Description
Red Bridge 1838
The Red Bridge in Campbell Town crosses the Elizabeth River and was built between 1836 and 1838 using convict labour. It is thought to be the oldest surviving brick arch bridge in Australia as well as the oldest bridge on the National Highway system.
The bridge consists of three arch spans and carries two lanes of traffic and a pedestrian walkway. It lies on the Midland Highway roughly halfway between Hobart and Launceston and is estimated to carry over two million vehicles a year. The Red Bridge was listed on the Register of the National Estate in 1978.
The answers to the following questions can be found on the information board located in the park near the bridge.
1. Who is believed to have designed the bridge?
2. How many bricks were used in the construction of the bridge?
3. Who was the first local to cross the bridge?
4. How often has major repair work to the bridge been necessary?

thanks for this cache - found on a day out with AlbyDangles.
it was freezing here at 8am this morning - there's a nasty wind blowing off some ice and snow somewhere - a brass monkey would be rendered incomplete.
this is a wonderful bridge steeped in history, so thanks for getting me to stop.
one of my convict forebears is in the brick trail outside the opposite building.
cheers, EPs.

Thanks for the history lesson!
EeePees, LilRaffa and my self had left Hobart early this morning to go to Launceston to go to the "Th' lost loot o' Mary Hyde" event. After the very well attended event we had a leisurely drive home looking for caches as we went.
On our way home we stopped off to find all of the caches we hadn't already found in Campbell Town as it ended up none of us had found any of the active caches so we had a big list to tick off.
This was one of many on the long list I left the others as they collected the information for the multi on the other side of the road. I stopped and took a photo and read the sign to check I had the required information before going off to find another cache and then catch bu with the others.
