Description

Power Station View

The Port Coogee development stretches out from the lower slopes of the limestone ridge onto reclaimed sea-bed, with the outermost groin 100s of metres west of the original coastline. For many decades prior to the development, the coast between South Fremantle and Coogee was industrialised and the area was degraded and contaminated following the demise of local industries. The outlook from the old Cockburn Road was one of a desolate landscape, polluted and ugly, albeit with the sparkling blue waters of Cockburn Sound beyond. Hence this development and others taking shape to the north are perceived as revitalising for this stretch of coast.

What is not widely known is that there were once natural limestone cliffs in the area and that these were blasted away for this development. Below the devastation of the cleared industrial land was a white, sandy, safe beach bordered by the cliffs - a serene, tranquil setting invisible to passing motorists. To me, it is a shame that this little beach was not preserved in a development more sympathetic to what was left of the natural environment, and for this reason I am not a fan of Port Coogee.

However, it happened, it's here and there are cache hiding opportunities. So be it.

The cache is a 200 ml Sistema.

No luck for us here today. The views are awesome and the houses being built in this area are just as impressive.

Headed out through the pouring rain after work today to grab thius one. Wow - a long time since this was last found - and its sitting quite nicely in its hidey hole. Good view of the old power station as you'd imagine !
