Unable to find final cache or the hint object with a group of 7

22-Nov-23
This is the last multi I need to complete the 10 day 'multi', streak challenge. So, it was off for a walk in the sunshine. Not many muggles about today, and no one around GZ.Thanks for setting this up

20-Nov-23
Quite straightforward and a nice walk to the final. TFTC!!South Australia is the place be for GCA1DNA - MEGA - February 29th, 2024 in Adelaide! Hope to see you at The Great Leap Forward!

26-Jul-23
Started this multi a week ago, but we hadn’t allowed ourselves enough time after school to complete before dark, so we had to turn around halfway. Having visited the first two waypoints on our initial adventure, it was a much quicker journey today. No problems finding either of the waypoints or the cache, which was completely dry inside despite the outer bag (?) being in tatters. Great to see the original logbook still in existence some 16 years later!
Looking at the river, we would definitely cross further upstream, reckon a carriage would probably get bogged down in the mud/silt trying to cross near the cache.
We took the Old Coach Road on the way up, back via the beach. On our return journey we saw remnants of a fire through the driftwood, a dashboard of a car hanging from a log, some sheep skull and bones, and a recently dead and washed up cow!
We made it back to the car just in time to find a log to sit on, eat some chocolate and watch the sunset. Favourite point for the history and a fabulous walk.
Thanks Boogie-O

Did this one in 2 stages. Geokid 6 did waypoint 1 and 2, then Geokid 9 came on the bike ride to collect the final. Such a fun cache, great for kids. Thanks for placing.

21-Jan-23
Out for a wee weekend caching adventure with my geo-parents (honestly, I will never get tired of saying that). Since getting back into caching after an almost 8-year-hiatus, I find myself pretty much only doing traditional caches - which would make this my first multi since 2014!
Had a really fun time doing this cache, but boy does it get HOT at GZ for the second waypoint - bring a water bottle, don't leave it in the car like we did!

21-Jan-23
Out on a bit of a mission with [tylerdrummond](https://www.geocaching.com/p/?guid=7df10e33-cf94-4629-9d59-2d10a56e28e2) to knock off a few caches around Otaki.

This little multi has been on my radar since doing one of the other caches in this Old Coach Road series.

The appropriate information was soon located at WP1 and we were off to attempt our first river/stream crossing. What's the best way to cross a river? A bridge... However all the best bridge building timber was on the other side so we walked through the river and dragged it all back across ready to build our bridge. Tyler then suggested we just walk through, so we did.

WP2 was in a slight hollow so there was no cooling breeze and the sun was absolutely baking. I was beginning to feel light headed and was about to bail to find some breeze when Tyler said "Found it".

Off to the final GZ and this leg we thankfully managed to drive just about right to the cache thanks to the super abilities of the mighty Suzuki Alto Geo-waka.
Soon had cache in hand. Quite a cool (yet incredibly hot) little adventure with a local history lesson on top!

TNLNSL Thanks Boogie-O

Second look for this one, nearly a year since the last. Stopped off at Te Horo Beach to double check waypoints, then came along to GZ. Success today! Good to turn blue to yellow. Coordinates were still some metres off, but new hint gave me the right steer. FP from me for all the Old Coach Road caches. Tftc!

27-Dec-22
I wasn’t planning another trip up the coast, but someone got me thinking about it Found WP1 after a quick circuit, and with the lack of a container didn’t worry too much about the muggles gathering driftwood. WP2 took a frustrating time crawling in and around bushes, but was as advertised. For the final I initiated the new geomobile into caching along sand tracks and parked 300 metres from GZ (so I could grab the trad… although DNF’d it). Cache was a quick find. A mostly enjoyable adventure and was good to have the reassurance that everything was in order. Thanks Boogie-O; my last multi/mystery/trad dot day mission until next year.

10-Apr-22
Rode up to the final to check it out. The previous hint item has gone, but the cache itself is exactly where it should be and in good condition. The hint has been altered to suit. Checked out WP2 on the way back, also in good condition so the whole multi is good to go.

29-Mar-22
No luck here today. After tracking down two WPs with a dint of athletic ability (he runs, he leaps... Splashdown!), I arrived at GZ. Unfortunately, could not find anything resembling the WP2 hint item within 10m, and the cache certainly wasn't there! Spent about twenty minutes hunting before calling it a day. Will watch and return.

19-Feb-22
The signs asking people to stay away from WP2 have been removed and the baby birds have fledged and flown the area, so the cache is once again ready for the next finder.

