Headed down to Whyalla New Years Eve for a little party with team Mattycat to bring in the new year before a day in the back blocks to kick off the new years 2024, after taking care of the new caches in the conservation park we approached the tower hill area to check out a few of the lower GZ, this was one of themTFTC Maux Faux
[^] [^] Off in the countryside caching with Jack and Purrfect Di. Met up with the froghoppin duo for a New Year cache or six... When I think Monash... I think huge awesome playground... Well I guess this is it for Whyalla, in a 4wd or trailbike... [:o)] Thank you Maux Faux for the cache hide and ongoing care and maintenance ---------------- ----------------------In a dangerous world filled with rusty old mint tins and solid lumps falling from trees - - - a cache a day keeps us agile... sort of --------Caches are logged using the resources of gsak, garmin, and androids, occasionally AI too! (And a little rubber stamp ) Work gets in the way - and some may take longer to log than others due to mixed technology and need for sleep! The skill and talent of some Zenior Zombies helps, and maybe a spot of luck too [:o)]----------Think Covid's over ? Well no, actually... and we don't want your flu, gastro or cold germs either - so practise safe caching please! Ensure Travel Bugs are the Only bugs you share and pass on Clean as you go and cache the countryside Big thanks to those placing quality caches out and about around our country areas, in nice safe places and containers especially! - it keeps our game fun for all Of course we do appreciate if you actually did read all this extra addition to the log word count! There's a challenge somewhere out there, or so we've been told! You win a virtual smiley for the effort and getting to the end of the log Maybe if I worked out where it is I could do it and go back to normal logs again ! If you find the challenge let me know and perhaps we can put an end to these long logs !!! Maybe not though - as someone actually did read to the end and alerted me to just a project GC badge that requires long logs [:o)] Well at least it's not as bad as finding a mint tin! C'est fini... For now... ... until tomorrow! PS:---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------GCA1DNA - Great Leap Forward ... or is it backward... it takes an extra day to get to March 29.2.24 The Mega Leap Event of the year. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------And don't forget to put the June Long Weekend in your diary for 2024 too... fun and funky finds
Travelling with iluvtrekking up the WA coast to Darwin, down the Centre and in the Flinders. After spending some time in Peterbough and Minlaton we moved to Moonta to grab finds in Moonta and surrounds. We didn’t feel like paying the ferryman $450 each to bring our caravans over from Wallaroo so opted to drive to Whyalla. While Mrs ILT and I drove to Lucky Bay to pick up a final, our Geo-men knocked off some of the 4wd caches in Whyalla. A beautiful winters day to be out enjoying this part of the world. Thanks for the hide
Travelling with richlink from Perth to Darwin up along the west coast and home again through the centre and the Nullarbor. We are on the home stretch now, and after a few days on the Yorke, we are at Whyalla before pick-up a few caches. The boys took on the 4WD tracks of Whyalla while the girls headed off to Lucky. We stopped here to claim our smile. TFTC.
TFTC. Sneaky quick day trip to Whyalla on day off work to pick up some caches!

The Non Wangaratta Event Tour 2021!
Covid has postponed the Mega in Victoria until January but leave had been granted for AnyMules to attend with me and Bushfire. So Anymules and I went on a tour to Eyre Peninsular and mid north South Australia instead whilst Bushfire joined us in spirit only as covid meant he couldn't come here either. Not needing anything for my yearly goals I hoped I didn't add too many to the DNFs [B)]
Day 3: Exploring around the outskirts of Whyalla.
There were two ways to get to the cache. The 4WD windy track or the impossible rocky straight over the top at a ridiculous angle way. Of course the ridiculous way was chosen and we bumped up and over the top to GZ. Once there we made a find but the poor cache has seen better days.
Only one of the three goals from last year achieved. So once again trying and fill my calendar with multi-caches and complete loop 11 again this year. [^] For my third goal I will try and get my DNF numbers from over fifty to single digits. That should keep me busy again this year! [:o)]
***Thanks maux faux for putting out this cache and maintaining it for our enjoyment. ***

The cache rot has well and truely set in on this one. No lid and the rest is very soft. I think the camo tape is the only thing holding this one together. It was a good fun (and bumpy) drive in to it.
Thanks for the cache Maux Faux.

