Description

Lighthouses of NSW - Hornby Lighthouse

The Hornby Lighthouse at South Head was built by public demand after the tragic shipwrecks of the Dunbar and the Catherine Adamson.

The entrance to Jackson's Bay, four-fifths of a nautical mile wide, seemly a good broad entrance, however as the two ships mentioned had found, it was fraught with danger. After these disasters a small lighthouse was erected at a low elevation on the extreme point of Inner South Head in 1858 amidst gun pits dug out by hard labour.

Height: 9 metres
Elevation: 27 metres
Pattern: White light showing two seconds on, three seconds off
Range: 22 km

Photo: Annette Flotwell

Fun fact: There are probably only a few remaining relics of the brig Two Friends, wrecked in 1851, sitting immediately below the lighthouse.

For more information, see Hornby Lighthouse at lighthouses.org.au.

#GA5498 - 11:55; In Sydney for a few days with the geohoney and decided today to head to Watson's Bay for lunch at the pub. Arrived early, so headed out to the lighthouse for a wander and a spot of caching as well. Not as far as I'd always though the walk would be and would have been really pleasant except for the wind which would have blown us over the cliff if we got too close! Found this virtual while out on a caching run through the Eastern Suburbs trying to progress my journey and get a few steps closer to the destination. Total haul for the day was 15 caches including 9 trigs, some GCA virtuals and a few GC caches.

This was my main target for the day - Hornby Lighthouse. A four in one find with a trig, GCA virtual, GC virtual and the starting point of a GC multi! The journey to the lighthouse was amazing with great views, lots of history to explore and pretty blue fairy wrens darting here and there across the path. The lighthouse itself has one of the best views in the city. Sign me up as a lighthouse keeper please!!!! Snapped the required photos before spending some more time exploring here.

Thanks for the cache Geocaching Australia Very Happy

While this find does not qualify for the Summer Games it is a great journey to an amazing destination.

Great location with a lovely old Hornby Lighthouse and some old gun emplacements to have a look at as well. Was lucky enough to have a large ship go past while I was there this morning.
