Description

After you have fed the lorries - how about a ride on the elephant

This is Elephant Rock at Currumbin, the remnants of a wave cut platform formed about 20 million years ago. It been known by other names - Green Rock and Peak Rock. No doubt the local aboriginals had a name for this outcrop of rocks but perhaps that name has been lost in time. Viewed from side, particularly the southern side it looks just like a reclining elephant with its trunk straight out in front of it.

Because its always been a popular spot to climb and take in the view, the council has constructed steps and a fenced platform on top of the highest part of the rock structure. Ironically it looks somewhat like a howdah or a basket used to carry passengers on the back of elephants.

To log this cache please take a photo of your favourite part of the view from the top of the lookout. Be warned that the final set of steps to the top are steep and narrow. If you feel physically unable to complete the climb I will accept a photo from the side showing the incumbent elephant. Best spot for this is from the sand on the southern side. But do try the climb - the view is magnificent!

Found on our trip on the Big Island

I thought I logged this back in 2019 when I was last at Swell. Anyways, here I am again checking out the interesting sculptures. It was the best weather for it. Unfortunately I left my swimming gear and sunscreen in the car, and the car at the top of the hill. I bet there's a boring QLD trig in the scrub up at the top of that hill. I was exhausted after the climb back up to the car so just drove around the top and back down. I couldn't help but wonder if this here location was once a trig also. There was a giant flower on top today. Wouldn't it be lovely if QLD put big rock flowers like this one at the top of all significant surveying hills as trigs. It would have motivated me to bush bash and look to see if there was one up where I parked. Haha.

Back to the main event: the sculptures.
I had planned to drop in here on my way home after checking out the Chiharu Shiota exhibition yesterday but i ran out of time because I didn't leave home till late morning. That meant having to return again today before it finished. I'm glad I did just for seeing a few pieces of art I enjoyed looking at. I'd love to have a smaller version of the boat and birds turning on the post for my tiny potted garden. I'm sure I could whip something similar up if I really wanted to, not. haha.

I have attached the required photo for this virtual - a beautiful flower on a beautiful day. And in case you feel like checking it out, here's a link with my fave sculptures at Swell and a video I pieced together from my fave bits of the QAGOMA exhibit yesterday. photos.app.goo.gl/2gdifvzb7gengvCP8

This morning, I topped up my go explore pass, hopped on a bus and headed up to Currumbin to go and find some caches.
I ended up wandering in the direction of Palm Beach and targeted a few hides in particular, though I didn't get quite as far north as I expected, having somewhat overestimated my phone battery's mileage!

I believe this is my third visited Elephant Rock after the Victorian relative near Beaconsfield and another at Bushrangers Bay.
Neither of them have stairs though, making this one particularly noteworthy!
I headed up and was pleasantly surprised to see a CoastSnap station installed to monitor the beach landscape, so my picture has been taken in its holder.

Thanks to petan for this virtual! Very Happy

I found this location before really realising about GCA, but I have a photo of the location that is what is required for the logging of this cache,

Thanks to the CO for the Cache,

Had to laugh as we walked up the steep stairs to this one when a muggle coming down said, "You wouldn't want to do that drunk!!"
But the views from the top were spectacular, although a little hazy.
Took a photo both ways.
Thanks.

I have ridden the elephant. We saddled up the geo-bikes and pedalled furiously into a headwind. After perilous journey dodging the walkers on the ocean way, we arrived to find stairs. As I slowly climbed up to the Howdah I reminded myself that if Samboo could do it, then so could I. It was such a great view at the top that many photographs were taken. We descended to our geo-bikes and enjoyed the tailwind pushing us home. TFTC

In the area today doing some hiding and finding and thought it was about time I logged this one. I haven't ridden the elephant since I was a kid. I do like visiting the nearby beach though. My kids just love Currumbin Creek. It was such a beautiful day; there were heaps of people about - but only a couple on top of the rock. Took a photo of the view, then climbed back down and drove to Rainbow Bay for a cool down and a rest after a busy day caching. Thanks petan!

I was in the area doing some cache maintenance (very close by) and took the climb.

I always enjoy the views from up here but today a storm had just passed over and the sun was setting so I got a different view from the lookout as the sun painted the western sky.

We couldn't get a park anywhere near Elephant Rock today so while MrG car-sat in an unconventional park, Neutral I ran to the lookout. We've been here previously and knew the views are amazing. It would have been great to have taken the time to appreciate them fully but if MrG had had to move on there's no telling where/if I'd have found him again. Despite every carpark along the beach being chockers, at least everyone wasn't at the lookout - in fact there were only two. Very Happy TFTC Petan

Plenty of people around here today. what a warm and sunny morning. saw some whales as well. TFTC
