Nice and quick. No luck fishing at ocean beach this morning so me and the geo-pooch are caching our way home. Tftc.
Wow!! Nearly a year to the day since anyone found cache. Staying in area as attending the Kahutara school 125th. I went to the school in the 60s with my brother and sister. My dad also attended along with mums dad. I have spent many happy hours water skiing and fishing the diversion but never walked to the confluence of rivers.
Bit of a harder Cache, had to climb over some fences and do some digging to find it. Otherwise really nice and taken care off.
Thank you so much for bringing me to this spot. I managed to drive down, but the road is bumpy and I wouldn't try it after rain.
A chilly and bumpy walk! The lonely cache took us bit of a search, think had moved slightly from original location, and grass had matted over it. Returned to the logical spot. TFTC J’N’K!
#7962. After weeks of COVID19 lock downs and restricted regional travel, it was great to be back out on the road and doing some geocaching once again. I picked up Barefootguru and Infoferret and we headed over the hill to mop up a few straggler caches left behind in the southern Wairarapa after various past road trips in this area. The weather was a rather bleak and cold late autumn day with chilly fresh winds from the south and a few skiffs of light rain/drizzle at times.
None of us had done this cache before so we parked at the gates and walked down to GZ. The track is quite rutted and the long grass made it hard to see the hollows and humps. So had to walk carefully to avoid rolling an ankle. But good to make it down to the confluence of the two branches of the same river. The hiding place seemed to be logical but after all three of us had checked each spot carefully we were wondering where it might be. Until BFG felt the container under his foot. It had rolled out and was hidden under the grass. Log was all good. Signed and replaced in the logical spot. Thanks for the cache J'N'K.

How none of us twisted an ankle on the way to this one surprises me - especially as GSEL was distracted by his bird counting. But we made it here, and then the search began. Spotted the hint item, so we knew we were in the right place, but it still took a wee while before BFG located it. TFTC, glad we didn't come her in Duck Shooting season was a maimai being built in the other side of the river....
Well I've left my prescription sunglasses at home so I wasn't driving but even if I was, and the gate was open, I still wouldn't be driving down here. We safely negotiated a couple of electric fences and now I can honestly say that I've been there and done that! Good views of the confluence too. TFTC # 12,711
Some interesting information here - - thanks for that. We had to really rug up for the walk along here, but as always, we were prepared for that. I was pleased that the electric fences were nice and high so they were easy to negotiate. Thanks for hiding and maintaining this cache. It's been around a while hasn't it.
Well protected logsheet inside several ayers means All good at GZ.
Quick find where all good at GZ. Thanks for another smilie

There's always something classy about a cache using a camo bag not the least of which is the always clean container and generally dry log book inside All safe and dry here This is a favourite spot near a small family retreat so a favourite vote from me On the last occasion I came here a kotuku (white heron) was wading in the shallows TFTC
Found on a soggy evening stroll from the boat club. Crocks proved useful as I was ankle deep in muddy water. Cache doesn't appear to have been found for a while. It's very overgrown, but definitely findable and all nice and dry. TFTC
Replaced this afternoon with a smaller 200ml sistema in a camo bag. Hint altered slightly.
On arrival contents all around the container and cache lid in multiple bits. Will need a quick fix or will just be a pool of water.
Good job I brought my gumboots today as they were needed to get to game zone. No problems finding cache but in poor state. Contents strewn around site and cache lid broken and smashed into multiple pieces. Put everything together but this will soon just be a pool of water. Will need maintenance quickly.
A quick find after a walk along the track. A nice view of the confluence at the gz. Came over the hill to a days caching in South Wairarapa. TFTC
Decided to go for a spontaneous car trip with LCBuilder and the geodogs. Going where the caches take us and sleeping where ever we were when the sun went down. We had no trouble finding the right gate and decided to try driving to the cache since it wasn't winter and the weather was dry. We got part of the way no problem, just with the sound of long grass under the car :s but then there was a large dip.. we tried to go through and I think we would have made it but then after the dip, the land became very lumpy and bumpy so reversed back over the dip and to safety. Walked the rest of the way. Definitely glad we didn't try to drive on. TFTC
Drove part of the way to this cache and tested out the suspension of the car. Decided the stretch the legs for the last chain or 2. TFTC.
Absolutely brilliant day, no a cloud in the sky, still some snow on the mountains - a great walk.
Mind you, I would consider driving the track from the sluice gates (wet or dry) unless you have a very gnarly 4WD - it was bad enough walking it - very rutted.

