Description

Lighthouses of NSW - Tacking Point Lighthouse

In the early to mid 19th Century the main contact for the coastal towns of the north coast of New South Wales was sea transport. There were no roads and the railways were only just beginning. There were few lights and in the Tacking Point area more than 20 wrecks occurred, the first being the schooner Black Joe in 1823, and the steamer Sumatra in the same year. The structure is built of cement-rendered bricks and because of the elevation only needed to be 8 metres high.

Height: 8 metres
Elevation: 34 metres
Pattern: Group Flashing 4 every 20 seconds
Range: 16 nautical miles / 29.6 km

Stopped at the lighthouse on the way home from Christmas. What a great spot for Brekkie, especially before the sun gets too high in the sky. Plenty of surfers about, but the waves on the beach to the north looked pretty gnarled.

While staying nearby we headed down to the lighthouse to watch the sunset. Top spot! TFTVC

After a few hrs of driving last night after work we ended up just south of Newcastle for a quick overnight camp. Up early for our big drive north to Queensland today. Found a few caches and labs on the way, but mostly driving.
The Rats and Mizmaz are joining on this one.

Wet and windy day on the headland! Got an almost break in the weather and wifey snapped a photo. Top spot!

Visiting family for the weekend, and went shopping in town this morning, I decided to stop and enjoy the view here on the way through. I couldn't help but notice there were unfound (by me) GCA trig point, virtual, and history caches all here as well as a GC EC. Okay, so these were the only reason I came here. Hahaha.

Lovely spot. Bit windy, hazy, and chopped up water. Still enjoyed the views though. Love the blue paint highlights on the lighthouse too.

Photo snapped with sister.

Stopped here on our way into Port Macquarie to get an earthcache on International Earthcache Day and then returned for another look later on to get this picture.

We always check out lighthouses, especially when they are bristling caches! TFTC

Went to the Smoky Cape lighthouse yesterday which was an identical design to this one. But unlike that one you don't have a short but steep walk to this one. In fact we lucked a parking spot at the top.
This one did have a hand painted door though which made it easier to identify when sending the photo across.
Thanks, another well maintained lighthouse in a popular spot.

#GA3860 - 07:40; On the way home from the Gold Coast with the geohoney and we stopped for the night at Port Macquarie. Decided to collect a few of the local caches on an earlyish morning run. This was the second stop and in addition to the trig, picked up a history cache and this virtual as well. The real benefit of the visit though was taking in the great views from Tacking Point in both directions and reading up on some of the local history. TFTC Team MavEtJu Very HappyClan Cerberus

Day 79 Mainland trig (now heading to OZGM)
Out and about with Tassie Trekkers caching around Port Macquarie and surrounds and we stopped to photograph this trig. What a fantastic lighthouse tr As the road directly to it is now closed for repair until September, we walked along the beach and up the stairs. There were people watching for whales, others surfing, swimming and fishing. A busy spot. Another in the series ticked off. TFTV

what a beautiful place to visit. Very windy. TFTC

We have lived it Port for over 14 years and it astounded us that we have never taken a picture of our "own" lighthouse, today that changed.

We have plenty of pics of Tacking Point Lighthouse taken on numerous visits over many years and today we came for another. Admittedly the bike ride to it was a big attraction but this scenically breezy spot on a hot day is always well worth a visit. Really enjoy this lighthouse series, TFTC MavEtJu.

I was up in Port Macquarie for a family reunion, so a chance to grab some caches too. This one was on the list.

Even though I knew we wouldn't be able to see much in this weather we visited the lighthouse anyway. Surprised to see such a small structure. Got photos, got wet, promptly ran back to the car.

This lighthouse is a little cutie and well maintained overlooking another gorgeous coastline. The day we were her we were privileged to see a pod of Dolphins swimming northward - a lovely sight. Thank you for the lighthouse caches.
