Spent the day checking out the old town site- my god parents lived here years ago
TFTCNot a fan of these bumpy roads. However we found it. Fantastic day for a drive in the outback. We poped down to this one from our camp at De Grey River.
Found with e.gregory1 on a trip from Adelaide to north-western WA via Kalgoorlie, Wiluna and Marble Bar. After camping out at Shay Gap we headed to the coast and up to our northern-most target cache before returning south towards Port Hedland, finding caches along the way. Thanks for the cache explorer59!
Found on a trip to Western Australia from Adelaide with FeatherWaite. We camped at Shay Gap then continued to make our way north, finding a few caches of interest along the way. After travelling up the highway to find the old Eighty Mile Beach cache, we headed back towards Port Hedland, taking a short detour to this cache. We walked across from the other side of the railway line to the cache. The container and contents were in good condition. Thanks explorer59 for the cache.
Worth the detour for this one... we missed the first turn off heading past but took the second about 6km from the cache. Nice drive in, bit bumpy in places. Parked 200m from cache and walked in... collecting a few pretty stones as I went. Cache guardian gave up the hoods when I arrived. Cute fellow. Tftc
I was in Hedland with some spare time as the job has been postponed. So, after finally getting Three palms in town and the only other geo not yet aquired is down for maintenance I came for a wonder out here. I Parked on Goldsworthy-shay gap road and walked 200m to the geo. As expected it was a quick find and a great location. I signed the log and left a pathtag.TFTC
On my way to Perth via Broome with a few detours for LGAs. TFTC.
A great trek to get to this one. Glad I dumped the van off after a few KMs.
A great trek to get to this one. Glad I dumped the van off after a few KMs.
Found myself with a ute and an RDO today, so made my way here from Redmond camp about 300km’s to the south!
The road i took in was a bit dodgy, but the new hilux made a breeze of it, and it got me within a couple hundred meters of GZ. After realising i was on the wrong side of the tracks, i parked up and jump the redundant track towards the prize [:o)]
Reading the history of the place on the way, i was soon where i need to be and was surprised to see the container singed from the recent fire but everything unharmed inside
I added my name to the logbook and returned as found before making my way back to the car.
TFTC explorer59 .. love visiting old places like this [^]

Another trip back home and another caching adventure, happy to say we came up trumps here and walked away with a smiley TFTC
It was right in the path of a fire that destroyed just about everything else but remains in perfect condition. Dropped a TB took the pathtag. TFTC explorer59
I was a little concerned re the recent fire scar, but found the cache in good order. Left a pathtag i had a duplicate of for the next finder. Tftc.
Tftc, replaced plastic bags, added new log & replaced damaged swaps (due to recent fire). Also found an old traceable I’ll log
We have come here along a road on the other side of the railway and walked the last 200 meters to the cache.
In this area there was recently a big bushfire: the box itself is OK as it is metal, but the contents of the box was burnt a bit. It was difficult to open the log book without tearing it apart.

Thought we’d take a short detour off the highway to look for this one. Road in was a little tougher than we thought being washed out in one spot. Took an alternative route out where the road was a lot better but required a interesting dry creek crossing. Luckily we have a very sturdy off-road camper and experienced enough to take it very steady. Our route meant we were on the wrong side of the railway with no obvious crossing. So we legged the last couple hundred metres. Cache had been wet at some time but dry enough to sign and give this lonely cache a but of love. Not much of the townsite left to see. TFTC
Out here with my brothers after doing a trip up the Canning Stock route, very interesting. thanks, sorry for the late log.
Great cache. Was hard to believe that there was a town here once! Dropped off a TB.
A friend used to live and work in Goldsworthy which has bought us here today. Bonus to get a cache at the same time. Cache looks tired but remains intact. TFTC
The Big Western Australia trip in 2018. Day 20. After Broome I continued South via Port Hedland to a riverside roadside stop at Yule River. Lots of Driving today.
Wow, how quickly an area returns to natural, just the steel rails to mark the mess they left behind, but that was enough of a problem. I eventually worked out how to get over and found the cache in its interesting hide before leaving to get to Hedland before the shops closed.
Thanks.

