the way home, but all that produced was a cryptic comment from Sol. I had logged another of the CO's caches on the way to getting this one, so once I had arrived at GZ, made the find and signed the log, I gave Sol a call to make sure I hadn't overlooked anything Think. Much to my relief I hadn't, so I departed content Whistle. TFTC Cantanga Clapping

Ha ha - very funny! I must say - the camo was so good, if it wasn't for the accurate coordinates, I don't think I would ever have found it! Razz Mind you, I decided on the MOST PRICKLY approach to this one possible! What was the aim here - wack a cache in the prickliest corner of Mt Taylor? Very Happy Thanks cantanga.

07-Feb-15
Oh, nicely done cantanga......having found lots of these in the US over a few trips, I sort of knew what to expect....but of course things are not as you always see them. Speaking of seeing, Boots comment makes perfect sense now as well.

All up, good fun...thanks for the hike and the placement.

06-Feb-15
Whilst clambering around on Mt Taylor after work I came across a massive area of prickle bushes, what more of an indicator a cache resided nearby, so in I went, paying my fees in blood and finding a structure necessary for a cache of this type. A very impressive installation here. Thanks

Albida.

Spotted this one while at work, So called in on the way home. A nice little wander up the hill via the rocky route and I soon found myself at GZ. It appeared that a critter had already lifted the skirt but I was happy to find a blank logbook. Yeah a *FTF*. Glad it wasn't dark because there seem to be a power issue. I wished I had some swaps with me because those magnets looked like fun.
Thank you for the cache.
