A pleasant day for caching in the Bairnsdale area and a little bit further afield.Mostly cloudy, occasional sun with no breeze, but it was pretty good for a Winter's Day.We found a good range of caches, learned some interesting things along the way, visited some great locations and discovered some nicely hidden caches. Thanks to djcache for this interesting and important piece of history.A favourite from us.

Great multi. Even better to see the igloos and original log book! Found on the Mega Capital Geobash coastal loop via Adelaide - Barrington - coast to Mexico City loop. A lot of caches and white line fever was sweated out. Thanks djcache and clear skies from TeamAstro. Cache the planet! TFTC - Ticking off catches In the area with HeliKelli. We worked through the waypoints and located the cache.

I started this multi a few weeks back when I was down visiting Kploz. We've been slowly ticking off caches around the Bairnsdale area as I teach him the tricks and tips to all the different cache types.........although he is starting to supersede me as this game has come naturally to him.Kploz wasn't the only one that was learning, while at WP1 we meet a very new caching team who were trying their luck at their first multi. It was nice to see the apprentice (Kploz) passing on the knowledge and skills he had learnt to a fellow newbie and he seem to be able to explain to concept well, possibly better then I did?!?!We departed without the new caches in toe, who decided that grabbing a bite to eat was a better option that being out in bad weather but we are use to the elements and made our way to WP2. We spent some time at this waypoint, possibly distracted by the other nearby cache and all the interesting information you can see at this location. Unfortunately it was getting late in the day and the weather wasn't in our favour to complete this cache, so we parked it for another day. With sunny skies and a cool breeze a few weekend later Kploz and I were set to finish this cache. I had worked from the location where WP3 and WP4 was a few years ago and it was great to see the 'Bombers' I work with gearing up for the summer again. As the CO clearly details on the cache page, I can confirm the mozzies around GZ are just as big at the Bombers! Their 'HIT' was at a much higher count than the 'MISS' which had us fleeing for the car after we somehow managed to scribble our names in the logbook. Thank you DJ for a great cache. Awarding a favourite point for the theme, history lesson and the research you have put into the cache page.

I really enjoyed this multi and the history that was learnt while doing it. The ammunition's bunkers reminded me of Nissan huts and that reminded me of my late mate Dak's Emu Mob who educated me on the history of them. Thanks djcache for the cache.

Helping out with a car rally based in Lakes Entrance and I found I had some time today to do some cache hunting so decided to try some of the longer to find multis in the area with mostly good success. The effort that has gone into the cache information on this one is magnificent and the locations involved are great, spot on coords and an interesting cache container at the end! All in all nicely done, thanks heaps to djcache and micaparamedic for this one.

I have been chipping away at this cache for some time, my wife works in Bairnsdale sometimes and occasionally I get the chance to sneak off to a waypoint and get the next lot of info to the next waypoint.
The cache lead me to a few places that I had never been before so I enjoyed the journey.

On trip to Lake Entrance for the weekend and the weather was so beautiful and had a great time finding your cache Very interesting about history. Worth to see the place. Arrived GZ and notice the rock sit there so I open and shocked to see thousands of mosq and try to attack me but I cant get in the car as dont want to see mosq in the car so take the towel to attack them quickly to get inside the car. phew. I am trying to open but it's very tight screw so my partner helped me to open, finally got it. phew. after logged it. Oh no again with mosq so quickly put it back and still come on me later finally got in the car. I never knew that Mosq will stay during the winter time.
fav from me.
djcache, thank you so much for placing it.

Ditto what 2Max posted about this cache, an amazing piece of history that we certainly didn't know about. So many lives lost, that I wonder what it would be like today in the same circumstances.

We were reluctant to do this multi in the beginning, because it looked like it needed a lot of time spent on it and we usually only give 5 minutes and move one. Once the research started it wasn't too hard to read more, the stories were amazing. Anyway, we eventually made it to GZ and signed the log. To djcache & micaparamedic, we thank you for the amount of effort put into making this multi one to remember.

On a final note, don't leave the car open at GZ, we had so many mosquitoes in the car, we were trying to get rid of them all the way home.

A favourite point added here from us - loved it.

You know, every now and then a cache comes along that really means something and makes you stop and appreciate things, and this is definitely one of those caches. We had plenty of time this arvo to tackle this one and we’re so glad we did - mr2max is into anything historically military related, and for me, my grandfather was an engineer for the RAAF and worked on the design of the Beaufort Bomber so every time there’s mention of it, it definitely grabs my attention.

