Find#2548Got up early this morning h to claim some of the caches that I have solved on the Lake Macquarie heritage series. Before I could get there I targeted this one. The burning question on everyones slips is - if Deni_f talks in the forest can you hear him fall? The answer apparently is no. After signing the cache I went A over T and landed on the deck. All okay just a bruised ego. Cache and log in good condition TFTC
Out doing a one day section of the GNW on a magnificent sunny day, just in time to see the Dendronium orchids in full flower. Found the cache easily, with a little water inside although the log is dry enough.
#7485Asbestiform and I had been lured to the area by a new BFJ puzzle nearby. Decided to visit this one on the way home. Quite a few groups camping on this drizzly NYE. Clear path to GZ and a quick find of this 15+ yo cache.TFTC amcintyre
Quick visit after Lyre Lyre Pants on fire with Crash. A number of campers set up for a quiet news years eve. Short walk on track to GZ. Cache is in good nick.
Up visiting the Basin today and finally got the chance to have a go at the cache. All the closures riokun mentioned have been lifted and I was able to park at the camp ground and walk out along the Lyrebird Track which is in fairly good condition. It took me a little while to find the cache, though, as it had been completely covered in mud. There was a bit of water inside the container too, which I emptied out, though the logbook was mostly dry. It needs a good clean-out though as something amongst the swag didn't like getting wet.No mimics were encountered on my hike today. Many thanks for the hide in this nice area.
This was my main target today, to fill a 'Jasmer gap' and as gateway for some LMHS caches. There were numerous and sometimes contradictory signs around today, warning of roads closed due to a landslip / areas closed due to forestry work / diversions to the Great North Walk in case of fire etc. I just got the idea the Forestry Corp didn't want people snooping.
The only truly formal official item I saw today was a formal exclusion zone from 11:59pm 11 Dec 2022 - 11:59pm 30 June 2023. So not quite yet in force as I type. In particular this says that the nearby picnic / camp area will NOT be closed, and that the Great North Walk can still be used, as long as people don't venture off the walk into the special zone. I will attach some pics. Whilst I guess such a notice won't stop some people, the locked vehicle gate into the camp area will certainly make it hard to get a vehicle in.
As the period mentioned on the notice hadn't started yet - and that the notice itself says that the area is not going to be closed - I walked in in good faith. I took more of a direct approach than others - at the first bend in the road I went bush aiming directly for the cache. I tried to get to the walking tracks but never really found any, I guess they're overgrown. I spent ages looking for the cache in what turned out to be all the wrong places, and eventually when I looked a bit wider afield I saw the very promising actual GZ, and very quickly after had the cache in hand. Signed log and replaced as found. And walked back up to the car no worries. TFTC!
When I think of "mimics" I think of creatures that look like treasure chests - they're bit of a staple from Dungeons & Dragons and various fantasy games . The cache was the only treasure chest spotted here today.

In the mountains today, so made my way this way. Parked at the locked gate and made my way down to the camp-site, then back up to GZ. No mimics seen today, might have heard them...maybe

Seems this is inaccessioble at the moment, due to the logging in the area, and road closures. We tried to come in off Walkers Ridge Rd, but it was closed at the intersection with The Basin Road. Signs are saying 2 things. 1 that the road is closed due to flood damage, and a second sign that says the whole area is closed due to looging operations currently under way. The are will be open again in December.
Found this cache on a quick walk along this section of the Great North Walk while Mum and the youngest stayed back at the campsite and had a rest.
This track is pretty sloppy at the moment and the ferns are overgrowing the track at points, but it was still a fun find and walk.
Only had a few annelids when we got back to camp, so that was good.
Thanks for the Cache!

Thank you to all who have helped maintain this cache. We have moved away from area and cannot visit so often now. The name came from the fact there were at least 20 lyre birds around the original location mimicking the kids as they placed the cache. Very funny. Hope to return soon.

