Description

Lighthouses of VIC - Split Point Lighthouse

The 'White Queen' as she is affectionately known is a welcome sight for ships that have rounded Cape Otway. Overlooking Eagle Rock the lighthouse is not only a beacon to seafarers but also to travellers on the Great Ocean Road.

The nights tending lights were long and Gordon Reid tells of one keeper's solution to the problem in his book, From Dusk Till Dawn.

"The keeper at Split Point at Airey's Inlet in Victoria did not exactly sleep on the job but he did not see why he should be deprived of his social life at night. He scratched a small hole in the black paint on the back of the lantern, which prevents the light shining inland and annoying residents. This keeper, Richard Joy Baker, scratched the hole to line up with the Airey's Inlet Hotel. Each time the lenses rotated, the light winked through the hole, assuring the keeper (who had retired to the hotel) that all was well."

Height: 34 metres
Elevation: 66 metres
Pattern: Group flash 4 every 20 seconds
Range: White 20 nautical miles / 37 km, Red 16 nautical miles / 39 km

Down in Anglesea with some friends this week, and we were keen to visit the lighthouse which I haven't been to since the Surf Coast mega!
Thunderstorms were threatening to approach us, although we got pretty lucky and escaped most of it, only receiving a strong breeze by the water!
One browse of the GCA map later and - oh yeah, those lighthouse virtuals, that's right.
And so here I am!

Thanks to Team MavEtJu for setting this one up! Very Happy

We made a quick walk up to the majestic lighthouse for a quick selfie today as we passed.
We have visited here many times to take in the stunning views of Aireys Inlet and take photos of the white Queen.
My children were especially fascinated with the lighthouse after watching "Around the Twist"
Thanks for bringing us back here to take in the grand old lady once more.

Out for the day with teamashy doing caching and birdwatching. We have been here many times before so thought this virtual was appropriate. Then did a nearby GC multi. Also saw an elusive Rufous Bristlebird... Our second sighting today in 2 different places. Great day. TFTC

In what will likely become an annual tradition next year at this rate, for the second Victorian Mega in a row, landau351 and I teamed up to attempt this year's batch of Lab caches. It worked out pretty well, as between us, we had in our possession all the toys, er, tools required to get the information we needed at each one.
Oh, and we picked up a passel of extra smileys in our travels. This was one.

Out and about caching for the nearby mega event and I visited this lighthouse. Some photos were taken and the views were admired. There is an unusually large number of tourists here today...

12/11/2016 - 12.54 pm - 1st Geo-Au cache for the day while out doing other 'things' at The Surf Coast Geocaching Event with Wal-len, Surefoot24 & Trisam (signing as Bass Coasters for the weekend) We were a bit rushed & managed photos of lighthouse from a few different location but didn't really get a lot of time to enjoy the location on Saturday, we were back on Sunday too though & that was a bit more leisurely. Hmmm . . . I'm not in any of the photos that I have as I was taking them Sad Maybe one of the others has one of me in but I don't have any at the moment. I guess someone has to take the photos Wink. Do they look like a trustworthy bunch? Haha. Each person has some sort of finding device with them, somewhere. Thanks for the cache! DancingDancingRazz

I came here during the Surf Coast Event Tournament but the photographer from my team has lost the photo-evidence (5 Jul 2017).

UPDATE 27 Oct 2017: My partner-in-crime eventually sent me the photo evidence of my visit to this Lighthouse.

Like so many others, we were caching in and around the Airey's Inlet and Anglesea area during the Surf Coast (Mega) Event and made a point of heading out to the lighthouse so we could log this cache.

Thanks MavEtJu for the series.

I was with team "Capital Crunchers" (KittyKtach, GrimRaider, SmittenGranny, Mister JD, ACTchil and myself) at the Surf Coast Event 2016 and we just had to do this virtual cache which was part of the game. Such a beautiful spot and the weather was great today. We drove up to the lighthouse and had a look around and just loved the views. tftc Team MavETJU. KittyKatch has the photo of us all at the lighthouse on her iphone.

We visited the Split Rock Lighthouse as part of the activities associated with The Surf Coast Mega. Naturally we took the opportunity to meet the requirements for this cache. A photo of Mrs y'stassie at the base of this very impressive lighthouse has been added to the Gallery. Thanks Team MavEtJu for another cache in this excellent series.

Travelled to Victoria this year and stopped at Split Point Lighthouse, almost missed this one not actually knowing it was here but stumbling upon it. It's now become a mission to see as many as possible. Another lovely lighthouse. Thanks for the lighthouse series.