We never knew there was a RAAF base at Bairnsdale, and it was fascinating to travel around to the various waypoints and learn some amazing history, and pay our respects to those who tragically lost their lives far too soon. For us, this sort of cache is what we truly love about caching, seeing some fantastic sites, learning all sorts of facts and history along the way and spending the next ‘however long’ still talking about it! Was also weird, but cool to be caught at GZ by the CO - and wished we’d had more time to talk, we’ve got some questions, so will send a msg shortly. Thanks so much for such a wonderful, well thought out multi - a definite favourite from us!!

Mary and Mark were in town to do a bit of family research for Mary's older brothers, especially her next oldest brother, Neil. We started this multi on the 11th of the 11th which was fitting. Neil was also in the army as a younger man so it meshed a little as well.
Today, we had some time available to spare, so having collected the info for WP2 yesterday, we headed for it today. More info was collected and off we went to WP3.
At WP4 we came a little unstuck until we found the door that opened and then saw the plaque that we needed to access.
As we approached GZ, a rather large truck appeared. The hire car was quickly moved to the verge, than another car appeared and then a rather large piece of earthmoving equipment.
It was a rather hectic area on an otherwise quiet looking spot.
The cache was found and the connection was made with the area.
A very interesting and at times moving multi.
TFTC and a favourite from an ex Bairnsdale resident and her husband and driver for this multi.

I found this over two days - one on either side of Anzac day.
Interesting to see how people have commemorated those lost in war and some of the history behind it.
There was one stage where it felt a little like "am I allowed here?" but no one was around to stop me Smile
Thanks for the cache.

After spending a delightful morning with our granddaughter, we had the opportunity to complete this long standing multi, learn more about the history of Bairnsdale and of course collect a couple more smiley tokens before heading home.
**Feedback To CO:** The access to one of the information sources would seem to be in a restricted area!

Apologies for the late logs, we are still catching up after an almost fatal computer meltdown.

Thanks djcache for placing caches for everyone's enjoyment.

I visited this cache with some muggle friends this morning. We had some time and they were keen to find some caches. For me, I wanted a cache to help them realize that caching is not just about finding the cache but also about what you learn on the way. This multi was perfect.

It took us a while to get started but once we were on a roll, moved quickly from WP to WP. We enjoyed reading plaques about the history of the RAAF Bairnsdale and visiting significant places connected to the armed forces. We had no problem collecting all the information and driving between WPs. Once we arrived at the final GZ, we quickly spotted something out of place and had the logbook in hand.

As we were looking through the contents of the cache, all hell broke loose as we were attacked by a swarm of mosquitos. These were not the small ones that are just a nuisance. These were big and unafraid to bite... rather reminiscent of what this RAAF squadron may have inflicted upon its enemies during the war. Whilst most of my friends ran for the cover of the car, I quickly signed everything and put everything back together before making a hasty retreat too.

This was a fantastic cache chock full of history, easy calculations, pleasant driving, visiting significant places around town and a decent size prize at the end. TFTC djcache. Favourite point from me.

What a great cache!

Took four kids and they really enjoyed each way point! We did find it quite emotional at times though so that's something to think about if taking a sensitive child.

We may have had issues with our GPS and had to call DJ for a hint right at the end but we'd come so far we just couldn't give up!

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon when I should have been doing more domestic activities I headed out with geo-sister for a spot of caching.

Main aim today was to complete this cache but a bonus was picking up a couple of other caches on-route.

At one point I did enter an incorrect digit which had us enjoying a nice drive down country roads but a recheck of my notes had us back on track.

Thanks for the history lesson.

Well today was it. Many moons ago i got nearly all the clues but had run out of time. So had a lovely day for it today. Lots of history learnt really enjoyed this one. Even wished the young fellows a happy new year and thanked then for their sacrifice and service at the other way point. Thanks guys for the hunt.

Oh and by the way don't stress too much about the log book i put a few spare pages from my note book in it. Should last a while. Happy new year.

Thanks Mr DJ for another great cache.

next time your near the area it needs a new note pad in it, but there is no rush.
I may do one myself if I am near by shortly

Thanks for this multi and cache.

I'm rather tired of new cachers declaring complex caches need maintenance when they don't...

Sometimes you make a mistake, sometimes you don't look hard enough, sometimes you aren't looking for what you think you might be.

Either way. Needs maintenance is not appropriate on a cache that you just didn't find. That's what DNF logs are for. A needs maintenance log might make an owner do a 100km round trip for nothing.

