Description

Going for Gold

Going for Gold is a sculpture in South Yarra.

There is no plaque or other information around the sculpture but it is surrounded by the Australia and Greek flags and is directly opposite the Greek Orthodox Church. Given the Olympics were founded in ancient Greece it is likley that this sculpture dates back to the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games and was placed here to be in proximity to the Melbourne Greek community. I can find nothing else about it. Even Stonnington council know nothing of this sculpture (or if they do I can't find the right person to ask). If you know more or can find anything else out about this sculpture, please log a note about it.

Geocaching is similar to going for gold (especially as a Griffin Gold Clan Member), so I found it only appropriate that this gold sculpture had a gold geocache located nearby and that control of this geocache remained in Griffin Gold hands.

So come and try to find the geocache and if you're Griffin, give it some Griffin Lovin'. If you're from one of those stinkier clans, then I suppose you're welcome to try and find it as well.

#GA2549 - 18:00; After driving down to Melbourne to bring the geostudent and her friend back for uni, Sol de lune flew in to join me for a days caching and the return journey to Canberra. Our plan was to make finds in as many of the dragonZones in which we were yet to make a find as we could. Today the plan was to head south to Kingston, then on to Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula before heading back north to Monash and a few other zones before wrapping up the day in Stonnington. After completing our southern run, we were now back in the city and on the last leg of the mission for today. Managed to find a park and set about collecting the caches in this local area. I have to hand it to the hider on this one. Luckily the geomobile was parked nearby and I was able to grab a ToTT to help with the extraction. TFTC caughtatwork Very HappyClan Cerberus

Last one for the day and last one in Melbourne for this trip. Heading home via Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and Shepparton tomorrow.

Arrived at GZ and noted that a bush was gone, however we still managed to search for the cache and soon had it hand. We signed the log, replaced the cache...and then joined the line of traffic heading back towards the city and to our motel.

A successful run around this area gave us the 4 we were looking...so all good.

Thanks for the cache/s caughtatwork.

I went for gold. And I found it.
Was nearby for a work meeting so thought I’d check out. And I struck gold.

Great spot for a cache and managed to add my name to the second spot.

Luckily it wasn't hidden in the bush then.

As the marathon draws to a close, there is no one in sight. The lead runner crosses the line and is handed the gold medal. Unlike the first games, today's entrants were not naked but the jubilation was none the less. Not too sure what carrat gold this is, it now seems a little tarnished. Perhaps GREEN best describes it's current state.