Full time nomads since 2014. Still tootling around the country trying to avoid Covid hotspots.
Back in SA for harvest work. Heading to Port Pirie but 4 days ahead of schedule so a quick detour to Whyalla was in order. There sure is a lot of puzzles here! Glad we had done the solving before arriving in town. Rain overnight meant there was some slip sliding happening as we tackled numerous off road tracks and climbs today. Good Fun in the Geo Cruiser [:o)]
This container has a broken lid. Hopefully someone can bring a replacement 1lt container out soon. We took a track further to the East then detoured to GZ so was not difficullt at all.

An interesting little drive in here that the Hilux did with ease. And a quick find once I got to GZ!

Found on a short camping and caching trip north from Adelaide with FeatherWaite.
We slowly made our way up to near Lake Gairdner on the first day, picking up some selected traditional, letterbox and multi caches along the way. We then went across to Hiltaba where we travelled around part of the property, visiting Hiltaba Lookout and Mount St Mungo to find some more caches, including a couple of FTFs, before heading down to near the Gawler Ranges National Park to camp. Then it was off to Whyalla where we targeted a few multis and traditional caches before returning to Adelaide the following day.
Unlike our trip to the south east a fortnight ago, where we were pretty well rained out, we enjoyed reasonable weather with clear skies for most of the time; the only exception being a bit of rain overnight in the Gawler Ranges area.
Most of the caches were found in good condition, although we did have to replace a couple of containers and logbooks.
We were surprised that the last entry in the logbook here was back in May 2017 given that it is not difficult to walk or drive to or find from the main road to the south. The cache and contents were in good condition.
Thanks Maux Faux for the cache.

Found during a caching trip to Hiltaba, the Gawler Ranges and Whyalla with e.gregory1 for a few days. On Day 1 we traveled to Port Augusta and Iron Knob then camped out for the night near Lake Gairdner. On Day 2 we arrived at Hiltaba with the main objective to tackle the caches on Mark Bonin Peak 'The Lookout' and Mt St Mungo before traveling through the Gawler Ranges. On Day 3 we drove to Whyalla then camped out nearby for the night. Day 4 saw us return back to Adelaide, picking out a few selected caches along the way. Targeting a range of cache types (Traditionals, Puzzles, Earthcaches, Multicaches, and Letterboxes), a multiple of cache attributes, and a wide variety of Difficulty/Terrain combinations resulted in an entertaining few days with cool weather and great scenery. Thanks for the cache maux faux!
Happy mothers day. Found it. Nice day for a hike around Mt Laura for mothers day.
Haven't found a cache for a while so this one is ideal. Last log in the book was 2 years ago. It is nice up in the hills here. Very still and quiet on a summer afternoon. TFTC
From a nearby cache atop the ridgeline, I abandoned pushbike and headed down into the gully on foot
I pity the poor buggers who seek this one in their 4WD's
For one you shouldn't be driving around here destroying the fragile landscape
Second, you miss so much ...
... the smells, the sounds, the atmosphere of the good old Australian bush
The cache was a nice easy find after my stroll down the hill along the gullyside [^]

The scrub around here it the thickest I've ever seen it in this area, nice walk TFTC
Got within 400 m by 2WD then decided to leg it. Rediscovered that distance as the crow flies is quite a bit shorter than that over hilly terrain! Gorgeous sunset too.
A nice find while on a mountain bike ride to clear a few more of the Mt Laura caches. Almost got muggled by a 4X4 that came along as I was riding out of the gully. TFTC.
A great Sunday afternoon, hunting with team Affy. A nice walk down from parking spot as unsure if u-turn now possible with all gravel mounds blocking roads. Easy find once area of GZ considered. TFTC
Hard work for this one. Left my reading glasses somewhere here, in case someone manages to find them before we leave Whyalla?? (send me an email)

Found at 4.40pm GAFF1. This is what we like about caching. Finding information and exploring areas that hardly anyone would know about.
Just wandering around in the bush not knowing what gems are around you would be so boring.
Thanks maux faux.

Nice easy find and it was nice to look for a regular cache. One day I will return to tackle the micros. Tracks seem to go every where around here. TFTH
Had fun with family and trekking overland from Now You See It. Nice little trek for the minigeocachers.
Went in with YeahRight80 to kill two birds etc.
Signed the new log for this one and tidied up the cache site a bit, we took out the old box and binned it back home. Loved this little valley, had no idea it was here.

