Description

Ultimo Power House - Historic Engineering Marker #27

The Ultimo Power House was the first large central power station to be constructed in NSW, and by 1905 was for a time, the largest in Australia. Its construction was part of major social progress in the City of Sydney in the form of the introduction of an extensive electric tramway network. At its peak the Sydney tram system was reckoned to be the second largest in the British Empire.

Contents of the plaque:

ULTIMO POWER HOUSE

Constructed between 1897 and 1899 by the Department of Public Works for Sydney's tramway network. This was the first large power station in New South Wales. Initially it comprised four reciprocating steam engines driving 850 kilowatt direct current generators. Alternating current generators operating at 25 cycles were added from 1902 and turboalternators from 1905. The state's first pulverised coal fired boilers were commissioned here in 1923. By 1942 the station's capacity had grown to 79.5 megawatts. It was decommissioned in 1963.

DEDICATED BY THE INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERS, AUSTRALIA. 1994

When logging this virtual, please add a photo of yourself or your GPSr at the plaque.

Unsure if this plaque is publically accessible anymore. That grey gate has never been open whenever I've been past.

In Sydney on a business trip (a very scary one; I was having my capability assessed!) and I decided to de-stress with some geocaching. I spent the whole morning walking around the city (the assessment was cruelly at 1pm! Get it over with!) and this was my final stop before I headed in to meet my fate. Pray I passed a school group out the front and I swear, their teacher/guide person knew I was on edge because she got the kids to scream at the top of their lungs just as I'd passed. I jumped and bolted down the stairs in case they did it again. I found the plaque easily enough and was on my way back to the office. TFTC Team MavEtJu

Dropped of my daughter at UTS and decided to leave the car and started walking, first the immediate area, then I wandered off to black wattle bay, followed the water for a bit and returned to Ultimo via Glebe. Although the weather wasn't that great it made for good caching. Enjoyed all the little alleys and shortcuts i could take by being on foot and already decided to go the same way next time! Answers are send soon.

I had a couple of tries at logging this cache during a recent trip to Sydney. First time the area was locked up, but a couple of days later, in business hours, it was a walk up and snap!

Discovered that No_Tomorrow was in town today so we decided to pick up a few caches in the area. Thanks to Geocube, I realised that there were a few virtuals on our route. Arrived at the Powerhouse but approached from the wrong side. When we realised where we had to go, we saw no obvious entrance, until we saw that we could go through the cafe. Marker found and photographed.

Had a few hours to kill between trains in Sydney today so decided to cache my time away. I was lucky to get to finally meet Ziggiau and do a little caching with her. This was one of them.

We guessed the location wrongly at first, then thought we had to access it in Powerhouse business hours, but then last second noticed a child playing near it so found a way in (during cafe business hours). YAY!

Made temporary log so I didn't forget my finds. haha

We were in Sydney for the weekend and I had a few hours to stroll around the area to pick up a few caches I started my stroll at the Exhibition LRT station and wound my way past Wentworth Park and finished at Glebe LRT station

Yhis was my first stop along the way and the GPS led me directly to the spot.

I had to wait for a couple of muggles to enter before I could take the snap.

#GA821 - 09:05; I was staying in Pyrmont for a couple of days and headed off on my usual morning wander while the geohoney made ready for the day. I collected a nearby GC puzzle, which was long solved, but until today not collected and then a couple of others in this series before continuing on towards Chinatown. The construction work in this area presented a bit of a challenge, but the lift at the Aquatic Centre came in handy and saved a bit of backtracking. The Museum was not yet open and I feared that I may not have been able to get access to the plaque, but the little cafe on the lower level provided a way in and I was soon at GZ taking a snap. Again, I'm guessing I can claim *FTF* honours as the CO is the only previous finder (please let me know if this is not the case Very Happy ). Nice to be back in the area today and TFTC Team MavEtJu, looking forward to collecting a few more of these this visit ClappingClan Cerberus

Found it while doing a walk around Pyrmont. I should have trusted the coordinates, since they were 100% correct.
