Description

King's Bridge - Historic Engineering Marker #17

A pathway, known as the King’s Bridge-Cataract Walk, and originally built by volunteers in the 1890s, runs along the north bank of the Cataract Gorge, and is a popular tourist destination. The original toll house at which pedestrians had to pay to enter the walk can still be seen near King's Bridge on the northern edge of the gorge.

Contents of the plaque:

Completed in 1864 this beautiful wrough iron arch bridge with a span of 60 meters was designed by engineer William Thomas Doyne. It was fabricated in Manchester, England, transported to Launceston, assembled on a pontoon floated into position the lowered onto its abutments on the receding tide. The bridge provided a vital link with the West xxx region.

The duplicate adjoining span, fabricated by Salisbury's foundry in Launceston, was similarly erected and floated into position in 1904.

DEDICATED BY THE INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERS, AUSTRALIA, 1992.

When logging this virtual, please add a photo of yourself or your GPSr at the plaque.

I enjoyed the walk across this beautiful bridge to find the plaque. Of course being two plaques, I took a beautiful photo of the wrong one first, but thankfully realised my rookie error before leaving the scene. Thanks Team MavEtJu for organising the cache.

Mr T has lost count of the hundreds of times he's crossed this bridge, both by vehicle & on foot back when it stood alone. He grew up on top of Trevallyn hill so he used to walk home from the matric college on a regular basis. Never once did he stop to read the history, & as for it being a set of twins he was blissfully unaware. All now corrected even though it's taken over 40 years to do so. Thanks for the memories Team MavEtJu.

#GA889 - 10:40; Back in Tassie on family business, so the opportunity to collect a few more of the local caches was too good to pass up. I was on my way to a meeting in the city, but with a little time to spare, decided to grab a couple more finds. I'm not sure that the convenient park I found was quite what I used it for, but I was able to take the required snap and was quickly on my way again. TFTC Team MavEtJu Very HappyClan Cerberus

Quick Drive by virtual - found a close park and nipped across the road to take photos

Myself and Goose of GooseandEgg were up North today to attend an event to say goodbye to Choppersrule who is moving interstate, along with the prep for today we made a list of caches in the area that would be near where we would be in GSAK, due to its virtual icon it stood out and we said we would try and find this one if we had chance. After the event we were luck and got a park right next to GZ and short dash over the road and we were here.

Couple of quick snaps taken and we were off to the next after having a quick look at the bridge and views.

As we drove over Kings Bridge this morning I remarked to SSR it would be good to stop here on the way back after the event to log this cache by taking the obligatory photo. We noted 2 parking places across the road and not much else close by! As luck would have it there was only one car parked there on our return providing us the perfect opportunity to do it. We zipped over the road and took some snaps and had a bit of a look around. Although from the south, the egg and I have driven and walked over this bridge many, many times whether to walk up the Gorge or visit an old aunt of hers who lived up Gorge Road. Another Engineering Marker ticked off. TFTC

Have passed this spot dozens of times over the past few years when on the way to the gorge and have never noticed this plaque. Learn something new every day.. thanks..!!

Seeing the only 2 parking spots opposite were full and it was late in the day we were naughty and parked at GZ. Quickly grabbed the photo and then went on our way. Will have to return to read the plaque if it is not clear enough to read from our photo. Thanks.

Hi MavEtJu
Always enjoy visiting the gorge in Launceston and this one was no exception.
The most difficult part of finding this cache was obtaining a car park nearby.
That done, a walk across the bridge and the cache was Sainted at 1432hrs.
Great views here as well some great history.
TFTC and cheers
OldSaint.

Today we returned to King's Bridge to take the required photos as specified for this cache. We have walked over the bridge a number of times and have learnt about the history. the most interesting aspect to us was that one lane of the bridge was built in the United Kingdom and shipped to Launceston for assembly and placement. The other half was built in Launceston a little later to the plans of the original design and joined to the first structure. Apart from the different manufacturers plaques on opposite sides of the bridge and some differences in the supporting structures, the two halves appear as though they were constructed as one. We had seen the Historic Engineering Marker before but had not photographed it previously. That situation was corrected today. The required photos, with Mrs y'stassie at the plaque, have been added to the Gallery.