09-Jan-22
Am temporarily disabling this cache as there are some endangered native birds nesting very close to Waypoint 2. Will re-enable it as soon as they have fledged or moved on. Any logs during this period will be deleted -our wildlife comes first!

31-Dec-21
Great multi! WP1 was a nice quick find. WP2&3 took me quite a while to find. Both coordinates put you exactly where you should be looking though so don't stray too far. TFTC

28-Nov-21
Passing by today and decided to spend some time doing this fun multi. WP1, no problem here. WP2, took a bit of searching and eventually found the container laying on the ground away from the hint object. All safe and dry so returned it to where I thought it belonged. Made my way to the final location (I drove) and struggled to find the cache. Got there eventually. Had a lot of fun with this one, TFTC.

20-Dec-20
Found it!

28-Dec-19
Out and about with Flowerydaze on a lovely sunny Saturday. This was a great multi with a history lesson thrown in. Co-ords were all spot on. So all was left to do was enjoy the walk, which we did. TFTM

28-Dec-19
I've been wanting to do this multi for some time, but I must admit I was put off a bit by previous logs. Today, however, with perfect weather for a wander, Talla64 and I set out from Paraparaumu to seek out this cache, and learn a bit about the history of early transport in the area. We were pleased to leave the main highway when we did, as the holiday traffic was starting to build up. Co-ords for all 3 waypoints were spot on according to my phone, and it was a quick find for everything. We got a bit hot during the walk from WP2 to the final GZ as the path is quite sheltered. A most enjoyable multi. Upon returning to the SH for the trip home, we were not surprised to see the traffic going north was not only bumper to bumper but was now stationary and we were glad to be going in the opposite direction. Thanks so much for the multi and for the interesting history.

14-Dec-19
I hadn't realised this was a 3 stage multi until finding the first waypoint. A bit of a paddle and the second waypoint was found then off on a wee adventure to the final. Thanks for making us explore the coast a little more than we otherwise would have. TFTC 3 15,009

22-Mar-19
Very nicely set out multi, loved how the first waypoint was hidden, cache containers and contents nice and dry, enjoyed my stroll along the beach to the final and returned via the old road, added a Pokémon to the cache, TFTC

02-Mar-19
Waypoint 2 fully reinstated at same coordinates but revised hint. Found original container under the storm debris, but it was damaged so have replaced it with (hopefully!) safer set-up.
So, it's all good to go:-)

05-Aug-18
We started looking for this Multi in June but we had problems when looking for WP2 as it was buried under a pile of debris after the storm. After contacting the CO we were given the final co-ordinates but didn't have the opportunity to continue to this location until today. This multi provided a great walk with the dog, whilst giving us a bit more insight into the local history. TFTC.

20-Jun-18
Didn’t read he activity on this weekend Neil we got to WP2 and had a hard time. Only passing through so we will pop by next time and see if WP2 is alive. Number 1 was nice and easy and a really cool beach for a walk with the dog. Thanks.

02-Jun-18
Found the first one, no problem, but the second one was under a pile of driftwood and only then we noticed the activity log that it is not active anymore, it’s a pity as it was our first Multi-Cache. Anyway good fun.

30-Mar-18
Had to wait for yet another flood to subside (rather like the old-time travelers!) before I could check on WP2. Yes, it is definitely buried under several tons of storm debris.
However, WP1 and the final are both safe and well; to keep the cache alive while I work on modifying WP1 and replacing WP2, I am happy to provide the coordinates for the final to anyone who emails me an exact description of the nature of WP1 and the correct coordinates for WP2.

22-Mar-18
Will get across and check this, replace if necessary.

13-Mar-18
Attempted this multi cache while out and about for a drive this afternoon
The first waypoint was fine and soon was heading to waypoint two.
At this point it looked like a significant flood had hit the area, and we found heaps of driftwood and debris lying around.
Made us wonder if the cache had either been buried or lost

05-Nov-17
Had an awesome time with my wife on this multi, was a tough walk there as we chose to walk on the beach not the greatest idea!. Took a wee while to find the cache but had fun doing it, and met a couple of new friends along the way.( Seal pictured, baby bunnies not) Tftc.

30-Jul-17
Found during a day out with SAROC and Yeetrees mopping up a number of caches around the coast. After all the wet weather recently, the day dawned clear and bright, just a wee chill in the morning air. All in all, a fun day's caching.

A great multi in a nice area. We used to 4x4 approach to get to GZ.

