Description

Red Bridge 1838

The Red Bridge in Campbell Town crosses the Elizabeth River and was built between 1836 and 1838 using convict labour.  It is thought to be the oldest surviving brick arch bridge in Australia as well as the oldest bridge on the National Highway system.

The bridge consists of three arch spans and carries two lanes of traffic and a pedestrian walkway.  It lies on the Midland Highway roughly halfway between Hobart and Launceston and is estimated to carry over two million vehicles a year.  The Red Bridge was listed on the Register of the National Estate in 1978.

The answers to the following questions can be found on the information board located in the park near the bridge.

1.  Who is believed to have designed the bridge?

2.  How many bricks were used in the construction of the bridge?

3.  Who was the first local to cross the bridge?

4.  How often has major repair work to the bridge been necessary?

hi sharnie's tribe
thanks for this cache - found on a day out with AlbyDangles.
it was freezing here at 8am this morning - there's a nasty wind blowing off some ice and snow somewhere - a brass monkey would be rendered incomplete.
this is a wonderful bridge steeped in history, so thanks for getting me to stop.
one of my convict forebears is in the brick trail outside the opposite building.
cheers, EPs.

Although I have used this bridge on numerous occasions I have never known any thing about its history so thank you Sharnies Tribe for the cache which enabled me to learn about this bridge.

I came upon this cache while looking at cache listings to find somewhere interesting to visit, and was surprised to see that I hadn't logged it when we stopped in Campbell Town last November while doing a lap of Tasmania. We spent some time there taking in all there is to see, and making note of the answers to the questions you asked. Luckily, I still have those notes so I'm logging it now, albeit somewhat belatedly.

Thanks for publishing a cache to mark this important bridge in Australia's history.

With a bit of time to spare on my journey north today, I was fully hoping to complete several caches here. Ultimately, and for a variety of reasons, this would be the only one. Shocked Nevertheless, it was a very interesting stop as I gathered the clues at 09:45 and was on my way.

Many thanks sharnie's tribe.

#GA2831 - 14:15; After an early morning arrival in Devonport, the geohoney and I disembarked from the Spirit of Tasmania II with a bit of time on our hands before we headed to Port Sorell for breakfast with friends. Finally located a bakery in Latrobe after failing to do so in Devonport, but we did find a couple of caches there. After a nice breakfast in our friends' new home, it was time to head off again for Hobart. Following a few more finds we made it to Launceston and then along the Midlands Highway to Campbell Town. Parked the geomobile and while the geohoney got some retail therapy, I did a spot of caching. I took the geomobile for a drive further south to collect this cache and a couple of others in the general area. Gathered the required information and bingo, a code. Hello sharnie's tribe thanks for the cache

EeePees, LilRaffa and my self had left Hobart early this morning to go to Launceston to go to the "Th' lost loot o' Mary Hyde" event. After the very well attended event we had a leisurely drive home looking for caches as we went.

On our way home we stopped off to find all of the caches we hadn't already found in Campbell Town as it ended up none of us had found any of the active caches so we had a big list to tick off.

This was one of many on the long list I left the others as they collected the information for the multi on the other side of the road. I stopped and took a photo and read the sign to check I had the required information before going off to find another cache and then catch bu with the others.

Found at 1455

Many years ago we used to stop here on our regular trips between Hobart & L'ton for a cuppa under the large shady trees. All now long gone other than a few stumps holding up the sculptures. The bridge however has always remained the same. Although designed for the horse & cart it's holding up remarkably well to the constant stream of trucks. "Don't make them like they used to".

Have cached in this park before but never stopped to read the information board about the red bridge.
Thanks for the history lesson. They certainly don't make them to last like that nowadays.

Campbell Town was so busy today, schools hols and all, but there is never anything suspicious about reading this type of sign in an historic town, so the information was easily collected. These history type caches are well suited to our level of mobility and they are so interesting - a firm caching favourite with us, so thank you for this one Sharnie's Tribe.
