As this cache has been out of action for too long, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

TNXPro was on a mission today to clear a little bit more of Waihi and with no plans of my own I figured I'd may as well join him. We'd completed the loop and it was time to head upwards. It had been roughly 16 months since the last official find on this cache and I'd previously I emailed the CO (23/01/2018) to organise a replacement cache depending on how successful we would be on our search. Naturally after 3 years of inactivity my communication with the CO stated "A non-reply will be deemed as a - Sure go a head guys!" Big GrinBig Grin

Once at the top the significant clearing of the surrounding area was plain to see - but the search continued. I fact it was over an hour with 2 of us on the hunt before finally making the call to drop the replacement. I dare say though - without the CO intervention this cache will surely be archived. The silver lining is that then a new cache can be published.

Over 3 years since CO last logged in. The cache isn’t the only thing that’s gone Smile

Hi

It appears that this cache has been inactive for quite some time. Is it going to be replaced or should it be archived to make room for possible future caches? If the cache owner does not contact me within Three Weeks, I'll assume the cache needs to be archived.

While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you and block other cachers from entering the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time, we can't do so forever. Please either repair/replace this cache, or archive it so that someone else can place a cache in the area, and geocachers can once again enjoy visiting this location. Also, if you haven’t done so already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to geocaching in the past and am looking forward to seeing your cache up and running in the future.

Thanks for your understanding,

Regards,

Far too long!

25-Feb-17
No cache found here - enjoyed the area though
Didn't realise there was a problem here as the last logs were all found it logs - however now see they are just fake finds.

25-Feb-17
Having read recent logs (March 2016 to Feb 2017) cache is either missing / or needs a maintenance visit.

12-Feb-17
There's been a huge amount of cutting down up here and GZ is a pile of brushwood. The cache, such as was left, is almost certainly gone. However, after slogging all the way up here, I hope the CO will be satisfied with a photolog. TFTC.

#8686, 11:23,
During our holidays in Newzealand we searched some Caches.
We are sure that this box has gone. We think a fotolog is sufficient. We could not place a box meeting the description.
Thanks for placing and maintaining this box

Together with arbor95 I am on a holiday tour in New Zealand. Cool

We are two Germans, old friends since a long time. Together we visited a lot of other countries in the past, even before we started geocaching. [^]

For our trip we usually looking for some extraordinary caches. Wink

Therefore we had mostly a lot of fun. Big Grin

It was a nice hike. When we started the rain has stopped and the way uphill we had all sunny. At GZ we saw that here had someone cleaned up and a lot of small trees and bushes had gone. We tried to find the box nearby, but nothing to get. Therefore we made a photolog.

Thank You very much for this geocache, for the challenge and for the maintaining.

Greetings from tripleclaus to The Goaties. Smile

We looked at this a few weeks ago when we did the trail caches but was running out of time. Glad we made the effort today. It started out raining but soon the sun came out and it was sweltering. Had to imagine where picnic table was then head in the right direction. With a bit of fossiking soon had nice large container in hand. Unfortunately it was full of water and log book saturated and unsignable. Sorry but I have run out of waterproof logs. Thanks for the cache.

12-Oct-16
After very muddy...slippery slog I finally located the trig and began the search...finally located the cache in poor condition..very wet log in fact too wet to sign...signed the lid instead. The cache was full of water so all very wet...left in the sun to dry for a while as I needed a rest after the climb...but it needs maintenance urgently..I replaced as found thanks for an interesting cache and a big insite to the vast mining thats going on

2052 After living in the area for awhile as a child have always wanted to do this hill. Now I have a reason. After doing the circuit of the hill in the rain and cold so thought I would try for the summit. Expecting it to be impossible at the top but the weather cleared and it was rather nice. Circled around for awhile before making the find. Log was very wet and I more scratched my name than wrote it. Pleased I did come up as it cleared the hill of caches.

Mopping up some caches that I forgot to log. The date was somewhere about this date. The log was sodden and I didn't have a spare with me. Wonderful views from up here I can just about make out my house. TFTC

Didn't manage to find it last visit, but returned today, in light rain and very determined . Missed on the first pass, but had another go, turning and poking for a very relieved find. Tftc

14-Jan-16
Climb too longer than expected but it was worth it

05-May-15
My second time here too !!!
Can't believe I missed it the first time....There is a definite caching trail leading to it!
Thanks for placing the cache goaties...and thanks Rustynz, rebel98 and gorby for your company on our climb to the top Great to finally sign this one off !

