Found on our way to Hobart with a few detours along the way through Jericho, Clifton and out to Chauncy Vale Reserve after camping out at Oatlands for the night. Thanks for the nice walk and cache gorbak!

10-Jul-24
Today we left Hobart again this time to head north towards Launnie for our next house sit which starts beginning of August. So its going to be a leisurely drive. We decided to camp here in the Moho and do a couple of the walks. Whilst the weather wasnt as good as previous days we were still super lucky and it didnt rain. Loved the loop walk and wombat walk. Quick easy find, such a shame that the original log book went walkies. Thanks to the caching community for keeping this one going, always good to find a golden oldie. TFTC

Big thanks to gorbak for creating this cache! Your effort brought an extra spark of excitement to our geocaching quest. This discovery was find number 1,200 for us, marking another memorable moment in our adventure. Living and traveling full-time across Australia in our Coaster Bus, we're always on the lookout for caches to uncover. To see more of our travels, feel free to follow our journey HERE...

Thanks gorbak for hiding this cache, I needed a find for today to update my calendar and find streak. This is my find #1531 at 09:26 on 28/4/2024. Thanks Whitewebbs for the replacement log.

Found it! FLTF.

We found this one initially 3 years ago. Back up this way and decided to check it out. Found and in good condition. Good job on the replacement!

01-Jan-24
We have never visited this reserve before so were pleasantly surprised. The council is doing a good job with the upkeep. Mr W made the trek up and up to find the cache but it was missing. After replacing another cache in the area Mr W walked back up and up to GZ and replaced as per hint. We did email the CO to let him know but have had no response. It would be a shame to see such an old cache disappear. TFTC

TYFTC - I have replace the snap lock bag too!

09-Jun-23
If someone reads this before heading to GZ, please take a sandwich size ziplock bag to help preserve the original logbook - certainly some good reading there.

08-Jun-23
Today, wanting a find - or more, but let's not be greedy - and with time on my side, I headed to Chauncy Vale. After parking, I realised I'd lost reception, so backtracked down the road a bit until I was able to download the two local caches, then returned to park and pay.
I enjoyed my walk up to the caves, guessing it's about 30 to 35 years I was last here.
I had the place (possibly the whole reserve) to myself apart from the wildlife! Loved the serenity here.
A nice quick find thanks to the generous hint.
All's well at GZ although the original logbook could do with a new ziplock bag to help preserve it - certainly some good reading there.
Then I continued on and completed the circuit walk back alongside the creek.

A favourite.

Thanks gorbak, for this caching experience, and for bringing me back here.
Cheers, EPs.

What a special area! Absolutely loved it, we stayed the night in the camper, being the only ones there. Thanks so much for taking us here!

24-Apr-22
What a lovely location, it's a wonder I've never been here, let alone knew it existed! a large area to explore, lots of wallabies, no wombats sadly! Thanks for taking me here.

Hello gorbak thank you for the cache

Today was supposed to be a terrible day so I didn't go walking, but as the day cleared up I thought I would go for a shorter walk to find a couple of caches here. I have been here before but can't remember if it was for a cache or just a walk.

It didn't take too long to find your cache after reading the hint.

Wonderful experience here. We have never been here before (not sure why) and were surprised by such a very unique and large area. The walk to the cache was amazing and the cache was a good hide .. and found! The information provided was so interesting and we are looking forward to returning to explore more.

08-Jul-20
wow what a find and what a cave, TFTC one cacher at a time, i noticed the container lid was cracked and brittle so having Lil Rafa in the car looking after the GSP I said to take a new container and replace the original container, as she did. a pleasant walk to this GZ was interrupted by passing a huge cave, a warm couple of hours made for some nice views and hot and sweaty conditions while walking but that was ok. A GPS for accurate tracking and a mobile phone for the hint and the find was found signed and re hid ready for the next searcher.

Thanks for this great cache Gorbak.
Today, RLD4963 and I were in the area, so of course we wanted to have a look for this cache. I can remember reading one of Nan Chauncy's books in primary school, and I'm sure there was a school excursion as well that I missed out on. As a result, I've always wanted to visit this little reserve, and goodness knows why I haven't been here before.
Today, thanks to geocaching, I finally visited this gorgeous area and got to see these caves - thank you so much for placing a cache here.
RLD4963 and I had to do a bit of a shuffle as we had the GeoGSP with us, so whilst one waited in the car at the entrance with the GeoGSP, the other headed off to find this and another cache nearby.
RLD4963 went first and when he got back to the car, he mentioned that the container for this cache was brittle and had a cracked lid. All the contents were dry. As we had a spare largish sistema in the car, I took the replacement container up and emptied the contents into the new container. So all the contents and the original logbook are still there, and all are in good nick, just the container has been replaced.
This one gets a favourite from me for finally bringing me to a great location.

