Description

Lighthouses of NSW - Wollongong Head Lighthouse

Completed in 1936, by the Department of Shipping and Transport, it was the first new lighthouse in New South Wales since 1903. The tower is constructed of reinforced concrete and replaced several earlier lights.

The original light apparatus was found to be faulty so a temporary acetylene gas light was employed until the replacement arrived in October 1938.

The light is bi-coloured. A white light of 4.5 second duration visible through 100 degrees, and a red Light visible through 80 degrees. This latter indicating reefs and headlands.

Height: 25 metres
Elevation: 40 metres
Pattern: One occulting every six seconds
Range: 19 nautical miles / 30 km

#GA4940 - 10:30; In the Illawarra with the geohoney for a short visit just to break the monotony that is being wrought by COVID-19. Grabbed another snap of the lighthouses in the area to add to the tally, while on the hunt for breakfast and a pleasant stroll around the harbour and along the blue mile. Drove up from Kiama today on a very rainy day to visit the area. Came out to Wollongong Head and visited not one but two lighthouses in quick succession - gotta be happy with that! Great to be here and to enjoy the sights "out the front" of this wonderful city. Found with Ms MajuraHathi.
Thanks Team MavEtJu and cheers.

Oz Geomuster 2019 Wollongong at Cataract Scout Park. The third day was spent with Fitzy and MinnieK around Wollongong to attend some 4events and do the Wollongong LAB caches and Coffee adventure to get the pathtag. We also did a few highlight caches along the way.

There were several trigs and markers awaiting a visit while we were done here by the harbour.

Thanks.

07-Jul-19
I was here for the flash mob (earlier today), and the group I was going to go off with (to find another cache had an hour up the road) either found it the day before, or left earlier than I did, so I decided to enjoy myself exploring the rocks by the sea and find some caches here, and go do the other one by myself later Smile
TFTC - I had fun practising some lightsabre techniques, then had a nice chat with the people flying big kites.

How's this for a vantage point of this lighthouse! Decided to get a bit of a different view and perspective of this lighthouse than some of the other pictures in the gallery!
Taken from GC84AY5 nearby! Credit to DSD for snapping the photo for me.
Of course I also visited the lighthouse up close and personal too, an impressive lighthouse it is!
Thanks

A two for one find while out visiting Flagstaff Hill today with the family. After a play on the beach and exploring the rock platform, we climbed back up the hill to check out the lighthouses and lookouts, snapping the required photos. This is a great place to visit on a sunny winter’s day! Highly recommended for a great family day out.

Thanks for the virtual TeamMavEtJu, another very interesting series!

I stopped by here at 16:25 while on my pre-welcome function walk around the area this afternoon. The weather was glorious so there were people everywhere but who'd notice another person taking a pickie of the lighthouse. Wink

Thanks Team MavEtJu.

Today I made the area of northern Wollongong unsafe with my geocaching activities. 23 finds, six GCA ones, two puzzles. A good time was had by all! Errr me.

One historic engineers marker, two lighthouses and three trigpoints so close to each other!

Another 2 for 1 GCA caching spot, and what great spots they were to visit. Really enjoyed our ride in the area and after grabbing the photo for this one which was the last we decided to head off for a longer ride around the foreshore.
Thanks.

What a great vantage point for photo off the lighthouse - The Wall. Now that was fun. Smile

Fortuitously we took the required photo for another purpose when we visited the Wollongong Head Lighthouse during a recent visit. This lighthouse certainly dominates the landscape. The required photo has been added to the Gallery and we will claim FTF. Thanks Team MavEtJu for the cache and the series. The lighthouse series give us another focus as we tour around the country.
