Description

Lighthouses of NSW - Clarence River Lighthouse

First there was first a rudimentary structure of a platform with a kerosene lamp on it on the most easterly part of Pilot Hill. This was replaced in 1866 by a small wooden humpy whose shutters were opened each night to dispense the rays of a large kerosene lamp placed on a bench.

A permanent light was built in 1880 by W. Kinnear at a cost of £1,097. The 7 metre high lighthouse's style of the this was typical of lights of this era in New South Wales with similar one being established at Richmond River, Fingal Head, Crowdy Head and Tacking Point.

With the building of the Pacific Hotel it was felt that the light was obscured. Also the site was being mooted for the construction of the new town reservoir. A new lighthouse was built in 1955 on Pilot Hill and the old lighthouse was demolished in 1956 to make way for the reservoir.

Height: 18 metres
Elevation: 41 metres
Pattern: Flashing White (3) in 15 sec
Range: 17 nautical miles / 31.5 km

Fun fact: The local Yamba Community Radio Station 2TLC is housed in a replica of the 1880 lighthouse which was built by volunteers on the exact site of the original building.

With a spot of lunch in town, I was able to talk the boys into stopping here before heading on our way south. A nice quick one at 15:40. Very Happy

Thanks Team MavEtJu.

We had to cut our swimming session a bit short as a thunder storm was rolling over so we came up here to get the nearby trig and check out the lighthouse.

We managed to snag a park in the small parking area nearby and had a look at the interesting lighthouse. The kids decided it was a bit small compared to some of the ones we have seen around.
The replica lighthouse nearby is also pretty cool.

I am in Yamba this weekend for an end of year work function staying at Angourie Resort which is lovely. We have the day free so I am going caching. The Lighthouses of NSW - Clarence River Lighthouse is my fourth cache today. Happy to find this impressive lighthouse. Thanks for the virtual MavEtJu

I love lighthouses. Whenever I’m standing next to one I wonder about the stories it holds. In another era I would have been a lighthouse keeper. Thanks for the cache Smile

We decided against riding the bikes up here this morning, so came back in the car after lunch! Great spot up here, 2 trigs and a virtual.... You could almost add another virtual for the replica radio station lighthouse....

We like visiting lighthouses for all their shapes, sizes and styles. This one is quite tall compared to some.
What a beaut spot it has too - lovely views. Very Happy

A very tall lighthouse compared to our recent lighthouse finds.
Arrived here early in the morning but I had left the data going on the mobile phone all night so the phone was down to 1%.
Went and did a couple of other caches and came back and finally had the charge up to 7% so jumped out and took a distance shot.
Walked straight past the lighthouse after taking the photo to get the GC cache up here.
Thanks, a nice area and many muggles enjoying the lookout and playing a social game of soccer on the grass.
Thanks.

Some great views near this lighthouse

#GA2740 - 14:15; Day five of the 2018 Oz GeoMuster mission with Sol de lune. After a night in Ballina, the plan for today was to cache northward through Ballina to Byron Bay and then on to Kingscliff before turning south for home through Bangalow, Evans Head, New Italy, Yamba, Maclean and on to Kempsey for another overnight stay. After an early start, we hadn't gone far up the road when we saw evidence of a heavy shower not too long before we got there, so we seem to have dodged a bullet and got packed up with fairly dry gear. Following a successful run through to Cape Byron, we continued our journey along some interesting and at times rather rough roads before getting to the highway and on to Brunswick Heads then Kingscliff. Another hiccup after we started the trek south again when we missed the turn off into Bangalow due to older maps and newer roads. Didn't have any problems finding our way in to Yamba though, despite all the roadworks on the highway. Headed to the nearby trig and then grabbed some snaps of this lighthouse. A quick find at the top of the hill.

Next visit, a beer at the Pacific Hotel will be in order, but today it's a quick look here, off to the nearby trig, and bolt for the Iluka ferry.

When we arrived at Clarence Head we became a little confused. We were expecting one lighthouse but there were two. In addition the Clarence River Lighthouse was not at the published coordinates but about 100m away.

At the published coordinates was the active and very prominent lighthouse, a quite tall structure. However on the door its name is recorded at the Clarence Head Lighthouse. The first two photos added to the Gallery are: Mrs y;stassie standing in front of the Clarence Head Lighthouse; and the information on the door of the lighthouse.

A replica of the Clarence River Lighthouse is located at S29 26.020 E153 21.748. It has been built on the base of a former reservoir (the new reservoir is adjacent). The third photo added to the Gallery is of the replica Clarence River Lighthouse and the sign identifying the lighthouse.

Thanks Team MavEtJu for the cache and the series.

Photographed while on a coastal trip a little while back.

I was here just 2 days before you published this. There were black cockatoos munching away at the trees so we wasted our time watch them rather than venturing down to the engineering landmark.
