Description

The Ruins of the past, slowly being consumed by nature

This cache is near the remains of an old sawmill.

Theres a little bit of the mill that remains, so have a look around. It's an interesting little diversion.

Those who are keen 4wd'ers can continue up this road to the Emu Flats track that comes out at Weldborough.

Logs

This was a quick find but we didnt see anything of an old mill, maybe its been cleaned up or we didnt go into the bush enough, we laughed about TazScout finding this and the last cache exactly a year ago.

On the map the road ended just here but we drove on and found someone camping and that the road did carry on but within the first 100m it was not looking that good so we turned round and went back the way we had come.

thanks for the cache.

We had a laugh when we found this cache and saw our caching buddy TazScout had logged this exactly one year before us! It was a quick find after a long drive. We didn't look into the bush for relics as we still had a lot we wanted to do. We checked the road further ahead but decided to turn around and go to our next destination the long way.... just to be sure we got there.
Thanks CraigRat

Found this cache on this day last year it seems I forgot to log it.
Thanks to SS Rat and Goose & Egg for sending me a headsup and logging the cache exactly a year to the day from when we were there. Very Happy

#GA4100 - 09:10; I wasn't planning a caching day today, but with double dZ points on offer, I decided to get out nice and early for a quick trip and collect some of the newer caches around the north east, which have appeared since my last visit in some places I'd never been, or had not visited for many years. Collected a couple of GC caches in Branxholm before heading out to the Mt Paris Dam then on to Derby for coffee and a cache before heading to the Frome Dam. Continued on from the dam to make a quick find on this cache, before turning around and heading towards Pioneer. I'll be back for the others along this road on another trip. Found with Toolbox and VK7HCH and muggle Steve on our 4 day NE trip.
A quick find after driving along Garabaldi Rd from Pioneer.
Had a look around but only found logs and no old mill equipment.
Thanks for the cache Craigrat!

The weather forecast for today looked pretty rosy, so decided to head to the far north east to round up some caches.

Usually I have my old canine buddy Sirius with me but sadly his age now precludes him from doing any more bushwalks and mountain climbs, but as soon as I had put my hat and boots on, Murder(the younger of the two canine family....4 yo) started to get pretty excited as he just loves both bush walking and travelling around in the geo fourby.

My eldest canine...Sirius...is now too old(16.10 y.o. or 103 in human yrs) to leave the comfort of his bed in front of the wood heater...which has an electric blanket of course(which he just loves and is great for his arthritis). Having walked 100's of km's with me geocaching over the years up numerous mountains, bush walking along many trails plus along vast stretches of beaches etc while geocaching, he has certainly earned his rest..an amazing companion who never gave up no matter how hard it got for him...a truly remarkeable and treasured companion.

Set off around 0640 with the road traffic being fairly quiet. After 2.5 hrs or so, we arrived at our first cache destination at Derby which was awash with mountain bikers.

Thankfully, where the cache "Derby Diving" was hidden it was all quiet away from the muggles.Found the cache with accurate coords but the log was all soggy, so replaced with a new one in a new ziploc.

Looks like it would have been an awesome spot once apon a time for the Derby youngsters in the middle of summer.

Many thanks for the cache robtas in a top location.

The next cache "The Old Mill" was a reasonable drive away along Frome Rd.May have been here in the past looking for a geocache near the Frome dam. Quite a nice size and looks pretty fishy.

On approaching gz the plantation timber on the right had been harvested and started wondering if the cache was still there.Parked up on a grassy spot and headed to gz where the cache hide was spotted straight away. Signed the log and found the cache is all in good nick.

Had a poke around the old mill site and saw mother nature reclaiming the old site with lots of rusty iron and an almost rusted through axle attached to the wheel which itself looked in good condition...possibly cast iron.

Many thanks craigrat for a top cache in another great location and another spot I'd of never seen but for geocaching...cheers ST.

