Description

First use of ether for an operation in Australia

William Russ Pugh is credited with being the first doctor to use an anesthetic during an operation in the southern hemisphere.  He was a surgeon at St John's Hospital in Launceston when he performed the operation in 1847.  He performed this anaesthesia using a device that he made himself at home. It was copied from an apparatus that he had read about in the Illustrated London News (dated 9 January 1847). This demonstration of anaesthesia was only eight months after the world-first public demonstration of ether by William Thomas Green Morton on 16 October 1846 in Boston, US.

A bronze statue of William Russ Pugh is located in Princes Square in Launceston and the following questions can be answered from the information on the plaque on the step in front of the statue.

1.  What date in June 1847 did William Russ Pugh perform his historic operation?

2.  St John's Hospital closed not long after the operation.  What is the building known as now?

3.  What was the name of the sculptor who created the statue of William Russ Pugh?

On a walk around Launceston and a few caches.

08-Sep-19
Drove to Launceston today to checkout a few shops and to have lunch at Hog's Breath Cafe. Whilst in Launny thought we should grab a few History caches as well. Decided to head over to Trevallyn to check out the dam and possibly pick up a couple of caches. Then headed home via Exeter. The main reason we went to Treyallyn Dam was to do a bit of recon work. I have never been there before. So I wanted to suss out the area so we can have a better plan to head back soon and walk the trails around the area. TFTC Clan Cerberus

After a great meal at the Thai cafe across the road we wandered into Princes Park well after dark to snap photos for two caches. We also dropped off a moveable gnome quite close to Mr Pugh.

Thanks again Sharnie's Tribe. We've had a good GCA caching trip around northern Tassie.

Mr beetle waited in the van while I slipped across the road to grab the information for this cache.
Had noticed the statue before but never stopped to read the plaque, so thanks for the interesting history lesson here.
Off track a bit, but I wish they'd paint the old church opposite. It's been such an eyesore for so long now.
Thanks.

Along with earthcaches, history caches & similar virtuals are our favourite types. Lots of opportunities to get immersed in history / geology. Education aplenty. Plus of course, you can paw all over GZ, take lots of photos & muggles couldn't care less about your "strange" behaviour. This is the second history visit to this park it didn't disappoint. Thanks Sharnie's Tribe

We love the history caches so we had to find this one quickly before dinner. We arrived back at a park we visited last time we were in town for a virtual. Guessing there might be a 3rd sometime too. Answers obtained quickly and the kids posed for a photo. Right dinner now! TFTC

We travelled to Launceston on Tuesday to look for the Weary Traveller series of caches, an Historic Engineering Marker and this history cache, which were all conveniently located in the same lovely park. So much to learn from this type of cache - they are one of our favourites, so thanks very much for this one sharnie's tribe.

Another reason to enjoy this hobby/sport? whatever this is? Great to learn about the history and the people that made Launceston what it is today.
This actually took me back to the place where I found my very first cache, unfortunately now archived.
