Description

Bendemeer Bridge - Historic Engineering Marker #81

Completed in 1905, it is one of the first examples of the Dare truss designed by H H Dare in 1903 and placed in service from about 1904 until at least 1912. This type was a composite Howe truss bridge with timber upper chords and compression diagonals, a metal lower chord and metal tension rods for the verticals. It was designed for spans of 22.4m and 31.7m. The Bendemeer Bridge is of considerable age for a timber bridge; The span is also considerable for a timber truss bridge. The bridge is thus of considerable technological significance.

The bridge carries a 52m roadway and has spans of 9m, 10.6m, 10.6m, 10.5m, 31.6m, 9.3m and 9.2m. The six approach spans are timber girders. The main span is a half through composite truss of the Dare type. The main piers are concrete.

The contents of the plaque:

Public Works engineer Harvey Dare designed this composite steel and timber truss bridge. It was constructed by promlnent bridge builder W F Oakes and opened on 29 September 1905. The truss type, now known as a Dare truss, was the zenith of timber truss development, being technically superior to previous types. The bridge was in service for the New England Highway for 80 years before being bypassed in 1985.

While doing all caches around town I found this one as well.

A quick stop on our way through to Tamworth. This old bridge was built pretty high over the river, yet the newer one looks like more of a causeway? A grand old structure for sure....

Day 31 Mainland trip
After leaving Tamworth, we stopped in Bendemeer to find the Historic Engineering Marker. I would think they would need to use this bridge if the river level rises! Another in the series ticked off. TFTV

Day three of our trip south to the Mega and left Armidale bright and early. Parked closed and walked over. Took the photo and then went and had a good look at the bridge. A local came over and enquired if we needed help and I explained that I collect photos of these markers. Then I got a condensed 10 minute version of the bridge and the little town. TFTC Team MavEtJu. On 'my way home' from a large 'circuit' from Wingham/Port Macquarie/Kempsey/Wollomombi/Guyra/Uralla, and now Bendemeer, for the purpose of getting some trigs, and quite a few Waymarks, I saw this delightful Truss Bridge, and knew that I should also photograph it, even if the sun was setting. Grabbed a photo of the plaque @ 1712, Sunday, 23 July, before getting a few of the bridge itself.
Thanks.

I recall driving over this bridge when the highway passed through Bendemeer but today walked across it after finding the marker.

Looks like they are converting this to a pedestrian bridge. Lots of bunting but some re-decking happening over the old surface.
Thanks, a nice easy one to access.

We made a detour off the New England Highway into Bendemeer to grab a photo of the plaque. We didn't need co-ordinates, we knew where it was from a previous visit to find a GCA traditional. Once the highway bypassed Bendemeer the old bridge has been used as a footbridge to cross the MacDonald River. Today maintenance signs were up and work was in process. Thanks for our second HEM Team MavEtJu.