Hi CraigRat
After arriving in St Helens yesterday and spending the night at Killraine Units the plan today was to find caches in the Weldborough, Blue Tier and Moorina areas. The round trip consisted of driving 160 kilometres and finding a total of 12 caches which required walking some 13.25km using a total of 17842 steps and burning a total of 1859 calories.

WEATHER: After the rain and hail in St Helens last night, I was totally surprised to have a bright, sunny day for the entire day's caching. Temperature got to about 16 or 18 degrees. Great day!

Moved from "Wheely Big Drop" to look for this cache. (Enjoying driving through this forest - first time here for me - never knew it existed prior to this caching experience. Even the camping and day use area here is well kept. What a brilliant area!!)
From where I found the last cache to this one required I drive some distance to get to GZ. Got to just short of Moorina and noticed there was a cache just past the turn off I needed to take. Went to its ground zero and made a very quick find on GC6AX6W "Flintstone parking lot." That done it was back into the cache mobile and head up a road I had only been partially along prior to today. Frome Road was surprisingly good to drive but Emu Road at the other end was not so pleasant - turned around went back to the Tasman Highway via the route I came in and then on to Welborough after completion of "The Old Mill" cache.

As I approached ground zero evidence of recent forestry work was prominent. Ground clearing, stacked piles of wood and logs. Once here, it was find a parking spot and walk to GZ true.

A short walk around the area was had taking photographs and then to look for the cache. It remained illusive for a short period of time an easy find was had once I found the right log. luckily, there had been no or little rain here over night as the ground was dry.

Subsequently, the log was signed and the cache Sainted 1230hrs. Replaced as found, the cache is in good condition and so is the log. A magnificent little spot. Glad I looked around a little bit more before heading back to the car as I would have missed some more of the old mill. One muggle car drove passed as I was returning to the car.

From here, my next find, I hope will be "Weldborough Cemetery." A bit of a drive coming up for that one to be found.

Thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience of coming to this cache. Thank you.

At days end back in St Helens a most welcome shower was had, dinner taken at the Ex-Servicemen's Club and back to the unit for rest.
TFTC and cheers
OldSaint.

After grabbing Frome Home, I continued on in hope I could get through to the general GZ area. Luck was with me as I didn't encounter any issues like the 2y'stassie and after a neat little drove I was in the right area. Head in towards GZ and soon saw the old equipment. After a look there it was onto the cache. Took a few looks in deep dark holes but eventually, after a second look in one, the prize was revealed. Log was signed and all was good.

Thanks Craigrat...and interesting insight into our past.....*Recommended* as others should get of the black stuff and try this one.

After our failed attempt to get to the area of this cache last Wednesday, we returned today hoping that the trees which had restricted our path had been cleared. We were feeling a little pessimistic when we came to the first of the trees and it was still over most of the road but as happened last Wednesday, we were still able to squeeze around the end. It was the same for the second and three trees partially blocking the road. It looked as though our luck would be out today. However, as we came around the corner to where a large tree had been blocking the road completely, we were elated to see that a chainsaw had been in action and that the road was clear with cut logs to the sides. We pushed on. There were still a few more trees partially blocking the road but we were able to negotiate our way around those quite easily.

It wasn't long when we pulled up about 50m from GZ. After a short walk, accurate coordinates and the hint led to a quick find. The cache and contents were in good condition. There being no other entries in the logbook, we will claim FTF at 14:35. Thanks for another cache CraigRat in another interesting area.

After replacing the cache, we looked around for a few minutes seeing some evidence of an old timber mill but very little remains as the forest reclaims the area.

Our intention today was to look for the four caches CraigRat placed in the area recently. Alas, we only found one.

We left the Tasman Highway and went down Frome Road. Rather quickly we came across two locations where two trees had been blown down (presumably in the storms of last weekend) but we were able to squeeze around the end. We were not so lucky when we approached a third tree barrier. It was a very large tree which completely blocked the road. It would have taken an hour or so with a good chainsaw to clear a path - and we didn't have a chainsaw nor the time. At this point we were 3.9km from GZ. Reluctantly, we turned around to go looking for the others.