Finally.
We've noted this little cache out here on its own since our earliest days of caching, always thinking of the time when we'll get back out here.
Today we were driving across the Watagans to complete a puzzle series, and made sure to visit Mimics Lie while we were out here - we still don't understand the cache name though!
We parked and spotted a trail sign, the GPS assured us it would loop around to the cache, so off we went.
What a great little walk - like a condensed 'Cliffs notes' of the Watagans, the brook, rocks, cliffs, trees and wildlife (mainly lizards), which eventually delivered us right on the cache, which was in pretty reasonable condition despite its age and being fairly exposed. We dried out any water/mud which had found its way in, and added a new little logbook with the other pages, all in a pretty robust ziplock - should keep it in good nick for a while longer.... thanks for placing this, way before we had even heard of caching.
BTW - if you want the good walk - start at 33 06.229 151 13.826 - it will take 15 minutes longer than the direct route from the campground, but you won't regret it....
Thanks for a great cache.

After completing the LMHS Series, we decided to come over and do this one, after finding the path, we set out to get this one. After thinking we were on the right side of the loop, and walking until we realised we weren't on the right side. We just kept walking and it eventually reached the cache, was definitely worth the detour as it was super cool!

Popped by to say hello today. Couldn’t find it for a while... I’m sure this is the right spot (we’ve been here two times previously). So decided to dig and dig and dig. Lots of loose soil had built up around gz. We exposed the cache ready for its next visitor.
I had wanted to grab this cache a while ago when I was in the area but ran out of time. Today mr Minion and I were headed to Wollombi so stopped on the way. It was a nice walk to GZ and a quick find thanks to the hint. Thanks for the cache amcintyre tnln replaced as found sl
Found again! Last time was 2010 - our original log was still in the cache.
We did a repeat find with grandkids - bush bash following the arrow to the cache followed by an easy walk returning by the track.
A lovely spot for a find.

Having just completed the LMHS series we came to search for this one. We parked up at the campsite and then enjoyed the late afternoon stroll towards Ground Zero where the leeches found us before we found the very well hidden cache! We signed the log book where it was great to see we had resuscitated this cache with it not having been found since the 7th August 2018. We then replaced as found. Thanks so much for the cache and greetings from Zimbabwe
Found with BillHill531 on a trip up here to get some numbers for the Hidden Creatures Souvenirs. While other HAVOCer's camped the night before, that was not an option for us, and seeing we had done a few before, we decided to do these at our own pace (which was much faster...). However we did intersect and accompany the others at various parts throughout the day.
After finishing off the LMHS we came past this one. I had wanted to do this one for ages, seeing as its a pretty old cache. BillHill had done this one previously, so I left him behind and made good time on the walk up to the cache. Great area. Looked at the water on the way back. And saw another car, apparently dropping off some supplies for some hiking scouts.
Thanks for keeping this cache going, the walk and cache!

I think there was more difficulty in finding a parking spot then finding the cache. Surprisingly the lying birdies couldn’t be heard. Must have been on strike for better pay and conditions. Tftc tnln
We were out this way grapping a few of the Mega caches and decided to go a little further. We parked at the Basin and walked up the hill. Under the trees, my GPSr was taking me further up the steep rocky bit. Giving it a moment or three and it (the GPSr) came to its senses and steered me straight to GZ. All good there. Thanks amcintyre
Reperio at 1240.
On a day spent out in the Watagans finding a few places to hide some caches, I ended up at this beautiful little spot, so decided to get and go for a walk to find this one. Followed the trail right to GZ, where the cache was soon spotted. Was amazed to see this that this cache is just over 10 years old. Great spot.

Found with Team Novo, we where here mainly to get "All about the numbers 4. We found the nearby place to park and followed the track to GZ, for a quick find by Novo. Coordinates where pretty good for this one. TFTC Also managed to get some unloved points.
Out with HAVOC cacher BillHill531 today, whom I'd just met a few hours earlier. We were in the area to specifically grab the nearby GC35ZF8 Mystery cache but a couple of weeks back before the 10 days of rain we just had, some of us C4 cachers came out this way to get three caches starting here at Mimics Lie before moving onto Tower Power and then hopefully GC35ZF8. But after losing caching buddy barefootjeff in the forest tracks nearby on the way to this one we had to forfeit to make it to the meet-up spot for Tower Power in time for the HAVOC cachers coming in from Cooranbong. Plus later that day by the time I got to GC35ZF8 (the main objective) it was too dark and rainy lol. So it was nice to knock that one off today and then make it down to leisurely checkout this great campsite and then up to Mimics Lie. A few leeches back at the car but nothing like an hour earlier lol. TFTC, amcintyre.

