Description

Phoenix Foundry - Engineering Herritage Marker

The Phoenix Foundry was a very significant manufacturing business during its 50 years of operation. It was one of reputedly 40 foundries in Ballarat during the heyday of manufacturing in Victoria in the 1880s. It was a larger business although there were other large foundries in the city including the nearly Union Foundry which is known to have produced a number of very large Cornish pumping engines including a Cornish Bill engine supplied to a New Zealand mine.

The unfortunate reality of recognition of the Phoenix Foundry is that nothing remains of the foundry itself. This circumstance faces nominators with the task of finding some alternative “link” between the subject site and remaining relics, or other reminders, of the subject site.

In this case the existence of the railway turntable pivot foundation, adjacent to the foundry site but within a public street, provides the opportunity for a link between the Phoenix Foundry and a remaining relic associated with it.

When logging this virtual, please add a photo of yourself or your GPSr at the plaque.

For more information, please see the nomination PDF at the Heritage Register at the Engineers Australia website: https://www.engineersaustralia.org.au/portal/heritage/phoenix-foundry-1856-1906.

Anzac Day was probably an opportune time to find this one as we got a parking spot as close as you could possibly get to it.
The information on this one was right up Mr Beetle's alley and he spent time reading it all.
Thanks.

Came into town for a concert at The Maj. Had an early dinner and noticed a couple of nearby caches waiting for a *FTF* . And this virtual cache was between the two. We had no idea this plaque and the pivot was here. Thank you for bringing us here MavEtJu. Pic attached.

In Ballarat this afternoon with my son who is competing in the Victorian State Band Championship. Our agreement was that I could find some caches while we were here and I thought that he may be interested in this different style of cache.
I enjoyed finding this marker. It is the first one that I have found.

A day-trip to Ballarat for some caching (and one in particular to fill in the last few squares on my D/T grid), I took the time to walk around Stuart Street and its surrounds. This marker was on my must-do list today and (unlike the railway marker) quickly and easily found. Smile I also noticed a plaque in Stuart street about the foundry so I've included a photo of it too.

Found It!
This is the first of this series that I've found and it 500km away in Ballarat! I found the plaque late in the day after all the shoppers had gone home. See attached photos of the plaque (well it is more of a sign really). My GPS said it was at S37 33.804 E143 51.353 so the listed coords are pretty close. And some interesting history I never knew about! And a FTF to?
