Description

What have you discovered on the mountain today?

The mountain Mt Wellington/Kunanyi has had many names. Aboriginal people have been on this land since time began. When European settlers arrived they were drawn to the mountain as well.

Today, thousands of Hobartians look to the mountain every day to try and get a hint of the weather for the day, with many walking the mountain's numerous trails.

At GZ there are information boards in front of an expansive view. On a clear day you can see the Mountain ranges of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

Please answer the following questions from the information boards and select the correct answers by choosing questions and answers under Actions on the RH side of the cache page. When you select the answers correctly you will receive a code to log to claim a smiley.

1. Early European settlers were drawn to the mountain. Who said in 1836 "The day was splendidly clear, and we enjoyed a most extensive view; to the north, the country appeared a mass of wooded mountains ..." ?

(a) George Bass

(b) Lady Jane Franklin

(c) Charles Darwin

2. Under the photo "You stand at a gateway ..."  comes the question - The landscape is rich with how many ??? millennia of Aboriginal heritage?

(a) 20

(b) 30

(c) 40

3. The aboriginal word 'nuyina' means?

(a) Spirit

(b) Spring

(c) Winter

4. The aboriginal word 'mungalina' means?

Found this virtual after spending a lot of time getting into and out of Devil of a good time.
By this time, I've banged my knee twice and starting to get the occasional cramps in my toes and feet.
A long walk in from the pinnacle, via my cache South Wellington and the aforementioned Devil cache, followed by a trip out to Smith's Monument.
Took 6 hours, 14000+ steps and my watch seems to think 8.05 km - I'm sure it was closer to 14km!
Thanks for the cache!

Was in Hobart visiting my Aunty and decided I wanted to head up to Mt Wellington for a look. Enjoyed the drive, however once I reached the pinnacle, the winds and clouds rolled in. It was SUPER windy, frosty and all in all, super cold. Took a happy snap as close to the trig as I could get because of the wet, snow covered rocks. thanks for the listing Laughing

g'day WWs, thanks for the history cache. Headed up early afternoon with the boys, but the weather was closing in. Arrived at the carpark in a fairly light but constant dwizzle, although winds were light and temperature was not too cold. Upshot was we had the boardwalk to ourselves despite a reasonably populated carpark. This is an impressive information area. THANKS.

Found on our holiday to Hobart. Once we arrived at the boardwalk, it took a couple of minutes of reading and dodging in-the-way muggles to get all the answers for the history cache - some more, yet unique beautiful views of the mountain from here. Loved how the signs teach tourists local Indigenous word meanings. TFTC whitewebbs! Clan Cerberus

It was a day for doing touristy things as my son as his girlfriend from the mainland visiting at the moment. A drive to the top of the mountain this morning was suggested and we headed off before it got too crowded. Thanks for this history cache Whitewebbs, another great spot for viewing kunanyi / the moutain.

whitewebbs thanks for the cache.

I had nothing to do and wanted to find some caches and as there was some on top of the mountain I hadn't yet found and the weather looked good I went for a drive.

The trip up was a bit slow with everyone going up, once at the top it was hard to find a parking spot as every one and there dog was up on the mountain.

At GZ I had to be careful as a every one wanted to read the signs so I ducked in and out as the opportunity arose.

Found at 15:20

Visiting the top of Mt Wellington today we were presented with the chance to find and hide some geocaches up there today. A trigpoint, a history cache, two traditionalist and two hides. Quite a busy afternoon up in the clouds today.
Thanks for this informational historical cache today. Learning of the past both recent and not so recent is always interesting. Thanks for this geocache here today.

We needed a cache with elevation over 1000m. Until now that didn't look possible given our family commitments between Christmas and Jan 10 until this cache was published. A place we have visited frequently over 50+ years and have watch the development of various com's towers and visitor information. Good to see Aboriginal history recognised now. Always love the views no matter what the weather. Thanks for another very good history cache Whitewebbs
