Logs
Found - Mrs McMike2012 & I live full-time in our caravan travelling around NZ, visiting the places we want to visit & doing the things we want to do and fitting in a bit of Geocaching here & there we had been staying in Ashburton but headed out to the DoC Campsite at Peel Forest for a bit of a look around we were heading out to check out a couple of walking tracks & decided we should stop here & grab this one this cache ended up being an easy find, log-book wasnt signed as it was soaking wet & we had nothing to replace it with, cache was returned as found were also pleased to add another 'smiley face' to the tally TFTC ... TN:LN:L not S as very wet this was #6,515 for us!
A nice quick find here. Unfortunately the contents were sodden so I couldn't sign the log. TFTC.
The hint was confusing to me but found the cache where I thought it would be. A little the worse for wear with water inside but signable regardless. I remember the tragedy here well. Very sobering now as a grandma. Tftc #10009
A very quick find today after a dnf here ages ago. The log was a bit damp but signable; TFTC
Found with NZDi. We got this one after finishing the Fern Track. There were a few muggles nearby, but no-one was taking any attention to what we were doing. As a matter of fact, it was behind the big rock we thought it was, and I don't know where the other big rock mentioned was. Shortly after finding this we got involved with the search for the missing autistic boy.
It is Easter weekend and it is time to cross off one of the things on our bucket list, which is to visit the Peel Forest area. We headed south from Blenheim yesterday and overnighted in Rangiora in order to break up the trip. That was an uninspiring place to cache with a miserable strike rate. We arrived at the DOC campground well before check-in time but found out the camp custodians were from Blenheim too, and they let us have our site early. After setting up, we did the Kahikatea Track before lunch. After lunch we decided to do the Fern Track walk starting at the Te Wanahu end and heading to Blandswood. We managed to get six of the seven caches, but it seems as though No. 4 has been archived. The track was really muddy so instead of going back the way we came, we decided to return along Blandswood Road. While doing this we got caught up in a Police SAR operation looking for an autistic, non-verbal 11 year old boy who went missing while doing the Dennistoun Loop Track. We ended up supporting the distraught father while the search operation was under way. In the end it was a successful outcome as the boy was found about three hours after going missing.

FITW GreenMenace and VeganScraps on the side
Total of 6 and a half hours, and 17 caches found. Also including one snack stop and a bigger lunch stop at the top. Now back at the carpark. Left this cache as the last for the day and got it just with the last light of the day.
Another hide where I was not sure what the hint was referring to as the GPS pointed to a big rock and the cache was behind the big rock as I expected. Or rather as I was not expecting after reading the hint.

At the end of the Fern Walk for us we stopped to fine you. A beautiful rock deserving of a cache.
Thanks for the cache keewee01.
Thanks for the cache keewee01.
Here with Karma Reprint 8 years ago so now I'm logging it for myself. At the end of the walk to Rata falls and others on a hot day. Tftc
For Show week-end we decided to go to Mount Somers again. We started our day in Mount Peel, and the goal was to go up Little Mount Peel. We arrived quite early at the parking lot, and there was no one around, so we found this cache very easily. Sad memory, but important as we could discuss with our son what flash floods are and what to do. It also reinforces the need to learn to swim and be confident in water! Both container and logbook were in good condition. Thanks for the cache!
We had come to this area in hope of some fine and warm weather after leaving the bottom of the South Island and the rain and cold that we experienced there.
As we arrived in the car park so did the drizzle. And then the rain, so we just stayed in the camper van watching all of the people arrive back to their vehicles. After a couple of hours the weather cleared a little so we leapt out and made a quick find.
Hard to believe there was such a tragedy here with the little creek over from the car park. As we were looking at the creek there were a few small trout in there, we were amazed at how clear they were.
Thanks for placing the cache and thank you for the smiley

Cache was a fairly quick find and then we tried to find plaque to flood victims. Was hidden by a camper van but I was able to get photos.
In the area checking out the notice boards for the walking tracks so we can decide what we are doing for the next few days. Packed right in front of the memorial rock and once the way was clear made our way to the cache for a quick find. tftc
First cache of the day. It was easy to find. Thanks for the hide. Beatiful nature area here! Thanks for placing a cache in this location!
Quick easy find with not a muggle in sight. Never before in my life had I seen a wood pigeon fly directly to the sky and then dive bomb. Must have been a kamikaze variety. Fortunately not at us
There were too many muggles around before going for my walk but except from a woman lying in a car with her legs hanging out the window I had the place to myself when I got back. Quick find if you ignore the hint. Thanks keewee

Lot of people about walking. Got this after a walk to rata falls and Emily falls.
#15414. It's taken a while, but we've finally made it to the start of the Emily and Rata Falls tracks. Took us a little while to track this down (the hint was probably more hinderance than help). TFTC.
The forecast for today wasn't great, so StreetWalker and I decided to head to Mt Peel Forest to try and find the last of our unfound alphanumeric puzzles that were solved quite some ago, as well as carry on up the Mesopotamia road to see if we could score a couple of FTFs.
I should have ignored the hint and gone straight to where I thought the cache was hidden. Lots of cars parked here today and the tracks to both the Emily and Rata falls were busy. TFTC.

Walked past it in the beginning but we didnt have cellphone coverage at that point. But we quickly went there again after the fern walk and found it easily
Funny, the cached was exactly where we thought it would be - no need to look for another big stone. ReCached found it quickly. TFTC keewee01!

