Description

A quaint church on the banks of the Tamar River

This cache is located in the grounds of the St Matthias Anglican Church at Windermere on the Tamar River. We have always called the church, the Windermere Church, hence the cache title. It is a popular spot for weddings and baptisms and family gatherings. St Matthias Anglican Church is heritage listed.

This church is one of Australia's longest continually run rural churches. The building of the church commenced in 1842 and it opened in 1843.

While there have a wander around the graveyard. Dr Matthias Gaunt who built the church is buried here, along with early East Tamar pioneers.

It was beautiful here this sunny evening at this historical church. A couple were fishing on the pontoon where in the past I have caught many fish. Very Happy Accurate co-ordinates led to a quick find.

I'm pretty sure we have cached here before. We love this old church and enjoyed a stroll around the graveyard checking out the tombstone inscriptions before leaving.
Thanks a quick find.

Well that was great fun! Took a bit its hole had kind of engulfed the cache over the long period of not being found but sheer determination got it in my hands. These deceased have a beautiful view Smile

The old church looks beautiful lit up of a night.
Little bit soooky wandering through the graves in the dark, especially with the wind howling in the trees.
Thankfully it didn’t take long to find the cache

Such a lovely peaceful spot, with a gorgeous nativity scene at the front gate. Wandered around for a bit and was amazed by the age of some of the graves from the 1800s. Thanks Whitewebbs for providing such an enjoyable cache.

Found on a quiet day but the weather is perfect. Great resting place for all these early pioneers.

After a successful caching trip to the Mt Victoria Forest Reserve we stopped to look for this cache. We have visited this great little church several times in the past and it is always interesting to stroll around the grounds. The view across the water is delightful and you can understand why it is a favourite spot for weddings. GPS pointed us towards a certain object and, sure enough, close inspection revealed a well secreted cache container. A wiggle and a jiggle and we had it extracted. After signing the log we wiggled and jiggled until we had the container back in position. Cache and contents were in excellent condition.
Thanks Whitewebbs for an excellent cache.
