**ATTENTION: the cache container side clip is broken and the log book is saturated. It will be un-signable next time someone comes here again. Please bring a waterproof replacement container. In addition the Cache Description URL needs updating or be removed re: -NSW National Parks report.** In May 2020 we attempted to reach this cache but discovered that the road directly to the cache from the Canberra end is now private property. We thought that we would probably never come this way given the massive detour now required from the Wee Jasper side - over 20km to GZ from the Wee Jasper Road. However, with stormy weather forecast for this afternoon it meant that our preferred outdoor activities needed to be rescheduled. So, we decided this cache was our target having half a day free before the rains. The trip along Doctors Flat Road( off Wee Jasper Road) was interesting with beautiful bush scenery mostly mountainous, and a handful of interesting defunct businesses along the way. We were lucky today that we could travel with ease in our SUV all the way to GZ. However, the last quarter of the drive to GZ could become boggy in parts after lots of rain. Today we were fortunate enjoying a relatively smooth ride. There have been a few large trees that have fallen across the road relatively recently which have been cut and moved to the side. With today's high winds it was certainly on our minds not to linger around GZ for too long to avoid getting stuck on the wrong side of a fallen tree with so many swaying close by.At GZ the old car and other machinery are quickly breaking down and are being consumed by nature. The cache took a long while to find with our GZ jumping all over the place. However, it would have been found far quicker had the cache hint been a little more precise. The cache lies in a concrete hole below ground approximately 40cm out from the base of a tree 2 -3 m from GZ. The hole clearly fills with water so the cache container gets water logged each time in rains. The log was barely signable and will need to be replaced as with the container that had one side-clip broken off. Given the cacher does not appear to be active we were reluctant to make the replacement as we would change the GZ location to ensure its future longevity away from water, fallen branches, bark and leaves. That all said, we enjoyed the drive and the location and had fun in the process. TFTC herca!
A nice day caching near Wee Jasper with this cache being the main target. The road in was in very good condition, however I would recommend caution after heavy rain or high winds. Several large trees had been cleared from the road and some sections close to GZ are slippery when wet.The drive is very pleasant and scenic and OK for cars with sufficient clearance. The last one kilometre is the only part of any concern for cars that are not all wheel drive. At and around GZ there are many old remnants from the sawmilling days, including old machinery and vehicles. Spend some time looking round, and in the warmer months be on the look out for snakes. The hunt for the cache took a while despite it being close to GZ. It was well hidden by fallen tree litter. The log book was saturated, but could be signed. The cache container was in good condition. An enjoyable detour.TFTC
We're very slowly clearing out our remaining unfound caches in the Wee Jasper region. On our last trip a couple of weeks ago we had intneded to get here, but ran out of time so made a special trip today. The roads aren't too bad for our Japanese SUVs and it's always great to see a historical location marked with a bit of NPWS signage.SA's log tells the story of the deep search for the buried, wet cache. Gad to have this one ticked off! Thanks, herca.

I'm still officially on leave, but had to work this morning (with a morning off later on). As soon as my meeting was over, I just had to get out caching/exploring. I have been eyeing up this cache for the last few years, and despite it being less than 30km from home as the crow flies, it seemed difficult (timewise) to get to. It turned out to be a pleasant nearly 2 hour drive, all the way to GZ. Once at GZ, the cache (at least the remains of the cache) was soon found. I came prepared with a new cache container. I managed to break open the remains of the old container, but all the pages of the log book had been burnt. Just the spiral and cover remained. Attached are photos of the old container and it's contents, and one of the new container.
From here I thought I'd explore how far I could get towards McIntyres Hut. It was only about 10km as the crow flies but it turned out to be 23km by road. I managed to drive 17km in my AWD, then biked down the rest of the way. It was too steep to ride much of it back up, so had to push my e-bike. What a slog. All up 5 hours for the round trip to there and back to here. Then another 2 hours drive home. TFTC.

This one has been on the must visit list for many years. Today on the way back from WJ, I decided to come down this road for a look around. It's probably 30 years since I was last down here. Got to the National park OK, then onto the sawmill. Spent a bit of time looking around various objects according to the hint, but didn't find anything. GPS wandering quite a bit. Eventually I spotted something and I found the half melted cache. The melted end was facing up so provided great camo! Anyway, contents not accessible, so grabbed photo.
Headed further down the road to the Mountain creek crossing. Worth the short drive as it was flowing nicely.
Thanks,

