Description

Cowra Bridge Truss - Historic Engineering Marker #13

The first bridge constructed at this site was an American all-timber McCallum truss bridge of three spans. It existed from 1868 until replaced in 1893 by a bridge designed by John A McDonald.
The McDonald bridge was the first in New South Wales to use a composite timber/iron truss and was the largest of its type in Australia. The bridge carried the busy north-south inland mad traffic for 93 years until 1986, when it was replaced.

John McDonald came from England. He joined the Department of Public Works, NSW in 1879 and from 1889 to 1893 was Engineer for Bridges. McDonald made a significant contribution to bridge design in NSW. His achievements include redesign in 1886 of the standard FIND truss to produce the "McDonald Truss"; design of all the lattice girder road bridges from 1884 to 1893; design c. 1884 of a series of sliding bridges at Lismore, Coopernook and Brine; and design of early bascule and lift bridges such as over the Darling River at Bourke in 1883. McDonald died in 1933.

In 1990 one of the McDonald truss spans that had been erected in Bryant Park, was awarded an Historic Engineering Marker plaque by The Institution of Engineers, Australia. However, it was demolished in 1999 because it had become unsafe.
The existing seven span bridge comprises two prestressed concrete, continuous box girders. It was designed by the then Department of Main Roads and opened in 1986.

A very quick find after setting up camp in the van park across the river from here. Unfortunately the low bridge is closed due to the high river levels after the recent rains.
Thanks Team MavEtJu.

More a sign than a marker but it does have the Aus Engineers tick of approval.

Picked up.on our way through Cowra today on the way to Dubno. The art work on the new bridge down at the river was fabulous too. TFTC

I had a busy caching morning in Cowra. Still nippy when I got the third for the day. Fascinating bridge history, and also interesting to see the low level timber bridge a few metres downstream of the main structure.

With it being really bloody hot, I decided to observe the Marker from a few metres away

Walked over to this from the visitor center with the girlfriend and located it at 3:14pm. We were visiting the area and I thought it would be great opportunity to do the caches in the area. As my camera is my GPS took a photo of me at the marker.

There is certainly some confusion with this one. Our GPS took us to the sign where there is no HEM plaque but there is some recognition by the engineering society in the bottom right hand corner of the info board. To cover all bases we grabbed a few different photos here, but this is definitely not your normal HEM marker.
Thanks.

I'm confused by the logs. Firstly, there is definitely no marker here. Just a couple of pieces of the remains and a history plaque. Great to see they have preserved the historic piece of engineering with this little group. Shame this one has nothing to see anymore though. The timber bridge I the other hand - I love crossing that instead of the concrete one every time we pass through.

On a mid-western run to Temora ....

Parked below the bridge (great artworks) and wandered over to the 'core'. Sign was not as expected but it gave a grasp of the history. Thanks for the virtual, Team MavEtju Smile

#GA957 - 16:20; Decided to swing through Cowra on the way home after a day trip to Grenfell with the geohoney and her muggle friend during the Henry Lawson Festival. After collecting a few caches around Grenfell while the girls did some retail therapy, we were now headed for home and collecting a couple more on the way. This one was only a short detour from the main drag and was easily spotted using the updated coords. Nice bit of history. TFTC Team MavEtJu Very HappyClan Cerberus

The marker was not at the co ords listed but down the other end of the car park closer to the bridge. Thanks for the marker. The old timber bridge is worth a little look.