Found reasonably quickly with Jacob350!
Book was bit wet, May need a new box soon.

I finally got this baby after looking at it on my GPSr for years every time I came to Whyalla, to day I actually had the time and equiptment. I arived by 4WD with "the hunta" but that proved quite usless as we got to within 400 mtrs of GZ. (all the tracks are now closed off for 4WD access) So off we went on a walk, up the hill, down the hill, up the next and over to GZ [:d] A quick note in the book and then back to the car. YAY, finally off the radar. Now to tackle no country for old men.

Another of the trail caches we really enjoyed - this area reminds us so much of our home country in the Pilbara WA - minus the heat.

I came in from the north west, over the many hills and gullies..damnit! Wasnt hard to find but the terrain is pretty hard. I left Bunya's traveling wombat here today, just so someone will come and retrieve it. Beautiful coin

Found this on a fantastic Sunday. My dad took me driving around town in his Austin Champ. (Old military vehicle)
Whyalla is my birth place so it was awesome to come back 34 years later and find that people have left caches around the place!!
Found relatively easily, there are a few little road blocks but an average four wheel drive can 'get around' it.
TFTC TNLN Cheerrs.

Trying to get a quick last couple of caches in, only to end up bush bashing at the back of mt laura. Only managed to get this cache but had some fun getting there. Running really really late by this stage and had to find it quick. Geo-mum spotted it and we were out of there. Didnt realise until we got out that road was now blocked (we came in a different way) just as well we found a way out because we didnt have time to go back!! Cheers for the cache, will have to come back and find the others another time. So close to 100 but 98 will have to do for now.
Great spot for a cache, but a long walk as the tracks have been closed.
Keep an eye out for snakes as the warmer weather arives because there was a little western brown snake coiled up about five meters from the Cache.

Drove to within 500m and had to walk the rest. The hire car was not up to the job. The track the cache is on looks a good one for a mountain bike. Good steady downhill single track. Thanks for bringing me here Maux Faux. My last cache to completed in Whyalla is now ticked off.
Glad I got a big 4X4, coz it was fun getting to this one

We approached this one from the north after finding No country for old men. The down track from atop the hill was a bit hairy and had the geokids screaming and the Wife leaving claw marks in the dash, but we made it to within 30m of GZ. Nice drive by (ha ha ha).

Wandered over the hills and dales from Withering Heights to pick this one up. You could be a million miles from civilisation here, couldn’t you. A very arid landscape, but one that is none-the-less beautiful in its own right. Enjoyed the walk very much. Cheers

Strolled 500m from the previous cache, where I left the hire car. Interesting location. Salt bush, salt bush and more salt bush. The flora does it hard out on these slopes. Saw a prickly pear on the way back. Now that is a nasty plant.
Good thing I had left wife and mother inlaw at the shopping centre before doing this one.

I took the Camry in as far as I could. The track was wide but I knew the limitations of the 2WD. Clearance was the issue. Over at Withering Heights, I had spotted a white 4WD tray top. It was now following me up the track.
I had parked, and was embarking on the K or so walk. Damn hot, but it was my must do Whyalla cache. Trevor pulled up. I explained what the hell I was up to (orienteering… everyone knows that). He asked me did I want a lift.
He was randomly driving around the hills with his dog on the back. Who cared. I got in. I wrote his number plate down and shoved it under my seat (in case he was an axe murderer). Dead mans cop trick they tell me.
We drove slowly to within 40m of GZ. While I logged the cache, Trev did a Uee. Super nice bloke and a super nice and smooth 4WD. How lucky could you be. Pic attached – say hi to him as he drives around Whyalla a lot.
Caching – it’s not the numbers, it’s the people. [^]

I thought I was in the right gully, but with 200m to go the GPSr insisted I go sideways – up the hill. Oh well, the exercise was good for me and I got to see some more of the interesting vegetation and another look at the view while I had a breather. Seeing the creek beds in the gullies makes you wonder when they last flowed and when (or if) they will flow again – it would be a great sight. This certainly is an area you don’t realise is there looking from the highway.