11-Mar-20
Second attempt to find this one, last try ran out of time & phone was about to go flat.
Container has become brittle & cracked.
Have visited the sanctuary many times, but didn't know the cache was here.
Enjoyed the find.
TFTC!

We've been meaning to come here for a while and today we decided to visit the area. We did the Caves Loop and enjoyed exploring the caves near to GZ. The caves provided some nice cool shade on what turned out to be a very warm day. We'll certainly be back to explore more of the place. TFTC!

Nice place. Caves are awesome too

Late log, found this on Anzac Day.
Headed out for this cache as i knew it came with a very nice view & cave to match. The weather looked iffy most of the drive but then out of nowhere it became the nicest day, sunny, warm it was perfect.
Stupid us forgot to get the co ords before getting there only to realise we had no reception but we decided even if we couldn’t get a cache today the caves were enough for us to keep walking. Close to cave we hear our phones beep with notifications and suddenly we had reception and could find this it was 80m away and an easy find thankgod. Loved this area so thankyou for bringing it to our attention via geocaching gets a favourite from me ️

I've been to these caves at leadt 100 times over the last 40 years. Thanks for the cache.

28-Oct-17
This cache is another one of those that have sat smirting at us on the map for far too long. Every time we drove through Bagdad I could almost hear it laughing at me, along with that damn question mark not far away. Well no longer!
After finally qualifying for the Old School Challenge last Sunday today was the first opportunity for me (and stainless-steel-rat) to come and collect that reward. We could have turned on our heels and left, saving this for another day- yeah right, as if! Besides I'd chucked a fiver in the honesty box so we need to get our moneys worth.
At one stage it looked like rain but the sun came out and absolutely baked us as we made the climb to GZ. The last time I was up here I was in primary school (so close to forty years ago) so I didn't remember much but I knew there was a cave. Wow! That didn't disappoint. The cache was found easily due to the generous hint and after a bit of a look around, we headed back to the car.
A great morning out, thanks gorbak.

12-Apr-17
I had planned to take TeenCyclist for a walk in the SW, but the cloud looked too thick for good views, so I went for this instead.
Sitting at the beautiful caves we sat in silence and listened to all sorts of gorgeous birdsong before heading down to the valley floor and returning via the creek.
Thanks - very enjoyable.
The logbook had obviously been wet in the past, but was dry today,

03-Jul-16
Kids found this whilst on a walk with their cub group.
Unfortunately the container has gotten wet and log book can't be written in. We didn't have anything to replace it.
Great location

"I found a cache too!"
First day in Tasmania on a 10-day sight-seeing trip, enjoying the scenery and natural beauty.
I had decided to take the scenic route from Launceston to Hobart, but with so much snow and ice around the Great Lakes area I started to wonder if I was going to make it in my 2WD SUV. Fortunately by this stage there was no more snow and the going was easier.
It was getting dark, but with all the driving earlier in the day I hadn't been on a hike yet. So this was it, and I chose the right one Big Grin. I like steep hikes, and this had it. The caves were awesome. And at dusk I saw many wallabies and a wombat that wasn't too keen to get off the path.
In the end it was 3km in 30 minutes, with a 100m elevation. This cache was a definite highlight - a FP from me!
Thanks gorbak and the other Tassie COs who made the 2500km trip so memorable Smile.

Qualified and located the local challenge cache so continued on to this one. Very interesting area, some good views, great bush and very impressive erosion features. Cache in good order despite the infrequent visits.

A nice afternoon walk in the summer sun, possibly should have had some lunch to sustain myself for the uphill climb. Perhaps the day was too hot for the wildlife to come out, i only saw some lizards and so e ladybugs. I heard lots of birds, including the ever laughing kookaburras. I am a bit of a fan of Nan Chauncy although i have never read any of the books. Nan started the Claremont Guide movement which occupied so much of my childhood. There was even one time i met Eve Masterman (Nans sister) and interviewed her for the history of the unit, which was one part of my Queens Guide Award. On the way out we thought we would just have a look around the house, as we were walking up to it we met the grounds person. She let usin the house and showed us all around. The place is in great condition, with history all around. Thanks for bringing me here.

Found the cache in a walk with Mt Stuart Scout Group. Lots of groovy things inside!

18-Sep-13
I have been meaning to come up here for ages and today I had the opportunity and the motivation. I dropped my grandson at school and then went on to Chauncyvale. It was raining lightly but steadily so I walked up with raincoat on but should have also had waterproof boots because there was a lot of water running on the track. After a short while I reached the caves and was most impressed. I didn't read many books when I was at primary school but "They Found a Cave" is one I remember and the movie sticks in my mind as well. It's a beautiful area which I will return to for more walks. A most fitting area and cache for my 600th. Thanks, Gorbak.