Thanks,
The container was melted and half of it was gone. It needs replacing, but otherwise a great area and very interesting!
Found at 2:40:00 PM
Went for a drive in the mountains today to explore and see if Pig Hill is accessible the Wee Jasper end of Doctor's Flat Road (it isn't).
I found what it left of this cache. It's going to need a new container as this one is half melted (see photo). Couldn't get the lid off. If you can't maintain this cache I'd be happy to adopt it for you.
Thanks herca

Gate now locked where Doctors Flat Road meets Mountain Creek Road. Access to this cache maybe still from Wee Jasper, maybe. That, or jump the gate and leg it! Locals not happy others use a PUBLIC ROAD I guess.
Great place for a fully cooked up storm of a breakfast on our way to wee jasper for a swim. Great spot this one. Found with Bruce's run, mosaic1212 and Sammy.
I took this road from Wee Jasper and its not that bad for my trusty Subaru Outback. Gee I love
that car. This road further down has a few deceptive signs saying private property, gate closed. I ignored these signs and the gates I did come across were all shut but not locked. mmmm
Anyway this sawmill certainly is in the middle of nowhere:-) People used to work here??? Cheers.

Well this certainly turned out to be a bit more of an adventure than expected. We came down Doctors Flat Road from Wee Jasper, got to the old Mill and found the cache reasonably quickly. The cache is still quite damp and we weren't there long enough to dry it out. It's interesting looking around the wreckage in the area, even on the other side of the road. Unfortunately the vegetation is taking over a bit which makes it harder to look around.
Ok, that was the easy bit... After leaving the mill we continued south on the way through to Canberra. All was going fine until we got to an intersection with Doctors Flat Rd, The Maginot Trail, The Baldy Range Trail and what appeared to be the continuation of Doctors Flat Rd but it had a sign advising of a locked gate ahead. We had limited fuel left, enough to get through to Canberra reasonably comfortably, but not if we had to go back towards Yass first... What to do ?
To cut a long story a bit shorter, we eventually took the GeoOutback up the Baldy Range Trail that split back into Doctors Flat Rd at the top of the hill (exactly how my old Magellan Topo map showed it), after squeezing past a fallen tree and over lots of debris we got back down the hill to find we were back on the road that advised of a locked gate ahead. We decided to take our chances and continue. There were indeed quite a few gates between there and Mountain Creek Road, but thankfully none of them were actually locked. We made it through and continued on to Weston for fuel and to breath a sign of relief !

Heading home from Wee Jasper, and decided to take an alternate route today. The rain made it a little trickier getting here, but overall, an enjoyable trip in.

2222 GAFF1 Trying to get some caches further away from home, but noticed that this one does not quite make the > 500 km from home like I thought it would. Nice spot to stop anyway. Good coordinates meant a quick find, so left a Correct Site Marker - surgical marking pen.

Luckily there was no traffic on the road, as it gets quite narrow in a couple of places. Saw a few kangaroos and wallabies, and a couple of dead wombats, and even a live one. Didn't take too long to find a way into the GZ, and with good coordinates we soon found the cache. TNLNSL

Was tempted to turn back about 7ks in but kept going and found the rusty treasure @ the end.
Out for a drive and a spot of caching with The Green geckos today. This is one of the very few caches that I found before she did!! Thoroughly enjoyed the area. TFTC
Great drive out to GZ from Tumut. Cache was wet so we replaced container, filled it up with goodies and put in a "kind of " log book. The original damp log book is still there as well but it was a bit hard to write on. The sistema we had on board is far from new so can only hope it is weather proof. TFTH
Great Cache........loved the old stuff that has been left behind.
Great day out on this lovely wintery day in Canberra.....what else is there to do except go cruising through the Brindabellas - looking at all that thick, crisp, white snow.....
Cache was not exactly where it was supposed to be according to the co-ords and hints. Moved it to reflect hint and co-ords.

If the cache is still there it was too hard to find for us.
Looked in every hole (there are many) under and around all trees. Couldn't find it.

There was a lot of old stuff around here. Not quite what we thought it would be and couldn't really amke out anything that looked liek a saw mill. Nice spot all the same.
After looking around for a bit came up with the goods near our starting point.

Interesting piece of history. Took as a while to locate the cache; don't think all the tree cover helped. Loved all the old mysterious machinery left behind.

A very interesting place, I would have loved to seen it in its hay-day, it is so overgrown I would never had guessed it was here, caching really does take you to some pretty amazing places. Thank you Herca
It was so tempting to just log "JAS TFTC", but I couldn't bring myself to do it. We hunted for a bit before finding the right location, and the party explored the remains in the area. I liked the old car rusting away, but reminded myself of overdue tetanus shots before attempting to get in the car for a photo. We went the long way home just to get this cache, and it was an interesting place to visit. Thanks for the cache.
Found this one with Wasptor and Family on our weekend Camping Trip (6 of 7 for trip)
Taking the slightly rougher track back from the camping weekend, when we found this one... Driven past it before, but this time managed to pull out the GPS to find the cache.. cheers.

