Description

The boundary that divides

At GZ is a set of interpretative boards that make interesting reading.

42° S the boundary that divides

42° S the boundary that never was

42° S the boundary that lingers

42° S the boundary that moves

A little known fact is Van Diemen's Land was divided by the 42nd parallel into two counties in 1804. The 42nd parallel is about 3.46 km north of this site.

Please answer the following questions from the interpretative boards and select the correct answers by choosing questions and answers under Actions on the RH side of the cache page. When you select the answers correctly you will receive a code to log to claim a smiley.

1. When Van Diemen's Land was divided at the 42nd parallel what name was given to the county North of the parallel? (taken from The Colonial Divide board)

(a) Cornwall

(b) Paterson

(c) Tamar

(d) Dalrymple

2. When Van Diemen's Land was divided at the 42nd parallel what name was given to the county South of the parallel? (taken from The Colonial Divide board)

(a) Bass

(b) Buckinghamshire

(c) Risdon

(d) Derwent

(3) The 42° South line of latitude passes through Tasmania, the South Island of New Zealand, Chile and which other country? (taken from 42° S - A Line of Latitude board)

(a) Argentina

(b) South Africa

(c) Brazil

(d) Mexico

#GA2835 - 15:05; After an early morning arrival in Devonport, the geohoney and I disembarked from the Spirit of Tasmania II with a bit of time on our hands before we headed to Port Sorell for breakfast with friends. Finally located a bakery in Latrobe after failing to do so in Devonport, but we did find a couple of caches there. After a nice breakfast in our friends' new home, it was time to head off again for Hobart. Following a few more finds we made it to Launceston and then along the Midlands Highway to Campbell Town and now on to Ross. I do believe I've stopped here for a cache on an earlier visit and if memory serves me correctly, the weather was much the same, wet! TFTC whitewebbs Very HappyClan Cerberus

Hello whitewebbs thank you for the cache.

This was one of the caches that I did found in Ross.
The day had been very interesting and varied with what I was going to do changing all the time.
I do like the fact that Tasmania had a "bounder".
It wasn't too long ago that a team of surveyors walked the 42nd parallel across Tasmania and marked it out as they went. If you know where to look you can see the markers.

Found at 15:22

Can remember being here before on caching business. Think it was a multi back then.
Thanks, the kind of place it doesn't hurt to return to every few years to refresh the memory.

The old trad is long gone but lives on in this virtual - which is so much more appropriate we think. Not only lots of history to absorb but geohistory! We have lots of "latitude" to read all about latitude (& even more so longitude). Great stuff whitewebbs.

We have stopped here many times and I have read the boards so often while waiting for others to use the conveniences that I knew these answers. Also found the old traditional cache and cool trig here. Thanks whitewebbs for another history cache. Guess I can claim another FTF on your caches. Cool