After having gotten the lead-up information to this one I was happy to see that the final was not too far away and once there the cache was found in the first place that I looked. Thanks djcache and micaparamedic for the history lessons.

I am not at all sure what the NM log is for.

What a great adventure, and what an aviation history the area has. Thanks so much for putting the effort in to create this wonderful multi.

06-Apr-14
We decided we would go for this one today, and weren't disappointed in it at all. We learnt a great deal about Bairnsdale's WWII history. The war graves were especially moving, and we loved the well kept cemetery. The info board about the deaths in training was disturbing, it really brings home the waste of young lives that war is. GZ was interesting, and we enjoyed our drive around the district. Left a pathtag to encourage others to complete this excellent multi. Thanks for the effort you put in djcache.

After a great time finding all the waypoints we found the final Our GPS had us a fair
Way from GZ but could of been because of all the trees.
Loved the challenge for this interesting multi so much so we have given you a favourite
point. Took TB Left small toy. Thanks for the great cache.

Was out at the gun club this afternoon and thought I'd check on this seeing as I was nearby. I also had recently found two trackables that have been MIA (appropriate given the theme of this cache) since returning from our 2010 Kimberly trip.

I knew they would turn up in the most unlikely place sooner or later - and they did last week. They were in a zip lock bag of hat pins purchased on that trip.

So nearly 3 years after they were last retrieved they are again liberated from their plastic POW camp and are on their way. Our most sincere apologies to the owners of the two items, though no doubt you'll be happy to see them on their way again!

Well, a fine Saturday afternoon. Need to come into town. Time to finally finish this one. I reckoned that I knew about where this one was as from reading the descriptions I knew where all of the waypoints were. I had looked around the final GZ cursorily one day about six months ago, but without a definite search area, 200 - 300 metres of roadside is a bit hard to search. Completed the waypoints needed to get the final coordinates, then had to wat so that I did not need to wade through flood waters to reach the actual location of the cache.
Found the container without too much trouble, realising that I had passed the location a few times six months ago, but obviously didn't have my eyes open!
What a brilliant tour of the history of this location and its sad history this cache provides. Much of this history goes unnoticed by both tourists and locals alike. Geocaching provides that needed kickstart to explore local areas.
TNLN SL. The log book is full.

Thanks for this brilliant cache djcache. A favourite from us!

What a fantastic adventure into the past. We had put this one off for a while having limited experience with multis but this afternoon around 4pm decided to start it and once started we were hooked we couldn't just leave it. So off we went reading gathering checking information to at last find the cache. I only wish history was this interesting at school as it would've been awesome tfth and look forward to doing another one like this soon Smile

Thoroughly enjoyed this one from start to finish with taurus1955. The book at waypoint 2 was helpful. I learnt lots of very interesting history of the area. I'm glad it ended where it did. Interesting structure nearby and along the way. Thanks for the hint, but glad we didn't need it. Took boomerang key ring and left a medal. I have awarded this one a favourite. TFTC

Glad we finally around to doing this one. We've been looking at it since the first time we cached in B-Dale. It was a great cache and very interesting, glad it didn't take us the full hour though as we had a big day planned. The log book is almost full and needs replacing. Great container! This cache has been on my list for some time now and it was today that presented the time to do it.
I really enjoyed this well constructed cache. As always your caches are well thought out and full of good info.
I found it really interesting that there was a bomber base right here in East Gippsland so far away from the war. I also enjoyed driving past the ruins of the base on the way to the final GZ.

A very interesting journey back thru history. We have visited family and stayed in and around Bairnsdale many times over the years, but had not known about it's wartime history. Thanks for teaching us about our past. It is nice to see memorials that are well cared for, and treated with respect.

Collected the info for this about a week ago and was just waiting for waters to recede before I collected the cache....ended up getting my feet slightly wet anyway! LOL Thanks Dave and Gary for an informative and historical cache. I love these types and this one had a special place in my heart as my grandparents met in Bairnsdale whilst my Grandpa was stationed at the RAAF base in 1945. Definitely had to log as a favourite! SL. Took nothing. Left Oz Mega Pie TB tag. TFTC guys! Big Grin