This, along with Hang in there at Pig Hill were the reasons for taking this route out to Wee Jasper on a geodrive. A nice little spot - we loved the old truck. It took us a while to find. After trapsing around for a while looking under numerous trees we read through the previous logs, which gave us a better hint. - have added coordinates that we thought were a little more accurate (according to our Garmin).

This cache has been on my to do list for ever, so with a new ute to bring for a spin today was finally the day so I grabbed mr_roo and we took off. After a pleasant drive out here we arrived and spotted all the old machinery but had to grab the cache first. The cache was a little damp and the log was too so mr_roo grabbed a new bag for the log and we drained the cache before replacing it.
We then spent a while looking over the remains of the mill - great place, we love exploring these old bush places. Thanks for the bringing us here.

The reason why we came on this road today. Well ok we wanted to test out jusojara's new ute out as well. Which I can tell you drove like a dream.
We got near gz and had to cross a fast flowing creek. Crystal clear water and such a great place, well should I say a top place. The area was called top crossing afterall.
Got to gz and wow love places like this, so much history and just to see the rusty old trucks and car was so interesting. Really loved it and can say FINALLY I made it out here. TFTC

Spent a lot of time looking all over. Was surprised where it was. Co-ordinates seemed about 2-3m out to me or perhaps I was just distracted by all the stuff.
Wanted to find this one for a while now! Wanted to take the hot rod out for a spin. Seemed it was out of fuel today though.

A drive by cache with the GeoSon and a pile of friends toward the end of a day 4WDing in the Brindies.. TNLN
Found with little red shoes, our second find for the day.
This one took a little longer to arrive at GZ - partly because we took the Sawyers Gully Rd instead of Drs Flat Rd from Wee Jasper side (!) and then GPS was out 9m. The journey to GZ was therefore double in scenery...
Scratched about at what was indicated GZ by GPS and came up empty handed. Re-read description (and hint) which led us to look at a spot slightly closer to the geomobile and cache quickly discovered.
A nice spot to check out the old sawmill and the weather today was perfect.

A s commented on other logs could not find this cache, looked around every tree with no luck.
On our way back from a camping trip in Wee Jasper decided to take this road to the cache to get home. Never been on this road before and in our new all wheel drive car it was lots of fun. Sadly couldn't find the cache we think it has gone awol as a few of us looked and found a good hidy hole but no cache. Thanks for bringing us along this route though as it was really interesting.
Took a trip to Wee Jasper, collecting caches along the way. Scratched and searched, but couldn't find this one, but it didn't ruin what was a very enjoyable day out in the country, being our sole DNF.
Found this cache with MrFlibble, JenJaret and two newbies. We actually had to stop here to change a flat tyre, so we changed the flat and found the cache. A very interesting site with lots of machinery. We had a bit of fun poking about in the bush.

Found on a morning's caching with our good friend Rbirtles, his geoson and my cachekid. Nice drive through the Brindies, but we only had a few minutes to make the find before it started pouring with rain!
Nice spot, would have been good to have a poke around longer. Thanks for the great cache location Herca!

Found today with Newberys and both our geosons. We gave geowives most of the day off to earn brownie points so Newberys and I can have a full day caching for ourselves some time in the future... My geoson claimed the cache find which had taken us a while to find while the storm clouds, rain and thunder started to make their appearance. I couldn't imagine working out here during the sawmill times. Would certainly have been hard yakka. Many thanks for the cache!
Joint effort with Mightybent. Lots of interesting rusty metal things here. It took a few minutes but we got there.
After a bit of searching finally found the right spot. Interesting location and drive back to Canberra. Thanks

Halfway to Wee Jasper a nice little break on the windy dirt, great views even past this one, so dont turn around and go back!.
Surprised to see how much growth is in the area, searched around and marvelled at all the old rusting feats of engineering of decades past. Nice area, shame it's not kept in any condition to 'show off'.