Righto! I had breakfast with my super cool travelling companions back at the George St bach owned by supernanny's brother. When I returned back there after a few early morning caches, they were up and almost ready for another days caching adventure, I scoffed down some eggs on toast and much needed coffee then we were all off to this cache, much anticipation involved here!! I had not done this cache before but my companions had been here before but had not been able to log a smiley (DNF's) so with me tagging along we had an extra pair of eyes to help in the search. We parked up in Rebel's car, walked to the start of the walk and I wanted to take a foto of us all, some other people came out of somewhere and someone from my group suggested to get one of them to take a foto of us about to ascend the hill. (Foto included). We huffed and puffed up the hill, I took more fotos, such nice views going up the hill. Eventually we made the summit and I paced out the required steps and rusty slid down the bank and while I was still searching, she yells out: "I found it, I found it" She couldn't believe it! It was so easy on her second visit, she couldn't understand how she missed it the first time. Supernanny couldn't believe it either! It was her second visit too. So we took the cache up the bank to the trig, rusty had gloves and toilet paper to clean up the cache container and we all signed the log! I took some fotos to mark the occasion and we carried on down the hill back to the car! Thank you so much goaties for the cache, this well deserves a fav from me for the adventure!!!!!! Cool

03-May-15
We are off on an aventure weekend this will be one of many to come after a hard hill climb found with great relief Tftc.

03-May-15
This was a return visit for us, after a previous DNF, so was a little apprehensive on the upward journey. I knew others had found the cache so it had to be there. Thankfully its much cooler today, the sun is still shining, but not the heat like last time. The views are just amazing, the track a little slippery in places with the dew.

Eventually we found ourselves at the top, and this time it was an easy find. What was different is that I had rebel98, Gorby and Supernanny with me, so when I went off track, they knew where to pick up the body Big Grin

I just did not go far enough. We gave the container a good clean out, as there was a good amount of water at the bottom. Dried the bags, and had no problems signing the log. Thanks for the hide and bringing us here, finding the cache better done in the morning if taking photos.

08-Apr-15
Steep climb, great for the ham strings, and the view is massive. Lots of treasure! Most of it was wet though.

04-Apr-15
A good workout to get there but great views on a great day. TFTC

15-Mar-15
This was my main target for the day, as its a nice D/T rating, some huffy-puffy-exercise & great views too. Got to the trig & headed off towards what I thought was a likely hiding place - nothing. Rechecked the hint & checked old logs for an idea of where the bench used to be (south) & realised I'd walked too far - all good when I followed the hint more closely! Thanks for the incentive to come up the hill, TFTC

06-Feb-15
Out and about in Waihi today before the BBQ and Camp-Out Event at Dickey's Flat campsite gathering requirements towards our GIO Licence challenge. Eventually made it up to the top after the steep slog and incline during this steaming hot day. The picnic table is no longer there, so the hint may ned updating, but we were fortunate enough to manage to find the cache! Pleasant views at the top, so it was worth all the hard work! Thanks for the hide. Big Grin

03-Jan-15
Took a little while but we found it - good hint, but the picnic bench is no longer there. Log book is still damp - probably needs a couple of hours in the sun, but once we found the cache we were gone! Off to look for another cache (a DNF unfortunately) then back home for hubby to milk.... TFTC - great to find one when we've made the effort to walk up the hill. A very enjoyable walk too Smile

01-Jan-15
Sadly we didn't find this .....had extensive search ....Didn't help that the park bench had gone .....

24-Oct-14
I needed this cache to help fill a gap on my D/T grid so did the hard slog up and made this find while enjoying the views.

23-Sep-14
It is great to have such a specific hint, as you wouldn't want to come up here and have a DNF. Interesting view, Waihi township looks bigger than I expected it would.
The cache was wet, so we wiped it all out. The log book is fine. I took the plastic sea creatures for a friend who teaches new entrants. They are very keen on the class plastic animals collection and do lots of sorting into categories, but she was just saying she needed more insects and sea creatures. Left our largest swag in return.
Thanks for the walk and a good sized cache. A fav.

02-Jun-14
Followed the geotrail to the cache. Nice size cache. Tool the TB. nice view from up here. Tftc

11-May-14
I wouldn't have found the track if I hadn't known a cache was up there. Great view of Waihi and the Mine from up there. Left trackable. TFTC Smile. PS: the bench has gone but not the cache Big Grin

30-Apr-14
Notice I must have missed clicking 'submit log entry' as this one isn't showing up as a smiley.
Mum and Dad slowly walked back to the car wile I nipped up the hill - if you can call it nipping.
Was very glad to get to the top, especially as I had pushed myself as didn't want to leave M&D at the car for too long.
With the picnic table gone and no Manuka, it took the previouse log and luckily their trail to find the cache.
Cache and log very wet. Could do with a clean out. TFTC

25-Apr-14
I wasn't quite prepared to climb a hill this morning but since it wasn't to much of a climb I ventured out to the summit. Once at the top, I managed to follow the geo-trail to the cache. Cache nicely tucked away from the usual muggle paths. TFTC.