TFTC Boogie-O

30-Jul-17
Out caching with Yeetrees and Gonefishing with a trip to the coastal areas of the Kapiti and Horowhenua.
With the information in hand for the final we bumped along the track sometime selecting 4 wheel drive to ensure we didn't have any problems. The drive made it a lot easier and with a short walk at the end and a quick search we soon had the cache in hand. TFTC

#9324. A nice day to visit Te Horo Beach today. It was clear and calm. We took the good walk option to visit the second site and the final. Both locations were all quiet when we visited. Found after a short search. The coordinates for WP2 were pretty spot on, but there were quite a lot of hiding possibilities there. We did not see the hint object at the final GZ, but expanded our search and then found the well-hidden container about 7 metres away. The cache was in excellent condition, all nice and dry inside.

Dropped off Walking shoes
Took nothing, signed log.

We returned the way we came, and leave the further exploration of Otaki for another day.

Thanks for the placement and the interesting history, and for bringing us to these sites, and …

Awesome cache. Not sure i should have driven down old coach road in honda oddesy. Take a 4x4 or walk

22-Apr-17
Thoroughly enjoyed doing this cache today. The weather was perfect and the sea and river flat calm. It was bumpy enough on bike and I kept thinking how bumpy it must've been in a coach. The river entrance looked crossable at dead low tide, but as soon as the tide started coming in, it was a different story. It must've been very scary crossing as the tide came in or the river was flooded. Cache was very dry and in great condition. Thanks for the cache and the history lesson.

All good here, TFTC

13-Mar-16
We had worked out what we needed to from our visit to the first two WPs a couple of weeks ago. But we were pressed for time then and excused ourselves from making the trip to GZ. On a sleepy, sunny Sunday we found ourselves in the area again and this time we headed north and to the site of the final.
The cache proved to be a straightforward affair, Cache in order; log signed, then safely re-hidden, just as found. Enjoyed the preface to the log, and did just as it suggested. Surveying the options to ford and imagining myself here in the early days of pioneering and coach travel. Nice one.
This has long been on my list of coastal caches needing to be discovered. Pleased to have finally made it.

Cache # 2,656 - had been hoping for a better weather day today, on a big day out with Crystal Fairy. However it was not to be in the morning so we decided to do a series of shorter, but still demanding, walks. This one had been on both of our lists for a long time. I had previously found WP1, but the journey to WP2 was the most challenging part of this cache. Took the long way around to it, rather than through the semi-raging torrent that was the river today. Not too long a search once we reached the area, and we had the final coordinates in hand. An interesting walk from there (does someone really live in that derelict caravan on the way?), and cache was a quick find at the end. Swapped in a dinosaur and took a penguin. TFTC!

12-Sep-15
This was quite an adventure. Found where WP2 was supposed to be and found us separated by a very fast flowing river to get to it. We had to make a 400m detour to get to WP2. After that the final was a reasonable quick and easy find except that the hint didn't really make sense. Thanks for the cache and glad to finally have this one off our list. Did with Wandering Dragons.

first multi point cache. Did with my family and was the usual mix of fun, arguments and frustrations. gorgeous day in a gorgeous piece of the world. tftc

06-May-15
Have rechecked WP2, placed more copies of the Final coordinates and made the spot a little more obvious with a newer YBT. The old one has almost become part of the soil.

30-Apr-15
Took a look at WP2 -it's still there, but was a bit overgrown. Have cleared the site a little (not too much!) and placed a newer piece of driftwood over it.

29-Mar-15
Found first point right off the bat. Have been to WP2 twice and am wondering if it has been taken, swept out to sea or blown away.

19-Jan-15
Great walk, found it after a bit of searching.

08-Dec-14
I have had my eye on this cache for a little while and found myself with a bit of free time time today so took the trip up the coast. Seeing as it had not been found for over a year (and only 3 times in the last 3 years) I wasn't sure what I would find but thought that I would give it a go. As it turned out I had a terrific time here today and this would have to be the best cache that I have found for quite some time.
WP1 took me a few minutes to find although it was staring me in the face, then onto WP2 where I rolled up my trousers for the stream crossing. This WP took a while to find as there were a lot of hint objects to check but eventually I had the information I needed.
I then decided to drive to the final location along the track which was quite an adventure in my non-4WD vehicle. I made it, with a few hairy moments, but probably wouldn't attempt it again given the choice!
The cache was a fairly quick find at the final and it was a pleasure to sit in the sunshine reading through the logbook.
Thanks very much for the very enjoyable cache, a favourite for sure.

