Description
First use of ether for an operation in Australia
William Russ Pugh is credited with being the first doctor to use an anesthetic during an operation in the southern hemisphere. He was a surgeon at St John's Hospital in Launceston when he performed the operation in 1847. He performed this anaesthesia using a device that he made himself at home. It was copied from an apparatus that he had read about in the Illustrated London News (dated 9 January 1847). This demonstration of anaesthesia was only eight months after the world-first public demonstration of ether by William Thomas Green Morton on 16 October 1846 in Boston, US.
A bronze statue of William Russ Pugh is located in Princes Square in Launceston and the following questions can be answered from the information on the plaque on the step in front of the statue.
1. What date in June 1847 did William Russ Pugh perform his historic operation?
2. St John's Hospital closed not long after the operation. What is the building known as now?
3. What was the name of the sculptor who created the statue of William Russ Pugh?

Thanks again Sharnie's Tribe. We've had a good GCA caching trip around northern Tassie.
Had noticed the statue before but never stopped to read the plaque, so thanks for the interesting history lesson here.
Off track a bit, but I wish they'd paint the old church opposite. It's been such an eyesore for so long now.
Thanks.
Launceston has so much great and interesting history, and this cache is showing part of that.
