Found this while in the area getting the new TMGT caches 7 years since it was last found wow.
As this cache has been out of action for too long, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. Disabled for a year, CO hasn't logged in over that same period, might be time to let this one go.
Lucy and I gave this an attempt but had no luck even with the first coordinates, how sure wht I'm looking for! This needs looking at. There was an information board down the way that has been missing for a few months. There was another information board down the back that we tried to extract two sets of numbers from and still had no luck. Can this please be checked on? It's already had to have the final replaced by someone else other than the CO.
The HOAC planned a trip today to get several outstanding hard caches in BOP. On the way back we stopped here, completed the puzzel, and worked out where the final resting place was to be. One of our members confirmed it was the right location from a previous visit. Cats & Dragons replaced the cache for future visitors over summer. And now its time for us to head back to Hamilton
Heading out for a day with caching mates (HKCB and RWIMF) for another epic early start to the day, did I say early start to the day (being 2am leaving Hamilton).
All in all it was a fantastic day which took us all to countryside that we had not really visited before clocking up 900 kms in 14 hours and 20 caches. Also meant that I was able to complete the final requirement for the DGSc Challenge that I had set myself as this was the final elective. Now all I have to do is work out when and how to make it to Reefton to collect the final. This single challenge has taken me 18mths to complete and required getting 2525 caches (and thats not including all the previous caches that I had to locate just to qualify to begin this particular challenge.
This was the twentith cache of what was to be an epic day. The mission of the day was to collect the remaining D=2.5 T=2.5 (minimium DT Rating Allowed) that I needed to collect for the above mentioned challenge. Together we signed the caches as "HOAC" to save log space.
Well with the first part of the morning completed, and a quick trip into Gisborne for the CANZ cache and more petrol we were back to it searching for a few more caches but heading back towards home by this time. Last cache of the day before the retrun home. We noted before we arrived the previous DNF's so armed with a previous finder and a replacement cache (cache is now a 500m plastic jar sitting tucked in behind) we worked the coordinates and left the cache for those other cachers over the summer period.
So for the start of a great day, thank you, and for the placement Thank you.

Got to 3rd stage, got coordinates, thunderstorm happened before I got a chance to look for final stage. Will be back soon.
Like others, we got as far as Step 2 and drew a blank. Looks like the area is suffering from some winter tree and leaf fall but we checked about and couldn't find anything.
We're visiting from Florida, USA. That was great fun but no luck today. Searched high and low but could not find stage two. Sigh. Thanks for placing the cache.
We're visiting from Florida, USA. Took a guess at the next sign, did the math but still no luck. Tried another sign but the math didn't work.
We found #1 with no problems but the area around #2 are is is bad shape after the winter weather we have had here. Lots of fallen debris and some trees. So we could not find it. Maybe putting a clue to the third or final point or the coordinates would be appropriate now.
Wow, that was frustrating. Great spot to take the teens who had a ball playing in the long grass but highly frustrating not being able to figure out the final. As with the others we didn't know whether we had the final co-ords correct or not so it became a bit of a needle in a haystack find attempt. We particularly didn't like that we were bush bashing aimlessly in what could be a regenerating forest or nesting place for wildlife. Perhaps a geochecker for the final co-ords would at least let cachers know they're in the right spot.
This turned out to be an unexpected mini hike covering quite an expansive pa site. The multi flowed very well, though there were some curve balls along the way.
Waypoint 1: There is a set of 6 numbers on the back, which I mistook as the seconds... Ended up with a pin drop just off the beach at Ohope. Fortunately, the right coords were soon found, and we were on our way.
Waypoint 2: Bang on coords for me. Love the clue...
Waypoint 3: This was a bit troublesome. Didn't know if we had to count words in the title; there was alpha-numeric text, and a hyphenated word. Just did what I thought was right and got a final coord. The search began...
Final: Found at least three very impressive trees. Any of these would be worthy hosts. The cache was nicely hidden... looked like a stone in its camo coat. An enjoyable ramble on the verge of nightfall. TFTC.

Well put together multi. Had alot of fun with Angken finding this one. No troubles for the first two WP's. Had a little trouble with our counting skills on the third WP, but got some numbers that made some sense.
A bit of a search needed at GZ, but spoted the cache after a few minutes.
Thanks for this great multi. Left TB.

