Description

Goulburn Rocky Hill War Memorial

The War Memorial is a square tower of stone conglomerate and concrete standing 20 meters high, with Rocky Hill as it's pedestal. Inside the tower is a tablet inscribed with the names of those who enlisted from the district. The lookout gallery at the top of the Memorial gives great views of Goulburn and the surrounds.

A valuable collection of WWI artefacts is housed in the adjacent cottage. It consists of weapons, personal items used by soldiers, memorabilia and medals. The local history room displays Goulburn's association with, and contribution to, the two world wars. Each object tells a unique story of survival, mateship and the history of warfare.

On first sight the War Memorial looks more like one of the look-out towers that Goulburn residents are most familiar with outside the town's high security prison or correctional centre – perhaps this accounts for the rotating light beacon on top of the Memorial and its floodlighting at night. Some people also find the tower's design to be reminiscent of the pylons of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which was under construction at about the same time.

Inside the tower is a simple though pleasant wooden board inscribed with the words “Lest we Forget”, situated behind an eternal flame (electric!), with a large white marble Honour Roll of the names of those who enlisted in World War I from the Goulburn area.

The questions for this history cache can be found on the photos along the steps inside the War Memorial. Please note the opening times of the tower!

Note: The gates and grounds at Rocky Hill are open daily from 07:00 till 17:00. The War Memorial tower is open on Wednesdays 9am-3pm, Saturday and Sunday 10:00 till 16:00. The Museum is open on Wednesdays 09:00 till 14:00, and Saturday and Sunday 10:00 till 15:00.

#GA5514 - 11:30; On a caching mission around Goulburn with Sol de lune and we found ourselves at the Memorial for a few caches. First time I've actually been inside the edifice here! Gathered the required information and headed to the top to check out the view before setting off on the hunt again. Didn't get into the museum today, but will be back for that another day. Visited the memorial with family today. Great to see the improvements to the carpark and the new building housing relics. After viewing the displays within the old cottage and the new one, we headed into the tower. Complied with the Covid precautions, and was able to source the answers. Very glad to have finally logged a smilie for this cache. Very Happy

When selecting some caches to do today we thought we had better try this one as today is Wednesday and the place was supposed to be open. Imagine our dismay when we pulled up at lunchtime, walked up to the tower and the door was locked!!!!
Suspect that the museum is also closed at the moment and there is quite a bit of new building happening beside that.
Have included a couple of photos to show we were actually here.
This monument certainly stands out as you enter this city so it was good to come up here and see what it was all about.
Thanks.

Day 17 Mainland trip
Out and about caching in Goulburn and we decided to head to the War Memorial as it beckoned us from above. A very interesting memorial but a pity it is all locked up. I think there are works going on around the site but the building was padlocked. Had to guess the answers. There was a very informative sign at the Memorial so at least I know how it came about. A great view from here. TFTV

There have been some improvements to the surrounding area since our last visit here a few years ago. Lots of interesting reading and history. THanks for taking us back there to the war memorial. TFTC Clan MinotaurClan Minotaur

Goulburn trip January 6th 2019. I decided to come up to Goulburn to try and grab the caches that were ready to be found. The trip up Mount Grey was the highlight. A good day and it was not too hot.

Thanks

Wish I'd read the description before coming up here - it needs to be open to complete it. Darn. If I hadn't come up here I may have found a couple more FTFs in town and a couple of geocachers finding them. haha.
Oh well. Merry Christmas. Smile

This is a wonderful place to visit. The nearby Museum has some amazing gear for a little building and the tower is not only beautiful but has amazing 360 deg views across Goulburn. We had the tower to ourselves the day we visited which was blowing a gale and inside the wind couldn't reach us and we could enjoy the views with the gorgeous warm sunshine beaming through the windows on our bodies, it was so nice. Could have stayed here all day long. The photos were I suppose interesting, they are not really my cup of tea so I didn't pay too much attention. Did indeed find the tower interesting though. Thanks for the cache MavEtJu.

I've seen the memorial from afar but never been inside it. Quite interesting history. Thanks for the cache. Very Happy

Love the location as I had been here before, so returning today was not a punishment. Unfortunately turned up 10 to 4 and the tower itself was already locked. However I was able to have a look inside and get part of the info, enough to answer the questions and still made some amazing pictures of the sunset after finishing the cache.

I joined the Canberra Bushwalk Club for a walk around Goulburn today and we made our way up to this wonderful memorial. The doors were open today so I managed to gather the answers for this cache. My grandfather was in the 7th Lighthorse Brigade and walked in the parade through London at the end of the war. Lots of reasons to give this cache an Outstanding Award. Thanks a lot for the cache !
