Description

Winter is Coming: A dragonZone Game from Geocaching Australia

Noted for its scientific value and unusual landscape, the Long Forest is a small and isolated remnant of mallee vegetation only 50 kilometres from Melbourne. Today, mallee vegetation is widespread in Victoria's dry north-west, but some thousands of years ago, during a warmer and drier period, it extended much farther south. Subsequent climatic changes favoured other vegetation such as box and stringybark eucalypts and the Long Forest is now the only naturally occurring mallee south of the Great Dividing Range. About 200 bird species have been recorded in the reserve. It is an important habitat for raptors such as the Wedge-tailed Eagle and Peregrine Falcon. Mammals include kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, echidnas, possums and gliders. In addition, there is a wide range of insects. There are 12 species of bullants found in the reserve, two of which occur nowhere else in Victoria. Bull Mallee (Eucalyptus behriana) is the dominant tree species in the Long Forest and because of the absence of major fires, some stands are believed to be several hundred years old. There are many other tree and shrub species, some usually associated only with semi-arid areas and a number of rare native grasses and orchids.

The cache you seek is a 2 liter sistema container encapsulated in an ammo can for durability.

Winter is Coming is all about geocaching during the cold weather, the challenge of controlling dragonZones and your own obsession with completing goals and earning dZPoints. These challenges and points are in addition to your normal dragonZone points. Your normal dragonZone points will also be accrued towards your total in this game. There are a number of different challenges to choose from during this game. Some will be easy. Some will be tough. Some may be impossible. Challenges can be accomplished more than once. The game software will calculate your points as you log your geocaches at Geocaching Australia. Challenges are there to give your points a boost and you are not required to achieve any challenge in order to participate in the game. Simply being a dragonZone game member will allow you to participate. Once you have collected your first points in the game, you will appear on the ladder. All points collected from all dragonZone activities will count towards your position on the ladder. This includes standard finds, daily dZPoints, challenge bonus points, trophy points and any points awarded by the game administrators.

After such an enjoyable day finding GCA caches yesterday I returned today to have fun again. I know Long Forest Road well and its unique history. Not so sure about the dragon zone stuff though.
Really just happy to find your caches because of the accurate co-ordinates and clean well stocked containers.
Today Tag along joined me in my quest. He too enjoyed the finds and the walk in this area.
Thanks for the fun caughtatwork

Making our way back to Melbourne to catch the Spirit home after our short mainland excursion and decided to tackle this group of caches as our last hurrah. The weather was threatening so had to make the circuit as quickly as possible. Almost made it before the rain started but really enjoyed the stroll in the bush. With this one we lost satellites at one point, after a bit of fretting they dropped back in and off we went again. TFTC

Onward to #5. We were glad that the path headed upward away from the nearby houses. A small kangaroo hopped away as we approached GZ where we again found a good sized, well stocked cache.
We enjoyed the open nature of this area and the lack of weedy undergrowth such as bracken fern and blackberries that often proliferate in areas like this in Tasmania.
Thanks caughtatwork for another cache in this series.

Main goal for the day was to head out to this area and take a walk around to find the new-ish caches. A little wet under foot but it wasn't actually raining, so all went well and the caches found without issue. Appreciated the good size, and well stock containers.

This was another interesting area that I haven't visited before....even though I drove the nearby highway every day for a couple of years. Things in your backyard and all that.....

Thanks caughtatwork......a neat way to spend an hour or so.

Found 10.15am

At least it's nice and flat round here and not too hard to get from one cache to another despite the lack of tracks.

Took nothing
Left KOT - Proud Grandparents - Again pathtag.

Google maps showed a track that headed across this way but I couldn't find it. A walk in the bush was very pleasant although it was all a bit quiet, gray and just a touch spooky.
Thanks caughtatwork.