Great find.
Took girlfriend out for her first cache and she is now hooked.
The second clue however need to be redone as the print is coming off was just readable.
Thanks again great views

Found all locations, really liked the ways the co-ords were hidden. Took extended family and friends on this one and got them all hooked. TFTC
Great fun, took a second visit to find it. Found all the clues. Sneaky hints, do the geriatric hippies write cryptic crosswords ? The 2nd clue needs a repaint as its a little hard to read. The children enjoyed running around the hills. Sensational views and sense of history from the plaques. Cool fun.
Lovely spot, and unlike others we were able to get waypoint 2- We were about to give up on it and then literally stepped right on it! So that was good- and we were feeling encouraged. WP3 info had some potential ambiguity but we got some numbers out of it, but then trying to find the final was just too hard. We gave it 30 minutes or so of hunting but with no useful clue (to confirm we were in the right locale) and a full bush setting it was all a bit of a lost cause really. Pity- great location so a find would have been nice.
No luck with WP2 either, but made some general deductions, and did a bit of walking and eventually came up with the pot of gold - cache a little damp
With NZ Biscuit - yes side stepped WP2 - could not find it all good in the end TFTC
Very hot place for a enjoyable walk to see the views. Missed part 2 but worked out number 3. Nice spot.
Very interesting site. WP2 very strange co-ords, plus container cracked. Had to guess where WP3 was, then was able to locate the final with no problem. Great visit though. TFTC
Suggest a bit of maintenance on WP2 in order so people can have success as this is a great area.
Having attempted this cache numerous times in the past I was pleased to finally lay this one to rest. Quick find at the final. TFTC
Followed all the instructions and managed to get co-ords to what we are pretty sure was the final cache point. We looked and looked and after 40 mins decided to give up, hopefully we can try again next time we are in town.
What a mission! Found on our 2nd visit. To be honest about it, we never found the waypoints . Did the maths off a likely sign, and hey bingo , 2nd time around the GPS led us to it - we struck it lucky. Really nice place to visit, had it to ourselves both times.
Nice area - even at night. WP1 no problem, spent ages on WP2 and gave up, tried a couple of locations for WP3 and found likely location for final. Longish search there. TFTC
Didn't take long this time. Was obvious really. Lovely spot today with the sun shining, the kids found some nice trees to climb.
I don't think we quite got the last set of coordinates right and the kids were getting scratchy, but we have the rest of the week to find it so we are not letting it beat us.
Don't know what all the fuss is about....easy find once we got the final co-ords, Ymana had spent a little time on the hill without success, so called upon a warped mind for help, with the addition of a hint or two from one that had succeeded earlier...wp2 clue easy to spot, as for wp2, it was found from hints off previous logs, but I'm still yet to fathom what the numbers in it mean...did some maths and maybe a little addition goes the rights way for 1, but certainly goes west for the other...but as the listing says, slow down and have a picnic (if you don't you'll be out to lunch)...read the listing forget about wp 2 there is a 33% chance you'll read the right words first time, so after two fouls you're in.
Yeah agree with Ruruwha re once we got the last co-ords things were very easy - it's the other parts that are the problem.
Thanks to Geoff for his support and Ruruwha for his company for the second go at this cache.
If you are from out of town and dont have time to do a couple of visits or track some one down who can help with suggestions I would suggest you contact geriatic hippies first and ask them how to use the numbers that you find at WP 2 - still dont know what we were suppose to do with them. !!
Anyway lovely morning out kayaking and caching. Take a look at Ruruwha's multi that we set this morning - "O here we are ! "- you need a kayak but it wont take you as long as this one.

Grrrr Very frustrating couple of hrs spent here (lovely place thou) checking, counting, rechecking, recounting words on the signage and searching an area where I found heaps of possible hiding places but no cache and didn't see the monkey thing!
Have read all the entries below and still confused - not sure if i'm looking for four different stages or two ??

At last! We found out that the map on our device was showing us the part of the walking track closest to the gps location, not the actual location . No wonder we had so much trouble! With a little support and a peek at google maps we were back in the game!
We started to look as dusk was coming on. Then as we were walking out we saw Ruru in the trees, right by the track.