Simple find, just had to wait for muggles to finish their lunch at the picnic table. Then got busted by another muggle as I replaced the cache. Just smile, say gidday and leave the area.
Out for a look around Peel Forest today with my old caching parnter and daughter, Caitlin and her friend Helen, located the cache quickly. TFTC.
On my way from Geraldine to Methven. Everybody told me to visit Peel Forest, so I did. After finding 3 of the caches of the trail, I walked back. Sitting in my car I remembered that I saw cache near the parking earlier on. After a group of Muggles started walking the trail, I went to GZ, where the cache was found quickly. Thanks for hiding!
This afternoon we had gone further up Allans Track than was sensible under the present weather conditions. After having got safely back out we came to do this cache, to give us a reminder of the dangers of the area. Took us a short while to locate the correct hint item and the cache. Thanks for showing us this.
This easy a lovely glade l think with a shelter and great swimming before the flood. We use to visit friend who lived in the area. Shame for the families that lost loved ones here. TFTH
My mission is my first 3 day tramp on Stewart Island. The Seagnoid has Xmas off so we are off on an epic adventure with Zara around the South Island. The Seagnoid is navigator and scribe, Zara and I have teamed up and Im cache logger. Day 6 - Wednesday - Ashburton to Tekapo today.
Sadly the end of the walk and back by the road. Lots of tracks here - have to come back to explore some more. Cache snagged and tagged. Cheers

TaybeeDragon and I are off for a three day walk on Stewart Island. But we have a camper, so once you add in getting there and back, it's a three week trip. Day 6: Ashburton to Tekapo.
End of the walk, we're turning this into a loop and taking the road back. Hope that is not going to be too much of a mistake, it's pretty hot out. These side tracks look interesting. Should make some wonderful tramping. The road here is wildly inaccurate on the map, so I plotted it out and have just now (as I write this log up about 20 days later) edit the map to suit.

Stopped here this morning before heading off on foot up the track and the cache was only 14 metres away. Missed it on the first pass, found it a few minutes later on the second. What a tragic event! Signed log, TFTC
Well THE stone appeared to be THE stone in my case out on a caching adventure with team_macdonald TFTC
Well I had tried this once before with no luck but the not the big rock, was the big rock that we needed. Tftc.
Went to the summit of Little Mount Peel today. Amazing hiking area around here. Thanks for the cache!
Cache 27 of 27 today.
We went out for a bit of a drive on a cloudy/rainy day to give Al some new things to photograph. Plenty of Roads travelled that we would usually drive straight past.
Hunted around for a long time for this one, tried the rock we didn't think it was under, tried the rock we thought it would be under, still no luck. Slipped in the mud, got spiked by trees and had lost all remains of sunlight. Didn't really want to give up after 26 finds but I wasn't enjoying myself anymore and needed to start the drive back to Christchurch so Master 3 wouldn't be too tired for preschool tomorrow. Quick detour into Geraldine for some fish and chips and then off home to spend a few hours logging our days adventures. Will have to try this one another day when we have a bit more time, patience and light.

Found prior to a walk through the Fern Walk. Hint threw me off a wee bit but made the find. TFTC.
Hubby and I decided to try out our new tent at Peel Forest. While there I couldn't NOT find some of the many caches in the area. Once we figured out which rock to look at we soon had the cache. What a sad story about the children. TFTC
#2,237: Rocky Smiley!
Out for a grand day with Team_Gaters and TheWanglers, picking up the caches on the loop in the forest. Got this one after we were back at the car. All in good shape!

Found with my grandson aged 3. Well remember this terrible tragedy. No chance of flooding today - everything very dry.
Out on a walk with Mike and Millie. Cachsense let me down today - downloaded all the cache descriptions before leaving home as I knew data coverage was patchy here, but once we started on the walk the app wouldn't show the cache descriptions (or hints) and with sometimes vague GPS, this made this series a bit more of a challenge. Very enjoyable walk though. TFTC!
Day 1 of our 5 Day end of year geocaching trip. The carpark was full when we started off on our walk through Allans Track so we decided to grab this on the way out. It took as MUCH longer than we anticipated so the carpark was empty when we came back. Thanks for the cache

Sad to know the history at this spot. Water safety is such a big thing these days. thanks for commemorating the spot. TFTC
I vaugely remember that incident, so sad.
Nice easy to find cache in the obvious spot.
It was pretty damp inside so we dried it as best we could.
Cheers and thanks,
S.t.

What a tragic incident. Made my heart ache to think of those poor families and the children. Thanks for taking us near the memorial. TFTC.
At the 'cemetery with no name' cache justanurse spotted the grave of three of the children. Nasty incident.
We remembered that very sad incident. We had just left the district a few years before. Anyway a good find a respectful distance away. Cache all warm and dry. Thank you.
Staying in Geraldine for a couple days for a wee family Easter holiday. After all the recent rain we woke to a semi decent day...so headed out for a drive with a wee walk in mind. Bit of sunshine as we pulled up & donned our 'tramping boots' in prelude to heading up one of the tracks. Made the quick find and sign of this before heading out. Cheers.

Spotted this trail a wee while back, and thought wow! That looks like awesome fun!! So a plan was made.
Decided that Waitangi day was a good enough occasion, esp with the event on, and so we headed here for a wonder!!
Had fun going round, getting a good hike in, and finding tons of caches with La Vista and Bald Ed who we bumped into by chance. And later my mum, brothers, and some of their friends!! Busy trails here! Cachers and non!
After doing the trails, we came back, and did the carpark cache
Consec caching day # 459
