Description

A Geocache for Great North Walkers.

It's a Great Walk North

The Great North Walk is a 250km walking track from Macquarie Place in Sydney to Bicentennial Park in Newcastle. After leaving Macquarie Place it continues across the harbour,  through Hunters Hill, up along Lane Cove River and over to Thornleigh. It then follows Berowra Creek.

If you're a Great North Walker, to get here you've just passed some rare, vertical rock carvings, many native middens and some impressive wind-eroded caves high atop the eastern escarpment. That's just in the last few hundred metres. Perhaps you met a lyrebird or some wallabies. And of course, there's the waterway itself. Great South Walkers have all that ahead.

Either way, it's time to take a break and prepare for the 110m ascent you now face or regroup after the trek across the ridges and the descent you've just survived. So take a seat, rest your feet and absorb the surroundings. Then when you're ready, find a cache before heading on.

I had been looking for an excuse to visit this one and after hunting down a nearby archived cache this morning, it was a great opportunity to find just one more. I've walked this track quite a few times in recent years and said my obligatory good morning to several fishermen. Before I knew it, I was at the stairs of pain, sitting and signing the log. Container and logbook in tip top shape.

Great to have a cache to walk to. After the very quick search earlier in the week i had another go today. I had a few errands to run nearby checking on a local hermit and the oracle of cunio point. At the oracle I asked whether or not I'd find it this time and he responded with a resounding YES. From the oracle I headed around the point and then contoured around then down to come out on the track with the new GPS saying 12m. At 0m I was in a very logical spot and made the quick find I should have made the other day. Seems the cache blindness is cured. Returned the container then headed along the shoreline to the "vertical" carvings. The ax grooves near the top and the attitude of bedding give away the original orientation for this one. Scouted about above in the hope there might be more to find, but the slope above forms the embankment to the switchback on the road and the whole slope is covered in rock talus and rock fill. Clambered up to the drystone at road level then continued up the steep slope to the single track at Alston where I started the mornings hike. About a 9km return trip from home including a number of interesting side trips. Thanks Baktrak!

Wandered down with youngest to stretch the legs. We spotted a medium sized lace monitor on the way in. My trusty Oregon has died so came armed with an aging etrex. This struggled to lock onto 3 satellites so accuracy was not good (at the seat was still saying gz was 50m north) so resorted to the phone which was much better but still had us wandering up and down. Counted both ways but nothing was found, did not spend that long looking so likely it's still in play? Will come back down later in the week with my new Gps and investigate the large "vertical" carving a bit more. Wander if it found its way down from a higher point? Love this part of the world. Thanks for the short walk.

Decided to head up to Berowra Waters this afternoon for a spot of caching on a glorious spring day. Once I made my way across the ferry of infinite waits it was a bit of a struggle to find a parking spot with a lot of people around. Then back across to this side for Bruce's ferry mystery cache and a nice walk to this one.

A pleasant stroll from where I managed to park, mainly noticing shell middens and a couple fishing, the lady in a bikini. All quiet at ground zero and a quick find, removing a beer bottle someone had kindly left at the bottom of the steps to take back with me in the spirit of cache in trash out. Thanks Baktrak.

We took geo-doggie for a pleasant walk along the river from Berowra Waters, and I was surprised how many others were similarly out for a Sunday stroll. Popular for fishing as well, and the people living on boats and houses along the river can access from the small wharf. Could see the famous Berowra Waters Inn in the sunshine, many middens along the path, a huge rock carving, and beautiful tall gums hiding the high rock face.
Well chosen BAKTRAK, TFTC, a first-to find for me! Very Happy , Dancing
