Description

A series of virtual caches that follow the Hume & Hovell expedition to Port Philip

Monument Dedicated: November 10, 1974

Passed by here: November 10, 1874

This monument commemorates the 150th anniversary of the traversing of the Holbrook Shire by Hume and Hovell. Originally set beside the highway 4 kilometres south of Holbrook, it was relocated to Woomargama following roadworks in 1985.

Hamilton Hume was born in Parramatta, New South Wales on 18 June 1797. He had a good knowledge of bushcraft, and by the age of 17 was exploring, first to the Berrima district (between Sydney and Canberra), then with Surveyor Meehan to the Goulburn Plains and Lake Bathurst. Over the next few years he was a member of several exploring parties, to Yass Plains and the tablelands near Braidwood. He was the first Australian born explorer. In 1824, Governor Brisbane asked Hume to join forces with an English sea captain, William Hovell, to go from Lake George to the Spencer Gulf (in what is now South Australia). Hovell was older than Hume, with little bush experience, but he was a good navigator.

What a great way to start my two weeks of ‘Annual leave’. I decided on a Geocaching trip down to Holbrook to find all the lone unfound caches, along the way. I left early in the morning, and found majority of caches on the to-find-list. I ended up in Holbrook by 11am, which I decided on having an early lunch. After lunch, I headed down south for a couple of other caches before starting to head in the home direction. All up, I end the day with 26 finds which was made up with 24 GC and 2 GCA caches. It was a great trip and day out. There were many types of hides, containers, and sizes, which lead to varying difficulties to find. Most were quick finds and all were in good condition. TB visit. A big thanks to the CO for adding this cache to game for the Geocaching community to enjoy. Big Grin TFTC’s! Big Grin

There was 40-80ml of rain predicted so the tarred free camp in Woomargama was our choice for the night. Ducked out for a pizza at the pub and the two caches nearby when there was a break in the rain. The water had got away a bit by the time the photo was taken. TFTC Throsbyonchurch.

Detoured as we headed north today on the Hume Highway to grab this cache and the nearby GC one.
Parked near the tennis court where we were amused by the sign asking players to water and roll the court before playing. Looks like they should mow it first as it is in a bit of a neglected state.
After grabbing the GC cache we spotted the big rock and headed over to take the required photo. Then we spent some time reading the interesting information boards.
Certainly worth the detour to check out this little area.
Thanks.

#GA1765 - 11:40; I was heading south for Wodonga where I would be catching up with Strange Trousers, Geosnag1 and CBRCHIC to tackle the High Country Rail Trail. I decided to take the detour in to Woomargama to log this cache and the nearby GC cache. I don't think I've driven through here since the bypass opened a few years back. Probably why the servo closed! TFTC Throsbyonchurch Very HappyClan Cerberus
