A great day out. Just under 3 hours to the cache and another hour to the summit of Mt French. Just as we were about to leave the summit the cloud opened enough to enjoy some of the view. Stunning! TFTC
Spending the winter woofing, tramping and exploring the west coast caching along the way ..of course..
Back in greymouth for a while working at the Noah's ark backpackers...so a good base to tick off a few more..
Set myself a mission to hit 8000 finds by the end of the year...that's an average of 6 a day ..
After reading previous logs I thought I would give this a crack this afternoon left the truck at 1.30pm made the summit by 3.40pm...it is a serious climb up reminded me of the climb up to liverpool hut in mt aspiring national park all roots and not much else for the first hour(did doubt myself if I had enough time to do it)..heaps of wind fall in the lower section which made for slower going..took about an hour to get passed the worst of it and up over 700 m
Second half was only slightly easier but some great views once above the bushes line...made it to gz and I really thought it was going to be a dnf as a new building has gone up and looks like another to follow plus big metal pipes right where I wanted to search..hadn't brought a replacement either...wandered off to take a few photos then came back and scratched around...bingo..well buried ..well it has been 4 years..log damp as you would expect..
4.5 hr round trip..made it back down with daylight to spare...great wee hike..

Under 4 hours to the top and back including stop. Amazing views up there. The hills once you reach the peak on the other side look so great. I started after my school day was done. The 2015 finder did not write in the log book. Tftc
She is still ovre there! What more.. she is dry event it was under a snow cap. I didn't sign the logbook because its pen didn't work so at least I took a photo of it. I found it while I was hunting up there but due to a crappy weather those chamois were lucky so I got at least this cache. By the way it was a nice walk, 150 minutes up and 75 down.. TFTC
What an effort. Had sore legs from yesterdays adventure in the mountains - a 23km hike in the afternoon and then this cache today. The first 60m of the track is by far the worst part, the rest is not as steep. Having done Te Kinga and think this is the easier of the two. 3 1/2 hours up and 2 hours down. Had lunch at the 1000m ASL mark on the way up as I needed the rest. At about 700m ASL the trees thin out and I could see the top looming overhead, almost put me off but psuhed on.
About 3/4 of the view was obstructed by clod but the view inland of the Southern Alps was great.

I've always been of the opinion that if you're going to climb a mountain, you might as well do it on a day that that'll reward you with a view. The coast has been deprived of rain for some 25 days now, and with that schedulded to change tomorrow, it was the ideal day to make the ascent (and descent!) This was a solo effort by B. The nice thing about this place is that there was phone coverage all the way, to inform the other team member how it was progressing, and great radio reception to keep me entertained for the hike.
Having asked the boss about this track (you name it, they've climbed it) and being informed that it was a "much easier walk than Te Kinga, I was feeling pretty smug that this wouldn't be too bad a hike. The section past the bush line I found to be a killer. Look at some topo maps and you'll know why. With the sun beating down, and the track not taking me directly to the cache, this wasn't fun. I was reduced to 50m climbs then a rest to recover. Once the terrain looked suitable, a direct line was made to the cache. This chewed down the distance and was very welcome. It took me 2:30ish to reach the cache, a good 40mins covering the last 300m. Woodrow.72, your time is safe.
The descent was fine, slow and steady. If only I was able to climb down as fast as I can go up... Thanks for the workout.

Woohoo!FTF. was intending to run up Te Kinga today, but when this popped up , it was a challenge to good to resist.
Not many opportunities to stride out, but did find heaven at 750m (see photo-it was almost a benched track for 50m!).
Weather cool and cloudy at summit, no views today, but good views at bushline. Had a blast. 2hrs up and 1hr down. TFTC