Found on our way back from Strathgordon.

We had the time today to detour off the highway and find this cache. The day was perfect for a walk in the bush and we enjoyed the peaceful location and the caves. Thanks for bringing us here as without geocaching we would never have know this sanctuary was here. TFTC

Have had my eye on this one for a while. So today we scuried off with the geofamily. Yet anouther spot i would never have known about if not for geocaching.Took travel bug. Thanks heaps for this cache. Thinking the geokids will sleep well tonight

Collected this one whilst on a bushwalk to Butlers Hill. We ascended to the top of the cliffs from the Chauncey Vale car park and wound our way along the tops until an old logging track was reached. This was followed for a while then a steep climb to another and finally up to Butlers Hill. On return we came down at a gully and were able to walk under the upper cliffs for a considerable distance. This was quite fascinating with many overhangs and caves, masses of what we though were Devil scats and several spots with the white from bird droppings from the cliffs above. As we got closer to the GZ the GPS indicated it was directly below us so this necessitated continuing along on the level we were on until a way could be found to get onto the walking track past the cache cave. Awesome
Sensational
Terrific

What a great cache it has it all. History, bush walk, views and a large cache. Geo kid e and geo kid o went for a wander through history, and a great bushland setting. Before finding this cache I spent some time looking up the history of the area. I didn't know of the author at all, but we had a bit of a discussion over the dinner take about her life and books.

Took some photos of the kids in caves which I will post later.

Tftc gorbak. Really worth while

I think I wrote gc cache number 2100 in the log book, but it turns out to be 2099. One more for the milestone.

18-Feb-12
Great walk. Caves are fantastic. Very tough going if you leave the track which happens easily at the moment since it was very overgrown. Forgot gps and had to use iPhone. No signal meant no hint, and so no find! I'm sure the cache is there we just didn't find it. Loved seeing the caves though.

31-Jan-12
Awesome! Thought I would quickly pop in here and grab this cache. Stayed for ages just admiring the wonderful views, awesome caves and absolute serenity of the place. TFTC

Quite a warm day today and I didn't feel like doing much walking but I thought a loop around the bluffs wasn't too far. Found the cache quickly. All was in good order inside.

Hi Gorbak
Needed a good walk today after a morning in Oatlands.
Firstly, thanks for taking me to somewhere new for me as I was not aware this Sanctuary existed.
Secondly for a great walk; I took the circuit route, and allowing me to count four wallaroos on the way to the caves. Love those hoppers as they flee quickly, stop look you up and down whilst deciding if it's time for flight or fight. Thay are just majestic creatures.
Got to the bridge and went cross country from there, which made the trip in a little more exciting. Followed the tracks all the way out.
A quick find at GZ saw me sign the log at 1447hrs.
On the way out I stopped at the cairn and noticed the names of a couple of old friends (Yes, OLDER than me) listed there.
Walking back alond side a singing creek and bubbling waters was quietly pleasant. Really enjoyed this one.
If you are as good at your vocation as you are at setting caches, I'd enjoy that tutorage as well.
Thanks for the cache, the walk and the associated history lessons.
Cheers OldSaint.
PS Let me know when you want the other info please.

As usual, it is a delight to discover new areas while in search of a cache! It was a lovely walk to the caves and I look forward to returning to explore the rest of the area! TFTC!

What a lovely area. Don't live too far away from this area and never knew it existed. Thankyou for the walk and the cache.

28-Nov-10
We have often driven past the turn off to this sanctuary but always at a time when it was closed. Today was an exception. As we were going past in the early afternoon, we decided to look for this cache. After parking the car, we set off and we were surprised by the amount of water running off the slopes and out of the rocks. It made section od the track quite muddy and slippery. After about 30 minutes we got near GZ and, after a short time, we located the cache and completed the formalities. It was good to see some of the caves, the subject of the well known childrens' book "They Found A Cave". Thanks for bringing us to this area and for the cache.

20-Oct-10
I have been meaning to do this cache for ages! I adore Nan Chauncy books (grew up on a steady diet of them!) so when I asked my mum if she wanted to go for a drive, and she suggested Chauncy Vale, I enthusiastically grabbed the trusty GPSr and off we went. Saw lots of wildlife - potaroos, wallabies, an echidna and lots of birds (inlcuding a juvenile wedge-tailed eagle close up!) and it wasn't long before we were at Brown's Cave. What a lovely area and view over the valley! We didn't want to leave too soon, so we had a picnic by the creek, and had a wander around various other tracks as well. The find was easy as the coordinates were spot on. TNLN but lovely memories. Thanks for a great cache in a fascinating location!