Found it at last!!!!!! instructions where as clear as mud, but found it at last, the cache is a few meters away from its ment to be.
Great spot. No luck for us. Couldn't work out what the second coords were. We think we worked out last one which took us to a big tree below last pa. searched for long time but came up with nothing. good fun day though.
along hot walk in the scalding sun with "barelfullofmonkeys"scratching our heads wondering where we had gone wrong? had we forgotten to write a part of the clue down? had we looked at the wrong board? were we insane for still trying to work out this crazy riddle of a clue after an hour out in the afternoon sun? we think that maybe the instructions need to be made a little less riddle like...
This was a weird one that only persistence paid off. After the clue at WP1 left us in limbo we eventually located a sign with a 78th word of appropriate length and so located the final. I guess the point was to make us explore this site and read all signage well. Good views.
Joined my nephews for this one.... they've had a couple of goes, but as a team we got there!!!!
Had my girls so made a couple of small swaps.
The final waypoint wasn't spot on.... or our GPS was telling lies!
Cheers

It took us five trys to to get this cache really complicated but we got it and it was wirth it. Nice cache location third cache third cache I have ever done so I fell good about finaly getting one of the harder ones.
After a couple of DNF.s checked cache tonight. Still safe in its hiding place. see my cache notes further down.

Went to visit to check date of last visit, but it`s not in the same place??? Have looked it up here now, so looks like we will re-hunt, thats fine, it is a nice spot.
started last evening but gave up after some time (like most others no sign of stage 2?) This morning a fresh look at the two possible sources of data for WP3. Had to decide how to treat headingsand hyphenated words but got close enough in the end. A really impressive piece of history...thanks
Got it. Yeah! I couldn't find stage but stage 3 was a good guess. TFTC MacBanger
Found with the assistance of geckoh on a beautiful sunny evening. After spending all my life in Whakatane, I never knew this Pa site was here! TFTC
OH MI GOD this was soooo confusing! Even looking back at the clue doesn't help. It was only that we started with 15 people (ended with 3!) that we had enough input.
Anyway, nice hide.

Having now read through all the logs, which we didn't do yesterday, I have to let you know that the funny monkey thing was put there 2 years ago by kiwinwpb and bucknga but they didn't have a GPS, so couldn't set co-ords. It was called Jeremy, and had lots of little Jeremy's inside. The first attempt at setting their own cache, which failed!!

Found it during a visit to Whakatane for my brothers 40th. Weird one but we found it.
Had a brainwave about the wp2 info and was proven correct. Problem was we had got to this point yesterday. Rechecked the counting, correct, then noticed a transcription error from the cache page to the GPSr, it happens when you are reading a two inch square screen and trying to save the forrests. Quick find after that.

1st of three DNF's for us today, not a good day. Found wp1 quickly, wp2 after a short search but couldn't figure out what to do with the clue. Thought we could carry on though and found two spots that yeilded results, but couldn't find any logical way to the suggested GZ's.
.This one has been a real mission, as it was the very first cache that I had tried to find, over a year ago. Have been back on and off for more attempts. This definitely a 4 stage cache, but WP2 seems to have gone walkabout

At WP1 there is actually a set of written co-ords attached to the object. You don't work out any puzzle at this stage. This set of co-ords led to WP2 where we could not find anything. There was supposed to be a clue at WP2 (see note Jan 9, 2008 by Geriatric Hippies) but we bypassed that clue and went looking for WP3. That is where you work out the puzzle, ...from the words found on WP3.
To help with the confusion, or add more......
Don't use either of the parking co-ords unless you have a submarine or fancy a loooooong walk from in the hills behind Opotiki.
WP1 does give the co-ords to WP2 but we never found anything at WP2.
So don't give up yet...., go and find WP3. Read your cache notes and you'll see that its obvious what you're looking for, something with letters on it. We moved on to WP3 which we found by trial and error. Work out the puzzle and that will give you the co-ords to the cache.
It is a 4 part cache but we have no idea what WP2 looks like.
Hope this clears up the confusion.
P.S.And we didn't see any monkey either.

This is my second attempt at this one. Found WP1 easily and that was it. Searched for WP2 for quite a while and in the end gave up. Maybe cache owner could check that the WP's exist.
Off to a good start - found the first one and then no more luck - could not find 2nd waypoint despite an hour or so of searching. Had a general look around and enjoyed the history and the views but gave up on the geocaching. If it's still there we would be happy to have a clue or two!!!!
AT LONG LAST 3rd attempt!!! We used all our geocaching know how to find this one!! I am thinking there is something amiss with this cache, maybe missing a waypoint?? we got the co-ords off the sign and searched for ages. Breannah found the monkey that has been mentioned in previous logs, but we had all but given up, till we walked on to search for possible hiding spots in the area. Cache was found approx 53m from the co-ords. Can the Geriatric Hippies or Punga and Paua confirm whether after working out the co-ordinates off the sign that there is another waypoint to find or is that supposed to get you to the final cache? We were confused with the 4 stage multicache in the description as we only found 3 stages.
Cache was in excellent condition.
Rescued plastic bug, condemned nothing. TFTC!!!

