Description

Cache is a small green screw top container with logbook and pencil..

The river was originally named by Captain James Kelly the Retreat River after an unsuccessful attempt to navigate its treacherous entrance.Local folklore has it that the river was renamed after the infamous Alexander Pearce the cannibal convict captured on the southern bank after escaping from the Macquarie Harbour penal settlement.Pearce was said to have been a 'maker of pies' and to have had the nickname of 'the pieman'.In it's heyday during the gold rush,Corinna had a population of around 700 people and two hotels, one on each bank. This area also boasts the largest gold nugget ever found in Tasmania weighing in at 243oz or 6.7 kg. The cache is located along the boardwalk to the historic grave site.

"Hello sirius Tas thank you for the cache.

We arrived at the barge just as it was leaving so we had some time to come up and find your cache.
EeePees found it quickily while I had a quick look at the grave.

Found on Friday 22 October 2021 at 1153

Found during a weekend away with EeePees.

Hi and thanks for the cache.
Taking advantage of the Hobart show public holiday, and making a 4 day geocaching trip West, and then North West, with AlbyDangles.
This is one we found along the way, a nice quick find and explore while waiting for the barge.
Cheers, EPs.

After caching our way down the Western Explorer and doing the ones on the walks at Corinna we paid our $33 and crossed the Pieman on the Fatman. After getting the GC cache near the river bank we headed up to look for this one and check out the cemetery. A much shorter walk than we expected and the cache was exactly where it was supposed to be. The two graves look like they are well maintained too. Thanks.

Out and about caching with Tassie Trekkers after staying the night at Corinna. Beautiful reflections on the river today. Signed the log as it was replaced by Tassie Trekkers. A great spot for a cache. TFTC

Found on a caching adventure trip with whitewebbs, visiting Waratah, Corinna, Zeehan and Strahan.

After spending the night at Corinna we caught the barge and crossed the Pieman River - very calm this morning and nice reflections.

We searched according to hint but no luck. With the CO's permission we have replaced the cache with a small round screwtop container painted green, (added pic to gallery) consistant with the hint and placed a rock and branches in front of it to stop it slipping out.

Always love visiting this area, thanks Sirius for bringing us back.

Pretty sure this one is missing with such a precise clue. Interesting spot nonetheless.

Australia day for us was a circuit from Zeehan and back to Zeehan With stainless steel rat and TazScout. We headed up to the event in Waratah via a few stops in places Rosebery and Tullah then returned via Savage River and Corinna, replacing this cache on the way around with a container handed to stainless steel rat by the CO at the event, otherwise we may not have stopped but it was a fascinating little walk so I'm so glad we did.

Having chatted to the CO this morning he was happy for us to replace this cache and save him a trip.

Great location.

Today we decided to head to the West Coast. As there was an easterly weather system over Tasmania, the West Coast was fine and sunny with very little or no breeze - a magic day in the west.

This was our seventh and final cache hunt for today. Alas, we didn't have any success. Both our GPS units were pointing to a location consistent with the very precise hint but despite searching for about 20 minutes, we could not locate the cache. We even dug everything out from under the boardwalk (myrtle leaves are wonderful to run your fingers through) but nothing was found - surely we would not have missed a regular sized cache. We then wondered if a grumpy animal had evicted the cache from its hide. So we searched down the bank under the steps and to the bushes on either side - still no joy. We then went back to GZ for another look and then replaced all the material we had dug out. So Sirius Tas, we are sorry to report that we could not find the cache and we think that there is a high probability that it has gone missing already. Thanks anyway for the placement.