WELL WELL what a gr8 place for a cache
Headed off from parking area the small gate with the whole tribe in toe.
Not thinking that it would be a LONNNNG HOUR and up hill to GZ (mini cacher only 3 )
was a bit of a slog but made it and what good views and the cave are fantastic.
signed the log and replaced to hiding spot and headed back the way we came because it was easier carry the mini cacher down hill and we wasn't sure how far the loop had to go...

ANYWAY gr8 spot for a cache
you would think more cachers would have done this one
well worth the walk

SL TNLN TFTC ALL WELL AT GZ

WELL DONE

Just wonderful - really worth the visit and a not too long walk. Under an hour. Swapped travel bugs. Cache in excellent condition many thanks for the sensible hint!

21-Mar-09
What caching is all about for us. Going to places we did not know existed or did not know about. Bit hot today to be walking in the open.

07-Mar-09
What a marvellous place. I wouldn't have given the sign on the highway a second glance if there hadn't been a cache here Red Face
But the sanctuary is a really beautiful bit of the Aussie bushland that is rather unique in Tasmania. Such a change to bushwalk through a dry and open eucalypt forest instead of those damp rainforests everyone raves about Big Grin
The rock formations and caves add to the interest and for bird and animal lovers there are plenty of those to be seen too Smile
TFTC and exercise. I left the "Een nieuw begin / A new beginning" Travel Bug.

I have been in to the picnic area before but never any further .
Well worth the walk to the caves for a bit of a poke around and a few photos. The odd thumper around.
Finally got this one off my nagg list. Wasn't really dressed for the climb in 20 plus degrees should of gone in cooler weather..... bring on winter.

A really nice walk this afternoon, with some amazing caves to explore.
Thanks gorbak for this cache. It was a great one and your coords were spot on according to our GPSr’s.

I have looked at this cache a few times always thinking one day I would be close by to do it. Red Tag suggested it for this afternoon so off we set with Rebulus as well. Lovely walk and a very variable weather day to go with it. A great cache to do with mates and there are some good caves up there as well.
Thanks Gorbak

After taking a few pictures in one of the caves, we went off to the cache location. A minute or so later, I had found the cache! Driving out of the Sanctuary, we went off to get dinner. After this we went off to find Current View 1m square (GC13DRM) and head home. I'd have come home without a scratch if I hadn't tried this cache! [B)] TNLN "We Found the Cache!" TFTC, Gorbak

04-Jan-08
Wahoo! At last! This has been on the top of the "to do" list for SO LONG! Finally, with the help of samcarter, and in the company of those intrepid marines, we set of for a ripping yarns adventure into one of the most wonderful, exciting, mysterious, and, dare I say, little known places in southern Tasmania! I was half expecting a bunch of victorian-era schoolgirls to suddenly materialize out of the rocks around us; it has that "Hanging Rock" feel to it! You need to take care at GZ with the little-uns, but don't let this put you off bringing them here; the marines had a blast, and excelled themselves in this great walk and find!

Many may know that Gorbak and I are mates, but all that aside, this is a top place, and a great caching use of a top place! You gotta do this one!

04-Jan-08
You NEED to do this cache. Pick a late afternoon; spring or autumn might be even better than the rather warm summer day we enjoyed today. Then plan to do the whole circuit to the caves and along the creek, picking up the cache along the way. As you do this, keep your eyes and ears alert for the abundant wildlife (we saw wallabies and a bettong/pottoroo/pademelon/whatever (i.e., a smaller-than-a-wallaby marsupial thingy), an eel in the creek, and saw and heard plenty of birds). The views in the valley were wonderful in the late afternoon sunlight, with the leaves of the eucalypts aglow and enough shade to offset the warmth. The caves are impressive, too. My last visit here was when I was a little tacker, and I'm pretty sure we didn't visit the caves (in fact the only thing I remember (and maybe I now only remember the story, and not the event itself) was that one of the donkeys that used to be here brayed loudly and unexpectedly into my grandfather's hearing aid, thus startling him severely Surprised).

Anyway, today's visit was in the company of the two oldest Marines and SG-3, and we pretty much had the place to ourselves. We set off about 4pm, and took our time doing the circuit and taking photos of the kids in the caves. Finding the cache took us a moment or two, but only because of the need for the young Marines to be just a little careful at GZ. After signing the logbook (TNLN), we continued on the circuit, with the Marines in particular feeling a good sense of achievement when we got back to the car. Thanks for placing a cache here Gorbak; it gave us the incentive to have a good visit to a really interesting spot.
