Description

You will need a device which can detect and read a Garmin Chirp.

When our children were young, one of them wanted to keep birds. We refurbished our avery, installed nesting boxes and got four young Peach Faces. They settled in very well and after about about six months, eggs started appearing in the nesting boxes. Not long after we heard the sounds of newly hatched birds. Some didn't survive but the others thrived and the flock built up to about ten birds. Then over a period of about a week we found three dead, each with one leg missing. Initially we suspected rodents but quickly discovered that one Peach Face that my daughter had named Chirpy, was attcking the others and biting off one leg on each bird. We quickly removed Chirpy and put him in a cage we had used for a larger bird. During the day we would put the cage outside next to the avery so that Chirpy could have company and at night, we would bring the cacge inside. When outside, Chirpy would be quite aggressive, poking his head out of the widely spaced bars to threaten larger birds (such as starlings, plovers etc) which came into the back yard. About this time our British Blue kitten, Kiri, joined the family.

Kiri took particular interest in Chirpy but soon discovered that the bird was dominant. One evening Kiri got too close and Chirpy latched onto one of Kiri's ears and nipped off a large piece. Needless to say, the timid Kiri never went near Chirpy again. About two to three years later Chirpy was oustide in his usual position when we heard Chirpy squark and a shadow appeared on the grass. We looked out to see Chirpy being very aggressive with his head and nearly shoulders out of the cage giving the shawdow creator a "tongue lashing". Then the shadow maker swooped and very quickly, the hawk decapitated Chirpy. Dear old Chirpy was buried in the garden with the full honours befitting of a warrior. This cache is in memory of a bird with attitude!

The Garmin Chirp is at the published coordinates. When your compatible device becomes connected, the coordinates of GZ and some other information will be downloaded into your device. You will need a car (or plenty of time to walk) to get to GZ.

We grabbed the required info last night, and made our way here this morning, between Isandula/Gawler and Forth/Paloona.
This was a long and very frustrating search, but it was found probably just seconds before we were going to call it.
Found with AlbyDangles on day Five of the 'Bust' leg of our "Kempsey or Bust" tour.
Cheers, EPs.

"Hello 2y'stassies thank you for the cache.

I'm glad EeePees was here to find this one as I was having trouble finding it.

Today was the fifth day of a road trip with EeePees and a nice sunny day it was.

Using some spare time yesterday, I decided to give this cache a go. After a few trips to the posted coordinates, and figuring out how 'chirp' works, I finally received the coordinates. As dusk was approaching, and so was dinner, I called it a day and headed home. The following day, I headed out to the coords, along the lovely footpath, visiting some GC caches along the way.

After a brief walk along the beach, I soon found the cache - another large one! I was very excited to see another large cache on the Central Coast. The pen wasn't working (the ink must be frozen haha), so luckily I had my own pink pen that I could use.

Thanks 2y'stassies for providing a really cool cache, and an interesting story about a naughty bird too.

Finally had a chance to come back and attempt this one again. This time with more daylight on our side. Bumbled over the surrounding logs to reach some possible hiding spots. We were coming up empty handed. So just before last light, I succumbed to phoning a friend and getting an idea of where it was hiding. Eventually this was found a short way from where the GPS was telling me it should be. Log signed and re-hidden. TFTC Clan Cerberus

This afternoon after we finished work we decided to make a last minute dash on some caches to get our find numbers up for the blitz game. In total we attempted 8 cache find and we managed to find them all Very Happy
On arrival at ground zero we had a good search a round as the previous log mentions there were multiple spots this could have been. We had a vigorous search and managed to locate the cache container in good order and well hidden. TFTC Clan Cerberus

Sadly could not locate this cache today. There are multiple hiding spots with multiple logs in the immediate vicinity of GZ. Light was falling fast but experience and other hides didn't help in locating this cache today. Going to have to revisit this one shortly. Good thing I am only about half a kilometre away. Chirpy was still functioning but a cacher needed to be very close. Battery replaced and now can be detected from up to 10m away. So, fully operational again.

Walking up and down the street past the posted co-ords, but alas no chirping was to be heard. Nothing for it but to ring the CO. CO was very kind and came down to the posted co-ords to check on things. Turns out there may have been an issue, so the chirp details were sourced via another means and I was off the make the find.

As I had one more cache to try and grab before dark, I was in hurry and of course made the mistake of heading off the track too soon, only to find myself in swamp of sorts. Retrace my step, found the right approach and after a short search the cache was in hand. Quickly signed the log and then headed back along the path to the car and set off the last of the day.....still a good 15klms away.

Thanks 2y'stassies.....appreciate your assistance at the posted co-ords....and for the bonus cache coming up!!!

Catching up with some logs I missed while on a caching trip in the Northwest with GooseandEgg. Sorry I put them off and then lost my fieldnotes.
Thanks for another great cache.

The weekend was a good round of 'firsts' for me, in a GCA sense. First nightcache, first podcache and now my first chirp. The chirp spoke to us late Saturday afternoon and we stored the information until we were in the area today. Walking to GZ I recognized some features as I had been along here with the family before. That was for a bit of a wander but today we were here with a purpose so it was down to business. We made good progress and the only possible awkward area had been made easier so we had no issues. Using the hint made us laugh due to the amount but knowing the landscape had changed due to extreme weather last year I found one that looked the part and yep we were spot on. Two more to squeeze in before the event. TFTC

This was new ground for us, we've never done a beacon cache before. Got some advice on the technology then off to make the find. All good on a beautiful afternoon for caching. TFTC

Out and about for the Clan Minotaur Summer Scavenger Series 2016/17 Clan Minotaur finding caches that fitted our criteria and this was one of them.

Arrived at GZ and soon had info from chirp. Nice to chat with CO as the info downloaded Very Happy

Chirpy certainly sounded like a bird with attitude - a great way to remember him.

A quick find once at GZ and a blank log book was an added bonus. A joint [*FTF*] with whitewebbs at 13.30 hrs

Thanks 2y'stassies for placing and maintaining this cache for our enjoyment and providing great caches for us to find during the games.

FTF @ 1330 with Tassie Trekkers. We headed out today with Mum muggle in tow and decided to combine a family outing with caching and headed North west for the day, choosing appropriate caches to do so Mum Muggle wasn't left in the car too long. When we arrived at GZ we met one of the CO's, had a quick chat, retrieved the chirp details via the gps and off to a joint FTF. This is our first GCA beacon cache. TFTC
