Description

To celebrate the last few days of the Summer Scavenger Series, here is a T5 virtual at one of the most beautiful locations in Canberra.

I will not address the history of Springbank Island because there is a local GCA puzzle cache that makes you research that! But for any tourist visiting Canberra, this is one of the greatest spots for a BBQ and a game of cricket/football - when you find access to either a canoe or a ferry, it is a very easy journey to the island. Make sure you spend a long time on the island, because you will absolutely love the area. There is plenty of space for you and your family to do whatever you like, while still being surrounded by the majestic waters and views of Lake Burley Griffin.

To claim this cache, you need to be STANDING ON THE JETTY at Springbank Island and take a photo of yourself or your GPS (or both) up close with the jetty. You cannot take a long distance shot of the jetty because that means you didn't actually visit the location - so you must make sure that you are literally touching the jetty in order to claim this virtual. While you're here, make sure to get the many GC and GCA caches that are on this great island, as well as the other caches on the lake.

Enjoy! FTF honours goes to...

Mr. President and Governors of the Academy, Committee Members, fellows, my very noble and approved good masters, my colleagues, my friends, my fellow-students.
In the great wealth, the great firmament of your nation's generosity, this particular choice may perhaps be found by future generations as a trifle eccentric, but the mere fact of it--the prodigal, pure, human kindness of it--must be seen as a beautiful star in that firmament which shines upon me at this moment, dazzling me a little, but filling me with warmth and the extraordinary elation, the euphoria that happens to so many of us at the first breath of the majestic glow of a new tomorrow.
From the top of this moment, in the solace, in the kindly emotion that is charging my soul and my heart at this moment, I thank you for this great gift which lends me such a very splendid part in this, your glorious occasion.
Thank you.

Came to Springbank to collect a few caches today. Including this one

Funnily enough, as I arrived, so did some others, on this here jetty (I had just beached my kayak on the west side of the island).

They had walked off when I came to take the photo. I took photo.. looked over and a bunch of people were running toward me!

hahah - they thought I was about to steal their boat lol

Quick conversation and all that, amused at the situation, we headed off in separate directions

I paddled over and took selfies here sometime last year (probably around this time of year, actually) but for some reason I forgot to do a log... so... was just paddling past, after chasing a balloon down the lake (paddling on the lake while the balloons launch is so much fun Smile and figured I may as well just do it again, and log it this time... so here I am sitting nearby in my kayak, logging on my phone Smile
I couldn't be bothered climbing out of my kayak this time (didn't need to visit the facilities at the other end of the island), so I took a selfie while hanging onto the end of the jetty...

Made it to the island today to attend the event. Hard work paddling against the wind and just glad I didn't fall in the lake. Been here a few times as G and I used to sail on the lake with the ANU Sailing Club. Cool to get the virtual today - thanks TH Smile

I went sailing with friends today on Lake Burley Griffin. We stopped for a picnic lunch on Springbank Island. So I took the opportunity for this hard-to-get-to cache. Very Happy

A nice paddle (again) out to this one at around 0730 this morning. Yes it is a nice place. A quick photo or two and I was making my way back.
I did get buzzed by a drone while I was out there, but pretty sure it didn't belong to Tankengine.