22-Apr-14
Great little climb. My coordinates were out by a few metres but using the directions it was an easy find. The table has gone but it wasn't hard to guess the direction it had been from the trig. Tftc

22-Apr-14
Thanks for bringing us up here. Great views, and a pleasant little outing. The Clues definately helped in locating this one. Smile

03-Jan-14
Decided to take the challenge and climb to the top, following the long yellow strips. Its worth it for the view, now if only I could find the cache. I looked for 20 minutes or more.

I worried that I might fall over the edge, in my efforts to find a container that might have rolled down the hill.

I was being attacked by gorse, blackberry and other prickly plants (why did I not bring gloves!)

The cache, was it hiding in the privet that seems to be taking over?

The fern growing nearby was looked at closely, thinking that this would be an ideal hiding spot, not for this cache.

How did all this cow poo get up here, and what did they eat?

I counted out from the trig station, used GPS co-ordinates, hoped that the geocache would leap out and want to be found, but no it stay hiding.

Why did they take away the seat? I needed a place to think

This diversion took in total over an hour (geocaching time - from turn off, search and return).

Just before crossing last stile I see a lonely steer sheltering under a tree. I get all brave, and see I am not wearing red today, make my way to the fence. Safely over the other side, I was disappointed to arrive empty handed after so many successes today. It was time to admit that this challenge has been left to someone else Sad

23-Nov-13
I intended this to be the first for the day but missed the correct yellow markers through the farm. For future reference DO NOT follow the little yellow triangles around the hill, but set your sights on the tall yellow marker poles through the paddocks. The track has recently been sprayed so it was easy to negotiate the trail to the top. A few short steep bits to scramble up, but they are more character building than anything else. You are rewarded with a great view at the top. The cache was collecting water which I emptied out. The logbook was appropriately themed for the Black Hills cache, being black, and beginning to camo itself with black mould. Although damp, there was no need to leave an alternative as it is still serviceable. TFTC

#100 Saved this peak for our 100th cache.
I agree with ozzawazza, the picnic table is gone and the final location is quite prickly with blackberry. Perhaps the next cacher to visit may like to bring something to cut it back with.
To clarify the direction to walk (see hint), I will upload a photo that is taken in the direction of where the picnic table would have been. In case you are reading this from your GPS and don't have access to photos, the direction is: as if you have reached the trig and carry on straight past it. The cache/log was a little damp but able to be signed. TFTC SmileSmile

15-Jun-13
Nice walk to the top, easy find...TFTC

15-Jun-13
The instructions for walking 3 mts and 4 mts are good, only the picnic table is gone, strange that, so just face south along the ridge. I did find the co-ordinates about 5-6 mts out and it is a bit prickly with blackberry.
I took the TB that friend curriepie had left there 10mths ago and was wondering why it hadn't moved on.
The log book was damp, and there was water in the bottom of the cache but the many creatures in the cache were okay.

21-Dec-12
After eventually finding the correct way up here and searching the GZ for 10 minutes, I decidec that it is to much vegetation to find a box which wasn't found for months.
Thanks anyway for the nice walk and the view!

Haven't been up here for a good while now so great to come back for another 360.About an inch of water inside, & pens not working so dried out as much as I could, double-bagged the damp logbook & left a pencil. Left TB Downhill Biker. Took Zork 54. Gave it a favourite..all lower geo's washed away!TFTC

Really steep hill our last cache of the day. But was pooring with rain.

26-Apr-12
After my earlier days adventures of "Hot Springs Loop Track and Mt Baldy" the legs were feeling a bit tired and protesting at the continued abuse that they were receiving, but set the mind to the challenge of completing the "Domain" and make "Black Hill".

I obviously did not read the description properly as walked around the domain before realsiing I should have done this one first and the others later. Never mind, slog to the top, with a couple of rest stops on the way, Made it, Yippee, Cache in great condition, Soon had Log signed and heading back to the car after a great days caching and tramping.

Thanks for a great cache and a great final walk/climb of the day, TFTC,

18-Jan-12
Pleasant weather, good company -descended down the south side of Black Hill through the pungas to the Ohinemuri river walkway.

03-Jan-12
Parked at in the cul-de-sac at the end of Domain Rd, off Clarke St. Walked a bit too far around the hill, expecting to find an official way across the paddocks to the yellow markers. Turns out taking the track to GC2KWGF http://coord.info/GC2KWGF takes you PAST the beginning of the yellow pole track up the hill. The track up the hill was very slippery today after a few days of rain. Cache was found easily enough. Great views from up there. Pity the weather wasn't better.

