Description

Find a disused telephone box

Although almost everyone carries a little box of magic in the form of a mobile phone it has not always been so convenient to keep in touch with other people. Back in the dark ages a telephone call required more than pulling the box of magic from your pocket and being instantly connected to a friend, either just next door or on the far side of the world. Back then you either used your own home telephone or you walked to the corner and used a public telephone, usually housed in a telephone box similar to these...

To log this cache you must take a photo of a disused telephone box, ideally with you or your gps in the photo. The box may still be on the roadside or it may be tucked away in a backyard or antique shop. Where ever it is, it's your job to sniff it out and log the find. You may log this cache a maximum of 5 times.

I saw this oldie on a walk after an awesome breakfast in the area. They are becoming rarer over time. I had a laugh when I saw the inside of the box (see image). I remember using these when I was much younger. Thanks for the cache Smile

This old red phone box is sitting in the communal area of our residential village at Kincumber. It was looking unloved for quite a while but the village staff gave it a fresh coat of paint recently and now it looks like it's brand new and usable ... except for the lack of an essential component, a phone.

Whenever I have a weekend afternoon that I'm not working I like to head out of Echuca to the Great Aussie Beer Shed for some "fellowship" over a couple of cold Bundy's. You can interpret that as being most weekends. There's something going on all the time and things change very often at the Beer Shed. There's thousands of beer cans on show and hundreds of other "old things". The latest addition to the Shed is an old phone box.

This Disused Phone Box is within the grounds of Moira Station - a private function centre 30km north of Echuca. I dropped a load of passengers here for a wedding and spotted the phone box as I was turing the bus around.

A few weeks ago we made the journey along a very corrugated and dusty road to Wittenoom in Western Australia to check out what was left of this town. As the town has been de-gazetted due to the asbestos danger we were surprised to find a few people still living there. Apparently they refused to leave when the town was closed down. Not sure why anyone would want to live here and with no mobile reception we thought this phone box might be active but Mr Beetle checked it out and it was dead.
The phone box can be found at S22 14.401 E118 20.745
Thanks.

Stopped in Paihia in the Bay of Islands of New Zealand, where an old telephone box is a pop up free library.
It also houses one of the best caches we have seen.

We stopped by the Ettamogah Pub in Albury NSW for a photo opportunity as it was early in the morning, and no one was around. We found this disused phone box in the gardens. We are travelling to Alexandra event in Victoria, and geocaching along the way. TFTC

On our return from a recent caching trip to Hobart we came across a repurposed telephone box at the front entrance to a property. The domed roof was the identifying characteristic as the glass windows had been removed and replaced by wooden panels. The required photo has been added to the Gallery. Thanks WazzandWenches for the cache.

Found this disused phone box a few years ago when we thought there was a cache for disused phone boxes. We didn't get to log it then because unlike the phone box we couldn't find the cache so we'll log it now. As you can see from the photo this was two caches in one, we thought we'd hit the locationless jackpot!

This red telephone box is sitting beside the former Post Office building, and nearby is its lovely friend a little red postal box. I 'suspect' this telephone box was the one sitting over in Bowral behind the Telephone Exchange and was relocated here - a wise decision IMHO. BTW it no longer houses the telephone.

Red Telephone Box, Former Post Office - Moss Vale, NSW

The heritage value of this Red Telephone Box is recognised & it is protected by a stout, spiked iron fence. The Red Telephone Box is not accessible to the public for its own protection. It is a vivid reminder of our past experience with public phones & an attraction in its own right. The building behind is the former Post Office which is heritage listed & was constructed in 1890. I like the word "ideally" as this is one of my Waymarks therefore neither I nor my Magellan are in view.

This old phone box is now part of the Adavale Mini-Museum in outback Queensland.

If we'd been a bit more with it we could have been FTF on this cache. Two years ago while touring around we decided to make a dent in the list of Locationless. This was our first find but by the time we tried to log it there was no trace of a Locationless about old phone boxes. Confused We still don't know if there ever was such a thing but since there is now . . . Laughing This phone box is in the John Oxley Caravan Park and appears to be in the original position.
TFTC WazzaAndWenches.

A second hand dealer in Westbury Tasmania has had two old telephone boxes in his yard fro a number of years. When we last enquired, one was selling fro $1800, the other for $2400. Obviously there isn't much demand at those prices as they have remained in the dealer's yard for many years. A photo of Mrs y'stassie with to disused telephone boxes has been added to the Gallery. Thanks WazzaAndWenches for the cache.