Today was the third day of our excursion out of Tasmania touring from Melbourne to Canberra and return via Gippsland. We visited a number of towns and areas today between Sale and Bairnsdale and we were lucky enough to find some caches along the way. Despite being overcast at times and some very infrequent showers, we have had an excellent day. It took us a little under an hour to complete this multi and it was, without doubt, the best multi we have completed. We learnt so much about the history of the presence of the RAAF in Bairnsdale during World War II, in particular the tragic loss of young lives through training accidents and other misdaventures whilst training. The closest we have come to such a satisfying multi is one at Ceduna in South Australia, another based on RAAF wartime training - this ranks second only because we have yet to find the cache (we have all the waypoints and the final coordinates but ran out of time to search carefully for the cache). We were very impressed with the memorial by the Princess Highway to the pilots who died whilst training at Bairnsdale - the design is simple but very striking and full of appropriate symbolism. Thank you djcache for a wonderful caching experience.

I was up early so I figured I had heaps of time to spend on a long multi.
The first waypoint I had been to before, but it is always worth reading these again.
The second, I guessed the number, was depressingly young. Walking up and down the ranks of white stone with sun shining thru their backs.
A quick stop, and I was through the extensive security that surrounds this establishment - there was no one there as I read the many boards and wondered when I would come across a plaque.
Plaque found, and I was off to an interesting building that didn't need a front door, as the blackberries we doing a great job in that department!
Fortunately, I didn't need access to grab the cache.
A really good and worthwhile multi.
Thanks, Robmc.

This was a very interesting Multi. We; well I, finally decided to take the time to do this.
We were amazed at that there are so many parts of the original base still standing; as I've only seen some of the structures from the road as you drive past.
Had a good browse at all the waypoints. Some very interesting reading, We didn't realise the number of deaths that had occurred, from this Base and the other Bases in the area.
Took the time to look at the display at Waypoint 4 then headed off to the Final GZ.

Took "There are no Kangaroos in Austria" TB and left Nothing.

Thanks djcache & micaparamedic for the effort you put into this Multi.

I was conducting a couple of days training at the hospital, so one morning tea break, I headed to the start of this cache and grabbed the necessary details. Then, at lunch, I headed to Wpt2 to do the same there. After work, I headed to the last two waypoints and then to GZ for a nice quick find.

A lot of work has gone into this cache and it made for interesting reading, combined with the information at the various waypoints. Thanks for the cache and the history lesson.

Very interesting! Great history lesson for geo-kid who loved working out the coords. Even enjoyed the long drive between locations. I assumed the final location was IN the creepy building but was too chicken to go poking around in there so I was relieved when the GPS led me elsewhere... until I had to stick my arm (screaming like a piglet) into a spider filled nightmare! lol Red Face Dont worry, I survived.
Took Etcha-sketch and brooch, left keyring and hair clip.

Found to day while I had a few hours spare in Bairnsdale. Another enjoyable and informative cache by djcache.
It often makes me feel sad at all the lives lost , but all the more reason to enjoy life to the full

Great multi and thoroughly enjoyed the history lesson. I don't think too many people would realise how many lost their lives here in training. We needed a bit of help right at the end from djcache as recent fence work had us worried that the cache may have gone missing but all is ok. Finally dropped off Goldy the Kangaroo TB as the cache was big enough to hold her. Thanks for the research and effort gone into the cache.

There is something special about spending the day with a jnr and showing them the history of where they have grown up.
This multi did just that. And for this reason we left the TB. As it is a special cache that all people should see and understand they area.
We were so proud that didn't need to use the hint.
However the farmer might want to know that his sheep were all over the road. Saw us coming and went straight through the fence and back in.!!!! .
For future travelers, who may have kids don't look in the shed. at way point 4. The sheep didn't make it.!
Thanks again for this beautiful cache.

I found meself at the start coords for this multi and was reading the notes.
The more I read, the more I was drawn into the history and sacrifice of the subjects of the cache.
How could I not follow the trail around Bairnsdale to track this one down Smile
The start location is a great location on it's own and set the scene nicely for the following locations Big Grin

Waypoint two was busy today.
What a magnificently tidy place it is [^]
I saved meself some time here by finding the secret codebook concealed to the right of the gate as you walk in Wink

Waypoint three took some finding and on my wanderings I drove past the cache location.
Useful for navigation purposes later Smile
At the waypoint I found the info I needed and set off the short distance to HQ.

Waypoint four and I felt at home here Smile
Having visited many of these facilities over the years they all share that wonderful feeling of being in a different world.
Everything neat and tidy, awaiting the next visitor.
I get the feeling that I'm wandering into somebody's home uninvited everytime, but don't worry, you are welcome Big Grin
Something about these locations keeps the riff-raff out and gives them an aura all their own [^]
I enjoyed reading the history on the walls.