After our Parisian trip in the first week of the Easter holidays, we (i and my husband Voske1967) went for 3 weeks to the other side of the world to enjoy the friendly atmosphere, food, landscapes and culture of Australia. Of course, geocaches were also searched for and found in Perth, Monkey Mia, Denham, Newman, Port Hedland ... . This trip downunder will stay with us for a long time! It was pretty hot in Australia for the autumn season
It's a nice day, sunny not too hot so I decided to take a stab at this GC. I like the remote ones. I couldn't find my way onto the access road, so I pulled up on the main road, hopped over the railway line and bush-bashed through the spinifex. Coordinates were spot-on and the hide was glaringly obvious. The cache is in good condition although the cake tin is starting to show signs of rust and won't see too many more wet seasons. TNLNSL TFTC explorer59.
Day 32 on my trip from Perth to the Red Centre Experience in Alice Springs with m4yb and Max the GeoUte pulling Jonathan Swift the Jaycp camper trailer.
What an adventure it has been and great to get some caches along the route.
Now on our homeward journey via some great places and hopefully some great caches.
This was a challenge but worth the trek and heck out the old deserted roads and rails. Always been my ambition to travel the railway service road and I think this was one from my past many years ago when I was working as Tour Manager and Sound Engineer for the Festival of Perth's George Melly and The John Chilton Feet-warmers and the driver got stuck on one of these roads with a huge thunder storm. Great memories and this cache has taken me back there so clearly, well worth a fav for a lot of reasons.

On the way home after the most excellent Red Centre Experience Event at Alice Springs via the top and down the WA coast.
After a very pleasant overnight stay at Pardoo Station we were ready to tackle this one. The road in wasnt too bad even with the camper. We got to 200 odd metres of the cache, and like the previous finders, crossed the defunct railway and walked through the scrub, luckily in long pants. The cache was quickly found, our names added to the log as well as a pathtag.
Thanks for bringing us here!

A quick find, but about 10kms off the highway then a 200m walk over rail tracks and through the scrub to get to the cache. The return was just the reverse, though we travelled south to the highway this time. A pleasant enough drive with generally good roads. I had never been to Goldsworthy during the 70s or 80s when I worked at Newman so this was a first for us. The cache was found easily and is in good condition. SL. Thanks to explorer59 for the cache.
tftc,
Today is day 41 of an adventure that will take me around Australia with a group of trackables as we now head south towards Perth. My caches visited can be tracked by checking out the Key Ring using the code TB4P4C1. The purpose of this note is to visit the trackables travelling with us so that the owners get to learn about this site.
Today takes us to Port Headland and a distance since starting this trip of about 8500 Km's. We left Eighty Mile Beach thinking we would be at PH by lunch. Not to be and we stopped caching at the Marble Bar turn leaving plenty for a return visit. We had 9 found and 2 DNF's. One of the locos that was used to carry ore from this mine is located at the Museum in Port Headland and holds a very special prize for fellow Geocachers.
As a part of my contribution to helping make the "Easter 2017 Red Centre Experience" GC6825Z a great Event, I will be leaving a card in every cache that is large enough to take it. This card provides a number for a trackable so you can "Discover me". There is also the Web page address "red.ozmega.com.au".
Happy caching.

Wazza9 was off the beaten track to find this cache, found the closest point to walk in, scratched my leg on the 1st rise in, eventually got there, no trouble finding the container. signed log and replaced, thanks to explorer59.
Decided to drive in here on our way south. As we were towing a van, we were taking it very slow along the old track alongside the railway line. On arriving at the end, we decided to camp here for the night. Hard to believe there was once a thriving township here. We were hoping to see an ore train passing by, but later we realised that the railway line is not in use at the moment, given the amount of trees growing right in the centre of the line. Looks like a lot of restoration work is going on the railway though, so perhaps trains will once again be using this line one day soon. We had fun exploring the area and finding the cache, which was not too difficult to get too. TFTC and for bringing us to this area.
Picked our way across the railway tracks and through the spinifex to claim this one. It is hard to believe that a town once stood here.
Thanks explorer59

After such a wait I finally got up here and saw what was the old mine and town.
Hard to believe that INXS played at the local Hotel as a bustout gig.

Dead easy find once I'd traipsed through the spinifex to find the old road. Good size cache.
Picked up some firewood here to take with us and followed the railway to the DeGrey river campsite.