19-Oct-13
First people to find in the last year! Had a great day for it, and had no problems finding WP1 & WP2. The final cache took a bit of searching for however and I was a bit worried it might have disappeared in the last 12 months. Finally found it just as we were about to give up. Not quite where my (admittedly not very accurate) GPS said it should be, and didn't tie in with the clue either so I wonder if it is still in the original spot. Still in good condition though. TFTC!

07-Sep-13
Made a start on this multi but ran out of time to complete

24-Sep-12
A beautiful morning so I decided that I would try my luck here but given that the cache had not been found for over a year I was not sure what to expect. Located the information at WP1 fairly quickly however both WPs 2 and 3 were fairly inundated with debris so took quite a bit more effort (especially at WP2). I dare say that my trip to the final (via 4wd) was in a bit more comfort than those early travelers.
Thanks for a fun multi with a very interesting piece of history - It is a pity that it doesn't see more visitors. TFTC

19-Jul-11
A very enjoyable cache with some interesting history associated with it. Came here this morning on a beautiful fine calm day - magic! WP1 was a quick find. I managed to ford the stream in my tramping boots (there was plenty of water in it) without getting wet feet, but I was a bit dismayed when I got to WP2. There had obviously been a really good storm fairly recently and there was driftwood all over the place and signs of recent inundation. I was fully expecting the cache to have been swept away and was quite surprised when I located it after about a 15-minute search. I emptied out quite a bit of water from the container but the final coordinates were still clearly readable. Drove along the track to within about 300m of the final and walked the rest of the way; found the cache after a short search, all dry and safe in its hiding-place. Signed log, TFTC!

27-Mar-11
Great fun by MTB, and supervised the the owner after a gourmet lunch and glass of cold Reisling! This old road must have been hard work after heavy rain. Enjoyable multi and expansive scenery. TFTC

07-Jan-11
I completed this adventure search totally on foot. The day was a bit cooler than some we have had recently so it was quite pleasant. I had no problem finding the waypoints or the final treasure. TFTC, Boogie-O.

06-Jan-11
Found WP1 and 2 yesterday while having a walk from Peka Peka to Te Horo and back. Decided the extra north part would finish me off. Enjoyed both WP1 and WP2. The second was down to only two bits of paper so I just took notes. The hiding point was a little bit open and the timber split and broken (dog attack?) so I did my best to reform. Cache in good condition however.
This morning drove to the end of Sim and in the spirit of the Old Coach Road struggled the 1.6 kms in the heat and loose stone of the beach to the Final GZ - great exercise and an easy find at the GZ.

Great multi- very enjoyable Thanks.

Last additional hint - the word "slab" was confusing and threw us. Great multi cache. Thank you.

23-Jun-10
Found WP1 and 2 last week. But I ran out of time then to look for WP3.

WP1 was easy peasy, but WP2 took a bit of searching in several spots before I found it.

I returned today and drove along the track to within 250m of the cache, and then walked along the beach. Decided on this tactful approach after reading the previous logs regarding encountering the local resident. There was smoke coming out the chimney so he was obviously at home at the time, but didn’t venture out into the cold to meet and greet this morning.

It must have been quite an arduous trip in the early days, interesting to note that by the1870’s, rivers had been responsible for over 1100 recorded drownings, and drowning had become known as ‘the New Zealand death’.

On a more cheery note, a well put together Multi. TNLN SL TFTC

An enjoyable and informative multi. We managed to keep our feet dry going to WP2, which took a while to find as we found a number of hint objects. As we were short of time, we drove to within 70 metres of the cache. We didn't see the nearby local resident, but were greeted by his dog on our arrival. TFTC

Was a bit nervous about completing the final due to the presence of the nearby resident but pretended I was enjoying the beautiful sunset. TFTC

Started this cache a while back, finally had a chance to finally finish it off, what a cool multi, arrived at final GZ in the car and was approached by a local who was just a bit curious as to what I was doing. Had a quick talk to him that I was just looking around and checking out this spot and also talked to him about the local history. He was quite satisfied and wished me a good day and then rode back to his batch on his bike with his dog in tow. Cool spot for a final, can just imagine how busy tis area must be in the summer. COOL, TFTC TNLNSL (1113)

A nicely put together multi on a rough day at sea. First easy, second very wet....rough brown ocean didnt help...and we had to navigate around the whitebaiters....number three easy to find...

13-Jul-09
Think it was my idea to do this one in the dark - not the brightest of ideas as the terrain is better suited to being able to see where you are going! Had to tie Hugo up to one or two random logs, then could hardly remember where we had left him. Poor Hugo - he really must wonder why we insist on scrambling around under logs and bushes looking for little plastic containers. TFTC.

