Description
Fortifications
Smiths Hill Fort is located in North Wollongong and was also known as Wollongong Fort. Built between 1891-1893 after the withdrawal of English troops and coastal artillery and to provide a deterrent to a possible Russian attack upon Wollongong Harbour.
The fort is a concealed battery on high ground above Wollongong Harbour with underground rooms for supplies, ammunition and shelter with emplacements for two 80-pound cannons on iron carriages, and a 1 1/2 inch quick firing gun (gone now).
It was used extensively for company training and maintained by the Wollongong-Bulli HalfCompany. In 1946, the fort was filled with rubble and dirt. The fort was dug out and restored in 1988 and two cannons were restored and reinstalled at the fort.

A good look, but it has been so long since a find we were not surprised.
Thanks.

Can't say this was a quick find but eventually Mr Beetle came up with the goods.
Interesting to read about this area and how it was uncovered again. It is looking a bit the worse for wear though and could do with a good tidy up. Felt like going and getting the broom and sweeping up all the pine rubbish down here. The garden area was well kept and lovely though.
Thanks, it was good to find a GCA cache in such good condition.

I was just about to give up and compose a DNF about evil nanos with a 1.5 difficulty when I expanded the search area. Perhaps I take things too literally but whilst I agree with the first part of the hint, I'm not so sure about the second (if this is a spoiler let me know and I'll edit).
Anyway I enjoyed the walk, the hunt and the cache. I also probably provided some entertainment to a gaggle of Asian touring muggles who spent much time on the road above photographing each other, with the backdrop of a lunatic scrabbling around a large gun.
Visiting this weekend for my first time since my eldest, Candice, moved here for Uni. Today I got to meet her friend Pat and together the the of us went Geocaching. This was first on my list as it was Aussie and unfound. After trying to describe Geocaching to Pat and what we might be looking for, I found out he'd watched a few of my vlogs. This set him up for his first find. Yep - he found it first. In fact today he found 2 of the three we went looking for this morning. Great times.