While in the Watagans and after just completing a walk up Mt Warrawolong we drove down to the Basin Campground. A nice short walk to this cache which was easily located. After we signed we continued on the short loop up around the rocks and back along the creek to the carpark which turned out to be an excellent little walk. TFTC.
Found while on a Scout hike from The Basin to Mt Warrawalong along with icemanthescoutleader and others. Thanks for the cache!
Out with the watagan wanderers Bush walking club and our walk went right past this cache. I stopped the group for a minute to grab this cache. Lovely area lots of leeches and great rainforest nearby. Tftc
Came out on a bit of a four wheel drive adventure with the wife and geokids through the yarramalong valley and Kulnurra area to clean the last few stray caches off the map. Thanks for bringing me down into the basin campground. What a pretty spot. Enjoyed the walk, and made a quick find. TNLN TFTC
Found this with my muggle brother while camping nearby at the Basin campground. Spot on Co ordinates made for an easy find. Plenty of leeches to pull off once back at camp. TFTCM

Spent the day with Cricket again. Lovely spot.
Cache was quite wet though. Dried it out with the Rabbitohs tissues (thanks to who ever left those). Would benefit from extra zip lock bags for swaps.
Thanks for this cache. It will be added as a favourite.

Second cache of the day. Watagan Mountain locals. Changed the zip lock bag. JazzyTedTeak.
Camped at the Basin while walking the Great North Walk and took the opportunity to find this cache. While listening to the screaming cicadas, we managed to find the cache quickly so we could escape to the quieter location of the Basin. Lovely location, unfortunately the water tank was empty. TFTC. After trying to get a second FTF during the night we were back to the Watagans region, and the cicadas had certainly woken up! Otherwise very quiet. Took a short walk as the morning was warming up. Found at the second place - nice.
Took: Trek to Castlebrook TB, just not sure how many caches it will fit into. Left: nothing.

Having been in another area of the Watagans last night and frightening a lyre bird half to death, it didn't know what to 'say', I was reminded of this cache while coming back to find some trig stations.
Found @ 0935, GAFF1, shame about the amount of rubbish we collected on the track, while not a bag full, too much!
TNLN, saw a trackable, but I think MVMB took it.
Brought through for mileage: 12-12-12 Event, 3 Bros NSW, Auckland NZ'13, B 2 B Travel ingot, Iconic Bridges 2012, cache critters Baa, Neigh Neddy, and Oink, NZ Mega 2013 GCookie Coin, Travel Bug Racer 80s Corvette, and trackable shirts.

Very limited on time today, rushed out to Wyong first for overdue tasks and then on upto the Forest once again to finalise the August months challenge. I haven't been up here to the Basin for many years, or was it decades; and didn't remember anything to be honest.
Just a couple of other people here at present, so I trudged off in a more or less direct line, umm, then the GPS started spinning like I was in the Bermuda Triangle or something!
The direction of the cache was actually flipping 180' ugghhh not now, not today, not here please !
Ignoring my possessed compass reading I kept a straight bearing, up through chest high fernery and a minor ravine or watercourse which was very dry and leech free The compass bearing improved, so now I looked for the clue, but spotted a nice walking trail instead, progress to GZ was now very fast and the CiH very quickly. Left a TB for the next adventurer as a draw card, this is a fantastic area and needs promoting.
I spent the next 30mins walking uphill and around the nearby caves that are only just visible from the trail. It reminded me a lot of Hanging Rock in Victoria.
If your reticent about the road quality don't be its pretty smooth so get out here, bring the tent and make a weekend of it.
FAV awarded, it took me too long to return here.