13-Jul-09
Barri-Ster, Hugo the dog & I did this cache in the dark - must say we cheated and drove along the beach between the waypoints and to the cache(stream was rather wide and deep and didn't want wet feet). Cache was a little way from where our GPS's were indicating. Must say this is not ideal to do at night with the difficult terrain. SL TNLN TFTC

30-May-09
We went for a MTB ride with the owner to this one (he didn't give anything away!). It was very interesting to read the history of this old coach road, and then experience its cobbles and stream crossing for ourselves. Thoroughly recommend doing this by MTB - about an hour's easy ride all up from Te Horo. Thanks Boogie-O.

22-Feb-09
A very interesting cache. Access tracks to WP2 and 3 give a great taste of how travel nust have been! Strayed off the hard surface near WP2 and got bogged in loose stones. Soon free with help from all the drift wood about! Final took a short while as seemed a few metres north of where I first looked (plus hidden by a different sized object than expected!) Dug a few holes in the sand needlessly!

08-Feb-09
Great multi with really interesting WPs. A long walk but nicely set up. Plenty of people also out and about with a few on horseback. We especially enjoyed crossing the river. Took some time to find the final. Sore feet but a fun day out nonetheless. SL. TFTC.

I have been meaning to do this cache for quite a while.
Today was a good oportunity and the weather was great.
I managed to jump across the stream going in one direction, but got one foot wet going the other way.
A fun cache and an interesting piece of history.
Thanks

Spent sometime on this one. Walked around in circles for the 1st clue, seemed so obvious when I found it. 2nd clue found quickly but final cache, that took sometime as GPS seemed to jump around the place today. My son and I crossed the river a couple of weeks ago with mountain bikes, but would never attempt it in the winter unless further up stream. I used to swim in the river when I was growing up in the area and it can get quite deep in places.
I think the coach used to cross a few hundred metres up river, hence Old Coach Rd on the Otaki side of the river.

The river continues to erode southward. Final site has been moved to a safer place, cluesheets in Waypoint 2 replaced with updated information.

28-Jan-08
Found the cache after finding the second way point a couple of days ago and at that point left the last and final point until today. I don't know what have been worse - the trip across the Otaki or the tooth rattling ride along the beach!
Thanks for the cache - well done!

09-Jan-08
The floodwaters have receded, the cache is safe for now, in its original position. Approaching Waypoint 2 will be a damp mission for the next couple of days though!

07-Jan-08
Visited to check effects of today's flooding. What was a long way from the river is now 15 metres from a raging torrent -have uplifted final cache, will relocate and update listing when the river settles down again.

Hmmm...first day back at college after hardcore geocaching in the South Island left me restless in class....had to get out and do some caching! A break in the rain and a brand new multi only KM's from my house was perfect!
Drove my way to the 1st WP, found no problems. Drove as far I could to the second waypoint before having to cross the "small stream", which had engorged into quite a big stream after the rain! Needless to say, gumboots were insufficient to keep my legs dry Razz Found the 2nd WP without much difficulty. Took Boogie-O's advice and drove along Sims Road, then found I had to do drive along a dirt path for about 1.2km! Plenty of puddles "cleaned" my car (which led to it's much-needed cleaning later!). Got to a place to park within 100m of the cache, and found it no problems.

Early start today to get up to Taranaki for some cache hunting up that way. Quick check of computer before I left and saw this one just listed, cool, it's on the way.

Got to WP1 and thought I saw WanderingPom's car out parked on the road (well at least one very much like it) so that had me worried. Was still there when I headed off for WP2 so decided it couldn't of been after all, phew!

No problem to find WP's or final and a very enjoyable multi, plus always enjoy a cache that teaches me something I didn't know. Howling northerly this morning which certainly added to the atmosphere when thinking of how to cross the river, very scary.

Signed log at 0730 (hehe, man that's early for me) and grabbed FTF award thank you. Had same thoughts as Skytracker at the final, possible flood zone?

06-Oct-07
First to log on line, but not FTF. ADV beat me by about 45 minutes. That will teach me to have a lie in!

A very enjoyable cache. I spend a lot of time on the north bank of the river, but had never been here before. I suspect that the coach crossing was up near Crystal bend where it is wide and shallow. There is also an Old Coach Rd off Rangiuru Rd in Otaki that heads more or less in this direction.

I hope that this cache is going to be safe when the river floods.
