Description

From the website Australian Aboriginal Astronomy

Across Australia are many different rich and vibrant Aboriginal cultures, each with its own astronomy. But there are common threads. Many have stories of a female Sun who warmed the land, and a male Moon who was once a young slim man (the waxing crescent Moon), but grew fat and lazy (the full Moon). But then he broke the law, and was attacked by his people, resulting in his death (the new Moon). After remaining dead for 3 days, he rose again to repeat the cycle, and continues doing so till this day. The Kuwema people in the Northern Territory say that he grows fat at each full moon by devouring the spirits of those who disobey the tribal laws.

Some Aboriginal people use the sky as a calendar to tell them when it's time to move to a new place and a new food supply. The Boorong people in Victoria know that when the "Mallee-fowl" constellation (Lyra) disappears in October, to "sit with the Sun", it's time to start gathering her eggs on Earth. Other groups know that when Orion first appears in the sky, the Dingo puppies are about to be born.

The stars are also law-books, telling people how to live on Earth. The Yolngu people of Arnhem Land say that the constellation of Orion, which they call Julpan, is a canoe. They tell the story of two brothers who went fishing, and caught and ate a fish that was forbidden under their law. Seeing this, the Sun sent a waterspout that carried the two brothers and their canoe up into the sky where you can still see them.

When Yolngu people die, they are taken by a mystical canoe, Larrpan, to the spirit-land (Baralku) in the sky, where you can see their camp-fires burning along the edge of the great river of the Milky Way. The canoe is sent back to earth as a shooting star, letting their family on Earth know that they have arrived safely in the spirit-land. At a beautiful and important ceremony, the Yolngu people gather after sunset to await the rising of Barnumbirr, or Morning Star, which Europeans call Venus. As she approaches, in the early hours before dawn, she draws behind her a rope of light attached to Earth, and along this rope, with the aid of a richly decorated "Morning Star Pole", the people are able to communicate with their dead loved ones, showing that they still love and remember them.

But you don't have to travel to the North of Australia to learn about Aboriginal Astronomy. On a autumn evening, anywhere in Australia, find a dark location, well away from street-lights, and look in the South-East for a great dark shape in the sky, with a black head (the Coalsack, next to the Southern Cross), and dark legs trailing our along the Milky Way to Scorpius. This is the great emu in the sky, the subject of songs and stories in many parts of Australia. Just North of Sydney, in the Ku-ring-gai National Park, are extensive rock engravings of the Guringai people who used to live there, including representations of the creator-hero Daramulan and his emu-wife. On autumn evenings, the emu in the sky stands directly over her portrait, just at the time when it's time to gather emu eggs. Is that why the Guringai people carved her picture just there, in just that direction? Sadly, the people who could have told us have long since disappeared.

Have waited a long time to grab this one. Today I sat and ate my lunch under the big Morten Bay fig and waited for the fitness freaks to finish before making the find. All in good order.

First time visiting the Observatory today. I've been wanting to come here for years. I have been subscribed to their newsletters and printed their sky maps for a long time now. It was great to finally get here. However, there was so much I had no clue about in here. I'm going to have to come back and do a tour. And the Planetarium was closed. Must see that one day.

Anyhow - a geocache was a bonus here for me - 3 including trigs. And of course I had to get the geocache over before the Observatory or I would be thinking about it the whole time. haha. I noticed something out of the ordinary as soon as I reached GZ but thought it was a sticker so moved on to looking EVERYWHERE else and resorting to the hint... which gave me a new angled perspective. AHA! Got you! I love a good hunt and find. Smile

In the city with Wazza9 and Nana Nel for some Aussie Day festivities. We were returning from the bridge and took a detour to do a spot of caching in this beautiful park. Whilst busy reading the info, Wazza9 retrieved the cache. Great hide.

Found 1:48pm. I was in the city and decided to go over here and do the GA caches / trigs here. I've had my eye on these but always seemed to miss the opportunity this time I seized it and got the caches done. I like the way this was done very much. Tricky and devious. I had sat down right next to it. Luckily nearby muggles were not really interested in my activity.

Forgot all about logging these caches that I did while I was off work. Caught the train to Central when I then went for a walk up into the Pyrmont area and a bit beyond, managed to find a few caches along the way then started heading to the bridge to get a photo for the new virtual. Stopped here and got a bit confused as what I needed to do. Found a waypoint of a cache that may be premium as I couldn't find details of what else it could be. After studying this turned around and spotted what I needed to do for the cache. Soon had it in my hands & I signed the log. Thanks for the cache Team MavEtJu

#GA1751 - 12:50; In Sydney with the geohoney for the weekend and after a late breakfast, she headed into the CBD for some retail therapy, while I headed off to one of my favorite parts of the city to collect some new caches which have appeared since my last visit. Found myself at GZ and had some idea of what I might be looking for, but it wasn't until I was sitting down, having gathered information for the GC multi that I spotted something suspicious and soon had the cache. Geocaching Australia (GCA) Cache Find Number 1532. Walking around the rocks area during a work visit.

Keeping my GCA streak going - getting close to that next target of 90 days in a row - today I was staying nearby and I had tried this one last night but couldn't work out exactly where I was supposed to be. Went for an early morning walk today and it all fell into place and the very nicely set up cache was quickly found. Great views ! Signed the log, replaced the cache. Great views from here. Another find for me and Clan Cerberus ! Yah !

TFTC !!

Awesome little cache! I ride past here on my way to work each day but usually have no time to cache so today when not in a rush I made sure I stopped by. Rescued the travel bug. Saw an old memory nearby and smiled... that was a good one too. Cheers, top spot and cool hide!

Yay, first FTF for the year! 4 days until the 'event' is rather unexpected, but sadly typical for GCA traditionals.

I had a long workshop that finished early, and I needed to clear my head, so decided to walk to this cache, some 500m from the office. There was a wedding party nearby, but they weren't interested in me. I wondered at first if I was in the right spot, but soon determined what I needed to do - CIH! I signed the log, replaced the container, then headed back to the office. TFTC