Despite the roaring heat, we decided to take the bikes out this weekend and thought that a spot of geocaching would add to the adventure. Out to Uriarra Crossing for the start of the adventure where we met the farmer whose paddocks are intersected with Doctor's Flat Road. She wasn't real happy about us using the road either, but eventually gave way to the good old arguement "Actually, it is a public road, we are allowed to drive/ride on it". Alas, we now discovered that while we had the printed directions and co-ords (including the picture from the cache info), we didn't have the GPS unit - too much of a hurry when we left at 6 am!
Skiping Capital Climpses, we thought would at least try for the Hume Sawmill - that one should be a little easier with no technical support. We checked the odometer, and the topo map (not a usual tool for geocaching, but a must for motorbike riding in the NP's) and set out. Going slow (lots of dust) we were enjoying the scenery and then noticed that we had done around 4 kms too many. Hmm, we hadn't noticed any signposts. Turn around, head back a little slower this time and low and behold we found the spot.
Thankfully I ALWAYS check the encrypted clue (after a few too many DNF's) and after a quick think we spotted the cache.
Thanks for a great day riding, a really beautiful area.
A note for any future cacher's: Doctor's Flat Road is being widened during Feb 09 and the notice at the entry states that delays of up to several HOURS can be expected during this time. I would suggest perhaps removing the cache during road works so it doesn't get dozed, and replacing once they are finished (if the location still exists!)
Also, around 300 m before the cache (from Canberra) there is a decent size branch across the road. Bypassable for 2-wheel vehicles, someone in a 4WD would need to do some relocating (simple 2 man drag job)

Found it on the way to Wee Jasper for Matt and Shell's 4WD weekend event. Took Sol De Lune's coin, thanks.
320 - Had a few hours this afternoon to go caching with Sol de Lune.
We decided to do a couple of the more remote caches up this way. It took a while to drive in this far - including opening and closing about 3 gates - but we arrived at the location and soon had the cache in hand.
I wrote in the log that 'you dont have to be mad to be a cacher - but it sure helps...'

Another afternoon out caching with AusCan1965.
Decided to head out to some far flung cache and work our way back. Took almost an hour to get there from the suburbs, along roads that ranged form good to almost 4WD use only.
Found the cache as the clue suggested, signed the log and returned the cache to it's hiding spot.
TN, left a pathtag & TFTC.

Australia Day - perfect day for a bit of caching. Strange part was, on way along Doctors Flat Rd. I passed a house flying the Aussie flag at half mast! Very odd.
Never been into this neck of the woods, but had heard years ago of the existence of an old sawmill up in thems parts & had thought a visit would be interesting. Surprised how good the road was (not the slightest sign of any 'quags' to mire in), although I certainly wouldn't consider being in there in the wet.... the ground just has that pale, washed-out, eroding, 'spewy' look about it... a sure sign to exercise extreme caution.
Anyway after the cache was easily found, lunch partaken & all the relics examined I headed back through Wee Jasper and home through "The Banks" (for something different).

Thanks very much herca. I enjoyed this place.

This was really rough going today in my 2 wheel drive holden station wagon. It had been raining all day and the track was like a river in places. We slipped and slid in and out of there. We were going to continue on to Capital Glimpses, but the rain started bucketing down again and we decided that we better beat a hasty retreat, least we become stuck in there.
The hilux did it very easily, thanks for bringing us to the area. Couldn't see much in the dark, but enjoyed the drive up in the hills none the less. On our way up we passed a couple of 4WD's with pigging dogs in the back, isn't it National Park???? Would have loved to have been a ranger then! They can get away with that but if we tried to take our lovable geo-hounds with us we would be sure to be caught!
Found 1:40pm.
After reading previous log entries, I waited until it rained to tempt this track (I like a challenge). Unfortunately, it was easy going. Did I miss the swampy area? Oh well. I'm assuming it's all relative to the vehicle you're driving. If you have a REAL 4WD (no, not your Forester, mtbikeroz lol) it would pose little problems in the worst of conditions. It looks like a great track for a serious off road machine, as the mountain bike is and it's a shame you didn't get to use it. I really need to get one, myself.
I ran into the same Kookaburras. Strangely, they only laughed once I'd found the cache, which took 20 minutes as the co-ordinates had me in the old water tank, or whatever it was used for. During this time, I'd left my hat in the car and managed to cook my scalp (8 years I've been shaving my head, and it's only the second time, so not too bad a record
Took: Strongbow Keyring Bottle Opener, which came in real handy on New Years Eve
Left: Magno-Z magnetic dude that had been touring about since Mysty Mtn Rd, stuck to my bull bar.

Thanks herca for encouraging us to go on this adventurous drive through the bush - very peaceful and lovely bush. There wasn't a great deal at the site but it was interesting in any case. Will attach a photo soon. Nice forest - not burned out like Canberra.
CT slowly and carefully took the Statesman all the way to Wee Jasper - quite an enjoyable trip.