It was way too hot for a sensible person to be walking up here today. The leeches could be seen hopping out of our way, deterred by Bushmans. A bit of a search was needed to find our prize and we were soon logged and out of there before any snakes decided to have their turn. There were two very large goannas hunting around the camp ground. My victory over the leeches turned to disaster when I found one that had somehow gone down my shirt unnoticed and attached twice until gorged, blood everywhere. We did leave a fish in the container, this was just our sort of cache, so thanks to amcintyre for the fun.
Found today while enjoying a day in the forest. Saw some pretty wild flowers along the walk. We were all less appreciative of the baby leeches!
I was not too far away placing a new cache so headed down to grab this one. It tried to avoid me for a little while but I soon found it. Nice area to wander in.
Thanks.
Thanks.
This is a great spot in the mountains to visit, and its rely great to be able to do some caching while here, lets all hope this great area of public state forest does not fall into the clutches of NPWS and get fenced off and locked up to fester into a feral waste land like every thing else they touch. I have been coming here for over 40 years and this place is still great to visit the management practices of State Forests is far superior to NPWS. I hope this area will remain open to all for generations to come, just in case put this one on your to do list, bring lunch and spend some time here while you can. TFTC.

A cache I had walked past a hundred times before I began to cache. Dropped Boo's Bike travel bug and took out the crocodile travel bug. TFTC.
We took the long hard way in through the rough bush. What a beautiful spot with lots of birds singing and wonderful scenery. On our way out we found the "Lyrebird Track" and it was much easier. We took the spring and left a red car and TB Bayou Beastie. This was the first cache experience for our two friends. TFTC.
This was the last while enjoying a lovely camping trip in the Watagans with fantastic friends, Bikiganoo & Spikemikey. Nice area but not as good as the Pines where we stayed. I did not take anything from the cache but did pick up three leeches and SM picked up one. Little blood sucking buggers.
A last find in the Watagans with TheHeadChef.

this one was also a good drive. following in the dust, you don't really know where you are heading.
so followed the dust trail to the campground then made our way to the cache with all the event attendees.

Its so good being the trip leader on these event weekends cause the dust on the way out to GZ was awesome...... that poor pushbike rider.

Found in the company of many during the Watagans 4x4 event. As Rats mentioned, that poor cyclist must of had enough of the dust from the constant flow of geocaching traffic as he'd given up and was walking by the time we drove past. This was a nice & easy cache for us as the energetic group of kids running ahead had already found it before we even got there. We could with them more often!

we also joined the congo line and headed up hill. the geokids wasted no time in finding it. it took longer for every one to log in. and then the congo line turned around andmarched back down the hill again. tftc i wonder if the owner ever thought that their cache would have so many visiters in one hit?

Found this one on the Watagans 4x4 Event weekend.
Being placed at the rear of the convoy mean't that by the time we arrived parking was at a premium and a congo line had already started for the cache. Up the hill we went and after the caching stuff was done Buddy the wonderdog went for a swim in the creek with his new found girlfriend.
Needless to say we spent the rest of the day with a dog scented deodoriser in the car.
All good fun.

After having set camp at the Turpentines, the participants in the Watagans 4x4 event headed bush to find some geochaches.
This was the largest collective find we have been in; between 8 and 10 cachers signed the log book in the cache which was found by one of the Geokids.

This cache almost signaled the end of my caching. I came, I found and was soon on my way. An hour later and 20km away I couldn't find my GPS and desperately returned to the cache to search. Fortunately I spotted it lying on the ground half way up the track, having averaged its location really accurately for 90 minutes. Luckily it had retained enough charge to continue for another couple of caches.
We where too late for the Lyre Birds and the Boobooks had just started their night time chorus. The night time walk was magic, the bush was alive with wildlife scurrying about the tree tops. The clear skies revealed countless stars and with the hot weather made this a thoroughly enjoyable experience. On returning to the car we just rolled out the bivvy bags and dispensed the sleeping bags.
