Description

Trans-Australian Railway - National Engineering Landmark #22 - Kalgoorlie Station

When the Trans-Australian Railway joined eastern and western Australia in 1917 it provided a physical link which was to be of major commercial and strategic importance and which improved immeasurably the convenience and comfort of interstate travelers. The railway was also symbol to all Australians of the bonds which had bound the colonies together in Federation.

The Trans-Australian Railway was the first major public work to be undertaken by the Commonwealth Government and at that time it was the largest construction project ever undertaken in Australia. It was built through some of the most inhospitable country to have been traversed by railway in Australia to that date, most of which country was largely uninhabited by Europeans and lacked adequate water supplies. It is still the longest railway ever built at any one time in Australia (1682 km).

The railway’s construction operations were unique because, due to the lack of developed infrastructure along the route, the constructing authority had to arrange the complete supply logistics for up to 3000 men working on the railway, in addition to the supply of all the engineering plant and materials and the care of hundreds of horses and camels.

When it commenced operation, no other railway in the world was so completely self-contained. Commonwealth Railways ran its own farms and stores, and provisioned by rail the small communities along the line for which all the social and service infrastructure was provided. The railway had a number of unique operational features including the longest straight stretch of track in the world (478 km 193 m), and for twenty years from 1933, the longest run undertaken by coal burning steam locomotives, 867 kilometres from Cook to Kalgoorlie.

Note: The exact location of the marker is currently not known, except for "CFPP plaques at ticket office, Kalgoorlie Station". If you find it, please consider measuring the right location and make a copy of the marker.

When logging this virtual, please add a photo of yourself or your GPSr at the plaque.

The plaques are only accessible inside the Trans WA Kalgoorlie Booking Centre: Monday to Friday 6.30am to 3.00pm, Saturday 6:30am to 8:30am and Sunday 11:30am to 2:00pm.
This should be noted within the description. The coordinates are about 5metres out and put the location on the outside of the building and the plaques are inside.

After spending a few days in Gawler it was time for to drive my mums (well my car now) from Gawler back to Perth. This was day four travelling from Norseman to Kalgoorlie then onto Coolgardie on a 5 day 3,100km adventure.
There are hundreds of signs saying do not drive tired so geocaching helped with that.
The day turned out great taking in lots of sights at Norseman, Kambalda, Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie and only about 3ookm of driving instead of the 6-700km's.
Managed to get three gca caches up two towers before heading down into Boulder.
Then a short drive up to the reservoir to grab some photos and enjoy the view.
I found many caches during the adventure.

Having a break in Kalgoorlie. Just across the road from the railway station. Observed an SCT freighter go through followed shortly after by the Prospector.

We are travelling from Portland Victoria across to WA to see our daughter.

We are stranded in Kal for a few day as we are the victims of what we have now learned was unleaded petrol being added to the diesel tanks at Eucla. Many vehicles broke down across the Nullabor and we were one of the early ones. Now they want our car to be in Perth so we called in to buy train tickets and look what was here. TFTC

We have travelled from A (our home in SW of WA) to B via the Savannah Way from Broome to Cairns with a two week unexpected detainment in Mackay which has set us back two weeks, now sadly travelling back to A via the Outback Way from Winton to Laverton

Luckily we arrived while the office was open

Another great cache to find, unfortunately the doors were locked and we were unable to get into the Engineering mark to get a good photo, so a photo through the door was all we could get.

Railway Building was locked, included a photo of the plaque inside.

It was closed but we could see it through the window!!

Arrived at the station early this morning but everything was locked up and not to be opened until 11.30. Not a problem, headed off and grabbed some other caches and then returned later.
There was a muggle sitting at GZ but I think we managed the photo without her in it.
Thanks.

Nice to visit a piece of history here; TFTC!
Hit the road shortly after sunrise, into a forecast 37C day, finding a total 19 caches; 15 of these being dragonZone thus earning "Ides of March" trophy; with two FTF Trig's.

With the long weekend ahead, The jinta crew decided to head off for a massive weekend of driving to try and grab all of our remaining LGA’s to the South and the East. This was to be another step closer to fulfilling the last GC LGA challenge cache.

We headed off from our camp at Norseman nice and early today with the intention of collecting caches in Kalgoorlie, Coolgardie, Southern Cross and a few scattered in between. We were on a mission to get back to Perth today so kept the pedal to the metal and were only stoping to grab caches which were nice and easy! Cheers

With the huge distances we were looking to cover over a couple of days we had to highlight a select few caches to stop and grab, this cache was one of the ones we stopped for! TFTC

I haven't used the railway station for many years and it is sad to see that it is only a pale shadow of its glory days when people used the train more. The booking office was open so I snuck in and got my photo.

I believe I got this right – found in ticket office – walked in & there it was on the wall – only problem there was a woman sitting underneath to the side – so asked here if I could take the shots – didn’t want to mess around with GPS so it’s not in shot - – thanks for the history