We were unable to locate the cache, even returning a second time the same day to try again. Thought we had followed the clues correctly but our co-ordinates lead us to an overgrown portion of grass that yielded nothing but blackberry prickles. Could the Geriatric Hippies please check that the cache is still in the area where placed. Look forward to returning to try again!
My gosh, We're surprised anyone gets anywhere near the cache with those Parking Co-ords!!!!! One set, S37 07.555 E177 25.265, is out in the middle of the ocean and the other set, S38 07.555 E177 25.265, is up some remote valley behind Opotiki, possibly in Barry Crump country!!???????? A very long walk or a very very long swim!! Congratulations to Noraa1 for managing to find it!! Did you do the very long swim or the very long walk?
We did it!!! Find # 38. 1st clue easy. 2nd clue obviously easier to find than it was before. 3rd clue not as far as we thought. Once found we had to agree on what words were to be used for the different numbers.(There was 3 of us counting the words, this made for interesting variations / answers - especially from the one who just achieved NCEA level 1 Maths)
Tried to shortcut but not really an option so looked for a possible path. Needed to finish before it got dark so the pressure was on. Within 5 - 10 minutes had cache in our hands and we were jumping for joy.
Decided Avigecko has had a long enough rest and that it was time to move him on.

Due to recent no finds, I have checked all stages of this cache today. All is fine, including the cache itself, although stage 2 was somewhat less obvious than originally intended. I have therefore moved it to a more prominent position, remaining at the same coordinates you would have obtained at stage 1. The cache itself remains where it was originally placed and considering it has been found, it is not impossible!! Once again, I have made it a little easier to see today. There are signs of people being in the correct location, so at least one hunter has come very close! Hope this helps to complete a sucessful hunt. Cheers Geriatric Hippies
This one has really got me beat. Nearest one to home, and I have given it several attempts, and tried a few combinations. found the monkey too. Couple of coordinate combinations had me in the scrub to the south and to the east. Maybe someone else will have some luck....
Been there twice and couldn't find this cache anywhere. We did find something though which we first though was the cache - a weird monkey thing next to a tree near the co-ordinates given for the third part of the cache It was up on the hill part area. Not sure what it was but it looked really weird. Forgot the camera.
Anyway have given up on this one. Maybe geriatric hippies can point us in the right direction or check the co-ordinates. considering 1 person out of 6 have found it.
Cheers anyway and thanks for the lovely climb - twice

Nice place! The 1st clue was easy to findbut then we ended up at the same patch of grass as the others, and could not find any clue for stage three. We took a guess and calculated final stage from the last board, but that end's up in the scrub. Decided to enjoy the view and leave the cache for what it is.
came up to do his 1 but we were driven away by the pouring rain, will have to have another go one day soon.
i think we were close, but not worth it with the rain.

FTF FTF FTF!! Yay!! We just can't believe our luck. Spotted this one a few weeks back but never thought we'd get here in time to be first.
A fast climb and a quick hunt, No 1 was easy, No 2 was anybody's guess, hunted there for ages with no idea what we were looking for and cut a finger, enthusiasm waned so we gave up and moved on, a bit of guesswork and careful calculating and bingo first time! A good hiding spot.

11.00am. Had another go at this today before we left the area. Made a little progress - very little !! Rang the geriatic hippy to ascertain that he was a lot more complex and devious than we had given him credit for. Found the stage one directions this time but could not locate stage two - searched for a good hour where the gps took us which was just a couple of metres off the mowen area but found nothing unusual or helpful in any way. Having failed at this approach we tried the conversion of words into numbers off all the other signs we could find but drew a blank from this approach. One set of derived co-ordinates took us out to sea (thats how we felt too!) and the other deep into the scrub. Not knowing whether to count the heading words confused the situation as well. So thats us done for now. By the way, we suggest the carpark co-ordinates should change (perhaps to S37 58.664 E177 04.242) to avoid many days walk!!.

4.00pm. This one got the better of us today. We climbed up to the Pa site and to the designated spot. Nearby was a likely source for the information needed for the co-ordinates for GZ. Did the counting and calculating and armed with the co-ordinates set off again to another part of the Pa site. Our gps brought us to a grassed patch with an accuracy of 4m.. Several likely hiding spots within about a 10m. radius of this point were explored in detail to no avail. Did find a coconut carved as a monkey head with beads inside - probably used in some wide game or orienteering but not in geocaching!! Then the drizzle turned into rain so we gave up. Cannot stop wondering!!