Over in the Wairarapa with a group of Venturers for the weekend. Left them to their own devices and the two older Orsome4somes went on a little GC-ing roadtrip. Don't often get the opportunity. Quick find! TFTC
Over in the 'Rapa for a Scouting weekend with Venturers. Had the chance to skive off and do a bit of exploring, and caching. A nice quick find at GZ, but to save time rode the MTB out as far as I could - lots of big ruts filled with cow pats - looooovely!!!

Cache # 1,701 - well, hadn't expected to be back in this area again so soon, but a planned day out with Crystal Fairy and gang led us back here. Unfortunately we were in two vehicles, got separated early in the day, and ended up going mostly our own ways. Did this cache with Violet Butterfly and Astro Hunter. Lovely walk, although very wet in spots and glad we didn't drive. Had to tip water out of the container, and it could probably use some tender care, although everything inside seemed fine, if damp. TNLNSL. TFTC!
Yay! A cache big enough to swap some toys. Did today with Wandering Dragons and Violet Butterfly. Thanks!

Found today with Astro Hunter and Wandering Dragons. Had fun trying out our new walking sticks found amongst the driftwood at Ocean Beach. Swapped a trinket. Thanks!

I didn't look closely enough at the map. Pulled up to a gate, then walked nearly a half kilometre before I realised I was on the wrong side of the river! Will try again sometime coming from the correct angle.
A little walk to the cache and a nice and big container

cache 26 on day two of Etherlord and the Seagnoid's almost-100-cache-"Attack on Skindo's Puzzles" weekend in the Wairarapa. #71 for me
Skindo: 58
Others: 13
Was planning to walk here from the boat ramp to give the kids a stretch but wouldn't you know it, they're both asleep! Drove all the way down instead and they somehow managed to sleep through the roller coaster ride!
Hunted for a bit before tS made a comment about how cool it would have been if the cache had of been hidden [there] but he'd already checked it and not found it.
I checked again and immediately pulled out a ~3L container.
How did you miss that tS!?!?! It wasn't even camo'ed! Actually I don't care how as it gave me another "Found It!" (a bit of a rarity today given that I've been staying with the car with the sleeping kids - at least until the cache has actually been found!)

Out in the Wairarapa with Etherlord and the Etherkids on day two of an Attack on Skindo's Translation Puzzles weekend. Looks like there are two enterances to this cache location, and as we have two extremely young Etherkids asleep in the back and didn't fancy a walk leaving them behind, we skipped the west entrance and had a look at the east one. There were fishermen there, and one said he often drives right to the confluence, so we decided to do the same, despite the electric fences suggesting we were entering farm land. Given the name of the cache I decided it would be really cool if the cache was... here... but couldn't find it. Etherlord checked the same place and promptly found it. And it was a large container! how did I miss it? [xx(]
This was a nice walk from the road for Netty and me. We believe we spotted a kotuku along the way. However, my subsequent internet enquiries suggest that such birds are only found in Westland. The images seem to match though. Maybe somebody who is knowledgeable in this field can suggest what it may have been.
We had no problem finding the hint item but the cache was a different story. Maybe I suffer from "Two litre containers are easy to find" syndrome. Anyway, Netty found what we were after when searching in a spot that I had already covered .

Managed to check this one today and all is well, cache is in place and dry. Follow the hint and its not difficult to find.
We finally had the time to go and check on this, but would you believe it the road was closed for some motorbike time trials and we were unable to access the area, so will have to wait until next time.
Note of the various cachers who have logged the nearby barrage gates since march none have recorded this one. I think its been muggled
Drove to this one - a bit lazy really. Interesting to see the confluence though. Had a hard time locating the cache, it was only when Mr TT got his stick and tap tapped that we found it as it was well and truly buried. TFTC
Found this cache with Kiwi Explorer on a most enjoyable and productive three day caching raid in the Wairarapa. Apologies in advance for the rather template state of this log. We found over 200 caches in our visit which has left me with rather vague and blurred memories of some of them. Anything that really stood out will get a special mention. Indeed, mention that there was a confluence on the cache list had us both intrigued. Oh its that sort of confluence....TFTC, Biggles.
Found while touring the district with Biggles. Managed to get the rental car most of the way there before parking up and walking the rest. Nice area. Thanks.
Parked at the Barrage Gates and walked along the stopbank to the Ruamahana Confluence. Having recently walked along the same river in the Upper Ruamahanga river valley, it was interesting to see it here at this confluence. Thanks for giving us a reason to make this walk.