22-Dec-11
Found when out with family on a day trip

22-Dec-11
Found it while out with the geo family nice walk up to the top and a good day for photos took 2cent geocoin

11-Dec-11
Skipped across the paddock after finding the lower cache & followed the poles to the top. Good stretch of the legs. Cache easily found. Plastic bag for logbook replaced. In: TB 2c coin... You'll have earned it by the time you get to the top. TFTC

20-Nov-11
We have driven through Waihi on a number of occasions but with never enough time to locate this cache. Howver this time we made sure we had some spare time to make it to the top. Like several other cachers, we followed the track to the other cache nearby. We then proceeded on the same track and virtually walked right around Black Hill before coming across the yellow markers.Sad So after some unnecessary walking we headed up the hill meeting some frienly cattle on the way. Once at the top & using the clue we soon located the cache. Appears we just missed MarMiss on our travels. Awesome views. As Hillary said...We knocked the bastard off... TFTC.

20-Nov-11
PFff. I know now why you have this cachername. You really need to be a goat to go to this cache. We and our specially our doggies were not such a fan of the cows. And on our way back we choose to walk through the bush. The cows keep on chasing us.
Arriving at the top gave us such a good feeling. A little search and yeah the crown on the trip. What a great spot. The views were amazing after a real climb. We loved it. Left TB from Germany, on the way to Australia.
Reward with favorites point.

#386, 14:45, nice lookout, good climbing. Thanks.

A good reward for the effort. Good lookout to give an idea of the scale of the mining.

Thank goodness your is spot on. I would have been pretty disapointed not to find it after the walk. All good, thankyou.

I asked a local near the start of the walking track about the track to the top and he said that it goes to the left so that is what I did. I also didn't see any yellow markers on this track. After circumnavigating Black Hill and arriving back at the start I did notice something yellow at the far side of the paddock and decided to go for it. It turned out to be right. After getting a good cardiovascular worket I finally had the cache in hand.

Cheers for the cache.

27-Sep-09
Found with a bit of hunting. Had to resort to using the clue which helped heaps. Coords a bit out

19-Apr-09
Made this way more difficult than it needed to be, followed the track beside the creek and ended up walking right around the base of the hill and back where I started. Missed the summit track altogether, back tracked a bit and found a yellow cows ear tag nailed to a post and thought this must be it. Sure enough, found my way to the top. I'm glad I didn't give up, the views were well worth the effort. TFTC.

Followed the instructions by following the stream, just about walked right round the damn hill before even going up!! made adjustments to our track on the way back cutting out alot of unnecessary walking. Great views and a fascinating area.
Took us 50mins to get to the summit and only 20 to get back!!

Made this a lot harder for ourselves than it should have been, initially took the wrong approach. Rewarded by some awesome and interesting views once we made it to the top. The Freezer Mice strike again!!!
Joint find along with Boges and the Twigster on what turned out to be an afternoon/evening caching mission.
Nice spot for a cache, and a beaut view to boot.
Had to make this a quick turnaround at the top as we could see the rain bearing down on us.

02-Nov-08
Took a trip up the hill to locate geocache. Spent an hour scrabbling about in the undergrowth, eventually found. The area used to be covered in light bracken but has become really overgrown with honeysuckle. Checked the contents and dried things off. Re-hid in a more obvious location and have changed the hint accordingly.

31-Oct-08
In Waihi for the afternoon and wanted to get all 3 of Goaties but couldn't find this one. Phoned others but no one from Hamilton had attacked this one other than Zorgon who I couldn't get. I had trouble finding bracken as it has been choked by creepers. bugger. Also a windfall in the area?

Parked at Gilmore park and walked from there. It was a hot day, but the views of gold mining in action were interesting. Stood on tne cache before seeing it! A good generous size. Thanks for placing this cache - it was a one hour return walk we would not have done otherwise.

Nice walk up to the summit from the carpark. Temperature was getting up there so relieved to reach the summit and a nice cool breeze blowing. Saw no sign of microscopic morris TB. TFTC

First one for the day, great views. Those mine tailings are a worry. Dislodged resident snail from container and rehid as well as we could, but the vegetation is a bit spindly at this time of year. TFTC

Second find for the day started rather late in the afternoon. Great view from the top!! Young muggles found as they reached the top first....

04-Jun-07
Well, no guilt of not getting enough exercise after that little walk. Pleased the track was dry, it's pretty steep near the top. Awesome views and I was totally blown away by the extent and size of the mining operations.
Excellent cache, thoroughly enjoyed it, many thanks.