I remember seeing this one get published and was going to rush out and grab it but after driving from Queanbeyan to Cooma to Tumut to Wee Jasper to here in a day I was just about buggered by the time we got to the cache, little did I know the road only got worse....
Thanks herca for bringing me through here, I may only do it one though!

A great bush drive to get here. At least for the eight gates there are two caches. I was a little disappointed there was not more to see, but I suppose this was abandoned a long time ago. Thanks.

Did it in a 2wd about 50 minutes after mtbikeroz going in the opposite direction. Grabbed the geocoin before it got too comfortable. TFTC
After reading about the quagmire, I decided to take the serious off road suzuki only to be disapponted by no quagmire.
It was busy out at this cache today and I was the third to find today.

OK, so I've ridden my MTB out here to Wee Jasper in about 2000, so I was going to do the 2 caches on Doctor's Flat road and the Wee Jasper one also, but this time I had to be back in time to vote, so I took the car - Thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it.
Having been out on this road before, I knew exactly what it was like, so a slow and careful drive and it was easily done. Not too wet, just a few boggy patches, 1 deep creek crossing, one fallen tree I had to remove from lying across the road, and it was a pleasant little trip all the way to Wee Jasper picking up 3 caches for the day.
Hey Tate_alec, there wasn't enough rain to make it a quagmire, I saw it as a quagmire after a VERY VERY WET Winter back in the mid 1990's.
Was first there today, early in the morning, found cache easily, a fair bit of water in the cache, loved the site. Dropped off a Geocoin and TB, then off to Wee Jasper I went.
TFTC herca.

It may be "much more interesting" trip to Wee Jasper, but DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT attempt it after a lot of rain, not even in a Forester. Those fields you pass through become QUAGMIRES! (and some of the elevated roads are VERY SLIPPERY) Its a beautiful scenic drive/ride when daylight, but considerably slower than the normal route to Wee Jasper.
I'm looking forward to being out there again.

I saw this come up on the weekend, and went.... GRRRR the flaming Canberrains have finally got there...
I was actually surprised that there wasn't a cache there already.
I visited the site only a couple of weeks ago with my 4wd club, doing recces of various tracks in preparation of a tristate 4wd club meet to be held at Easter next year.
I am coming down again soon, I hope to get this cache then.. Hopefully I'll have learnt to spell by then....

No - no quagmire yesterday! I don’t like quagmires! And no, BBBB hasn’t attended Farrer play school, but attends Wanniassa Hills Primary.
As Herca's driver I think it is OK to claim a discovery on this cache. We happened to spot this sawmill relic on a bit of a track after the tomtom told us this was the best way to return to Canberra from Wee Jasper.
Despite the bravado displayed by the three chaps hooning past at speed in their old Holden 2wd ute while hiding the cache, this is a track to take care on and I was very keen to get home given the brooding clouds on the horizon.
We came through here in a Navara 4wd and despite what Miss Daisy might think, it was a bit steep in parts.
Cheers,
djblrts.
ps I think that FTF of the Hume Sawmill by Herca must have attended Farrer playschool. Can you say your name for me ?

Yippee! My first *FTF*! It was nearly dark when we got there, and the kookaburras laughed at us when we were looking for the cache! TNLN thanks for the fun.
Wow – now that was an adventure!
Chooo ooo *FTF* with BBBB.
A new cache pops up just after dinner – called Hume Sawmill! – I have a rough idea where Hume is, it’s not that far! And that sawmill has been in the news lately? So I type the coordinates into tomtom, and BBBB and myself are off! Back in half an hour I said!
Anyways, tomtom starts off as per normal, turn left, turn right, turn left... That was odd, I was expecting that to be a right turn. Oh well, tomtom does that sometimes... Anyways, after a while, I was wondering which way we are going to Hume! I haven’t been there often, but I do have a rough idea where Hume is! Oh well, I trust my technology.
About 20 minutes later – once we hit the dirt road, I decided we weren’t going to Hume! The dirt road got narrower and narrower. There was lightning in the distance. There were cows horses and kangaroos! It was starting to get dark! The trees were getting taller! In fact this was a spectacular drive. Everything was wet, there were big puddles, the smell of eucalypt, and the odd farm smell in the cool damp air was fantastic! There were shut gates – but BBBB was familiar with that task, and kindly opened and shut them for me. After a few more gates we were there! – It was almost dark, but there was enough light to find the cache, and a few other artefacts. The kookaburras all started laughing, that was funny. We signed the log, but made no swaps. Soon we were on our way home. It was now completely dark, except for the lightning in the distance. BBBB fell asleep, so I had to open the gates myself. Thanks for the great adventure herca! And I’ll have to remember this way to wee Jasper – it’s much more interesting!