I don't know about access here because as soon as you enter the Goldsworthy road there's a sign with a few "easily dismissed" rules stated. Well, we ventured on regardless and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. We arrived at night so stayed with the ghosts in the old townsite but lit a campfire to keep them at bay. Could still hear things moving in the bushes and the odd bump in the night, however. It was a beautifully quiet camp until the wind nearly moved us on in the middle of the night.
Access to the cache is a bit difficult or really difficult depending on your approach. You can battle the spinifex, cross the rail line and a bit of bush for an interesting walk. The alternative is to take the other option. It's about 30km around the mountain on some rough unmaintained tracks with just a few steep gullies and washouts. The view from the summit (well it's missing really. It went to Japan 50 years ago) is spectacular, see the attached photo. Unfortunately at the end of the 30km, just after passing the cache you come to the end of a heavily barricaded road. The only way we could find our way out was across rocky undulating ground for a kilometre or so to the railway crossing.
If you love pretty rocks it's best to stay away. The backpack gets very heavy by the time you get back to your vehicle. [xx(]
There are no TB's in the cache. One was removed by (The) Fisher several years ago. Thanks for bringing us here for a great day out.

On our way from Perth to Darwin we saw many great things and places - many of them thanks to geocaching! We thank the owners for sharing their favorite spots with us by hiding their caches!
Heading south, down the West Australian coast, on our 2nd trip around Australia.
Drove up Goldsworthy road, which was recently graded and well maintained.
It was only a 400 m walk from the old rail crossing.
The back road is in very poor condition, and we choose not to risk our Geo-cruiser on it.
Thanks for the cache, explorer59.

Access from both ends of this road is restricted. BHP appear to now own this area
What a great spot and I always like sites where towns and historic activities were once abundant.
This cache is still in great shape and contains nice goodies.
I took a scull & Cross Bones plastic ring and put in a lego brick.
I walked in and it was a great little hike from the main gravel road.
Good cache explorer59 and I replaced exactly as I found it , apart from the small change mentioned above. It was however rather easy to spot once on the old road.

Finally we have found an occasion to be able to go out and find this cache. In the past it has either been a bit too far from Karratha for a day trip or we have been coming back from Darwin towing the caravan and not felt like turning off.
This time we stopped at DeGrey for the night unhitched, and went back to find the cache. So much has changed out here over the years and the place is now almost totally returned to nature. The old road sign on the highway has gone as has the track that used to lead across to the cache, we travelled up further to cross the line but as it put us at a kilometre from GZ with no vehicle access due to a fence we returned to within 200 metres, crossed the rail on foot and tackled the spinifex.
So little remains here now, a few pieces of tin from the house roofs, a few broken bottles and that is pretty much it. The cache was easily found still under the wheel, we couldn't believe how the tin was in such excellent condition and everything inside doesn't look like it has ever been wet.
Thanks for bringing us back to this place and showing us what time has done to change it.

Couldn't find the correct driving track to take you straight to it, but a nice easy walk over the railway line and through the bush. Awesome surroundings. Great Fun with Team GO4IT!!!
Nice easy find couple hundred meters off the beaten track, hard to believe there was once a town here, just scrub now. TFTC.
Headed down the road to do this one late yesterday but the road was a bit rough for the van so decided to give it a miss. Parked at the de Grey campsite a bit further down the highway. Mr Beetle decided this morning that he would unload the motorbike and go get this one. He was back in a little over an hour with the deed accomplished. Thanks.
Thanks for the hunt, explorer59.

As there's not much to do in Port Hedland when you have to take a day off (max. 14 days in a row at BHP) I thought I'd nip up and find this one.

We were trying to work out when the last time was that we had been here. we think it was 25 years ago and at the time it was a mining town with lush green lawns. It was an oasis in the middle of no where at the time. The bush is slowly reclaiming it but the road looks like it will be there in 100 years. The walk in was though lots of spinifex and we were in shorts and thongs not perfect footware but we did mange to do it buy carefull foot placement.
The cache is the most unhid but well placed we have seen for some time. Only a geocacher would think of being out here in the middle of an old town site so its very safe from muggles.
We camped nearby just off the access road and found a nice pile of rotting rail sleepers to keep us enbalmed with BTU's for the nights cooking and star gazing. Its a great country when you get away from the other tourists and find your own little place to just sit back and relax. Took -ball added - shrek torch. Thanks for reminding us that places can be revisited.
