Description

Lighthouses of VIC - Cape Schanck Lighthouse

Cape Schanck is on the southern tip of the Mornington Peninsula. It is part of a triangle of Bass Strait lights, the other two being Cape Otway and Cape Wickham Lighthouses, of radio controlled lights and signals.

It is considered by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority to be the most original lighthouse under its jurisdiction.

An unusual feature of this lighthouse is its stone stairway rather than the usual wrought iron.

The lighthouse was renovated from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. Work included the refurbishment of the lantern.

Height: 21 metres
Elevation: 100 metres
Pattern: Fixed White Sector with Flashing Red Sector
Range: 26 nautical miles / 48 km

Photo: Ed Kavaliunas

Fun fact: There is an excellent Museum in the old Assistant Lightkeepers Quarters.

For more information, see lighthouses.org.au.

When logging this cache, please add a photo of yourself or your GPS with this lighthouse.

Visited this afternoon while staying nearby in an effort to get the kids out for some fresh air. There was some weather closing in and out was pretty windy in front of it. Still some fantastic views around here.
Thanks Team MavEtJu for the cache.

A quick find (how can it be anything but a quick find when the geocache you seek is a hundred metres tall). A very windy and cold day down here today, but very bracing and quite nice out for a walk.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks for this geocache here today. Another lighthouse to mark off.

Ah what a day, today was the day that I found my 1000th geocaching.com cache.... happy days, finally after 2 1/2 years of this madness I have finally reached that milestone. It was just before I was making my final finds before hand that I remembered to myself hey there is a GCA virtual cache just around the corner....... so obviously I just had to come and do it. I knew that it wasnt going to be that much trouble and managed to do it just after going and doing the Australia day lighthouse gc.com cache, as I was walking back up I noticed that I was able to get a fair view of the Lighthouse and was able to get a couple good photos of myself in front of the lighthouse itself. I am really happy to finally get one of these caches off my list and cannot wait to do some more. Thanks for the great virtual

Today we visited Cape Schanck and enjoyed the walk to this lighthouse and the museum nearby. The views from the lighthouse were superb. The required photos were taken.
Thanks for another cache in the Lighthouses of Australia series MavEtJu. We look forward to visiting more in the future.

The weather was no good for sailing today so my husband offered to go geocaching with me. I knew exactly where I wanted to go. Cape Schanck Lighthouse for this virtual geocache. I was surprised to discover that you can now walk to the base of the lighthouse without having to book a tour.
Photos were taken just before the afternoon weather deteriorated.