And finally ... GZ.
A nice solid structure and a nice solid cache hiding place too Big Grin
The cache container is performing admirably and I took the "Purple Racer" TB and left "Devils Haricut" TB and a "Unite for Diabetes" TB.

Thanks for a superb multi-cache that must have taken a bit of effort to put together and was well worth the effort to find [^]

This turned out to be a good way to spend a hour or so on a Saturday arvo. Cruised around gathering the info required at each waypoint and visiting places I'd never been to before. Some very interesting stuff there. Very secure hide that will last for years. Again I can confirm no GC in cache. Some cacher must have it. I'd be surprised if this one had been muggled. T-Puzzle L-Firetruck Dropped off my own TB. Thanks to DJcache and microparamedic for putting in the work needed for setting up this cache.

Many thanks djcache & micaparamedic for a fantastic multi.

As a military man myself, I can appreciate the work and effort that has gone into creating this little gem. I have had a lot to do with these areas over the years, so it is good to see that others in the area can appreciate these snippets of long-gone, but not forgotten local history.

Many thanks again.

T: Magnet, 1 x TB,
L: Aeroplane, 1 x TB.

Found by Peter & Marian @ 1105 hrs on our Bairnsdale caching weekend with KI bug (Bug Bear & Lady Bug).
This was a very informative activity, enjoyed the knowledge imparted by the waypoints, even had a short guided tour at the last waypoint before leaving for the Cache GZ. GPSr had us within a cars length of the hide, TFTC djcache & micaparamedic.

What a great multi - when I saw this one while looking up caches in Darwin before the trip I just knew that I would have to do it. Had been to some of the sites before I got into geocaching and this made me appreciate it all the more.

Thanks for the great cache and memories - well done.

Took nothing - NO COINS IN CACHE
Left Austrian geo coin which I got from Goulburn

Located 1020hrs after TomTom failed and had to rely on the Garmin only. Just before GZ TomTom lifted its game and came to life. Doesn't seem to like cloudy days!! Enjoyed visiting the WP's and very sad to see that so many of our young died protecting us. Took Anzac pin and left soldier; which under the circumstances is most apt. TFTC

After reading the excellent cache page this cache was a must do for us. Like most, we have driven past here many times and never taken any notice of this memorial setting. Today was different and we found what we consider is one of the better memorials we have seen. Well laid out and cared for with all remembered from those who lost their lives during training to the Vietnam Vets. Wandering around these plaques you have plenty of time to reflect the horrors of war and those that gave all for the freedom we take for granted. After collecting the information we headed off to WP2 to another well maintained location, saddened by the ages of the youngest departed. We found some more interesting information behind the door on your left as you leave. Off to WP3 and because of the cache page we spotted things we may not have otherwise noticed. Another fitting memorial here and interestingly we have visited the memorial to the crew of Avro Anson W- SSTT near Sydney doing another multi cache. With WP4 coordinates in hand we headed off. We found the Plaque OK but the building appeared to be deserted so we missed the information here. We found out later that even though the place was deserted the building is unlocked and the public is allowed in. With the final coordinates in hand we headed off to GZ to find even more interesting relics from the time this area was prepared for war. Much more peaceful to day and the cache was located exactly where the GPSr said it would be. Took TB as it has been here a while.
Thanks djcache and micaparamedic for the well thought out cache and a great history lesson.
May they Rest in Peace.

Picked up dog tag left nothing.

Only our second Multi, but it was interesting enough to get us to take the time to follow it through to the end. It is good that there are so many parts of the original base still standing and that it is safe enough to leave the waypoint 4 structure open for visitors to have a look at the display and also have a cuppa for a donation. Took "Ocean Minded" TB and left "Lizard" TB.

Thanks djcache & micaparamedic for your effort in putting this Multi together.

Great one to finish of the day. Out and about all day with pprass and Ian_Penny as a part of our long weekend. When we came into town and saw what looked like a teepee, we just knew that it was going to be involved in one of the caches for the weekend.
The journey through this cache was very enlightening and sad with the knowledge gained of the loss of life in non combatten conditions. It is also suprising that such town was so proactive in getting things so quickly for the war time. We have lot to be proud of and sadden by. Thanks for bringing us through this journey we have learnt again. Its good to see that the locals are still proud of their history and maintain such dwellings,.Took traveler.