The gate leading to the stopbank "road" by the Barrage Gates was open, so we took the cross-country corona for a hoon. It didn't like the first lot of corrugations made by other vehicles in wet conditions, and when we got to the second lot of corrugations, we decided to park the car there and walk the rest of way.
We had just finished signing the log when several vehicles drove by behind us - aaah, that was the road we should have taken!

Found while out on another Skindo trail, needed a bit of a leg stretcher so carried on to find this one, no mud today, all good.

Decided that it was time to do this cache as I was here earlier in the year, but really didn't have the correct footwear to do the cache that time, arriving at the carpark near GZ and wearing my tramping boots I decided that it was time to attempt this one, after a quick walk arrived at GZ and found the cache in the first spot that I looked, what a nice spot for a cache, bit of a pain having to walk though all the mud to get to GZ, but that's caching, thanks for bringing me here, TFTC TNLNSL (3296)
Doing cache raid round Lake Wairarapa today like the walk out to GZ we got wet getting back to the van jr taybee found it TFTC
When I first saw confluence in the title, I thought this may have been a degree confluence cache Alas no. Still, drove the rental 2WD all the way to GZ, had a chat witha couple of bird shooters heading out, and then had an easy find. Nice spot. Cheers Gav [7866]
Last cache of the day - a nice walk as the drizzle started. Thanks for giving us an excuse to visit this spot.
Nice short walk to the cache, though it was very hot here this afternoon. Cache was quickly located and logged.

Found while out for a days caching in South Wairarapa, TFTC. Would have been a great spot for our lunch but the wind was a little too strong today!
Found during the great Wairarapa weekend cacheathon. Enjoying the wonderful Wairarapa again, a fantastic time, so thanks for bringing us here.
Cache find was straight forward, and cache all in order; rehidden safely as found after signing the log.

A quick find on a day's cache hunting in the Wairarapa with CrystalFairy. We were able to drive right to the cache site, the ground was fairly dry. Signed log, TFTC
Don't think the campervan would have made it down that track!! I walked with my boots - should have added a GUM in front of the footwear. Certainly was a mud bog. Soon at cache site and cache found fairly exposed. Left with a little more natural cover. All good fun really. SL TFTC
All ready to drive to cache when I noticed this part " if you find the right gate you can drive to the cache", , yeah right, it's still winter and no car or 4X4 would love that road, so we walked and skidded ect in our gummy's to this cache, , TFTC
I parked up and consulted the GPS only 500m as the crow flies. Headed off on what turned in to a mud run. Quite fun really, driving down the track would not be advisable. Cache was easy to find with no prickles to contend with. Found this one with Brownie who enjoyed checking out the contents of the cache. TNLN SL TFTC
Drove to almost the cache.. But was not impressed by the stuff at the location.. Before I even started looking the barbed wire (rusted) caught my hand and then the dead and dry gorse on the cache... Lovely area, but walked away with a few scars...
Abit of a careful walk to dodge the mud spots. Ground not OK to drive on today. Nice to read about the river diversion scheme completed near by. TFTC.
Managed to get past the cache guard of dried gorse. Contrasting colour of the two waterways.
Thanks

2nd cache of the morning ,nice walk on a cool morning, interesting piece of history ,bit muddy under foot but had boots on so didnt really matter, nice easy find

I am sure I had the wrong gate. We were driving in the right direction but ended up stopping in the middle of a paddock. Walked the last 300m and found the cache very easily. Then I noticed that there were tracks on the same side of the fence, so I guess they led to the correct gate. Nonetheless - found. TFTC.
Found the correct gate so we could drive all the way to the cache site. Note to future finders, the closest gate is probably not the best one as that track looks pretty rough - there's another gate to the north. Nice remote spot. Dropped a TB. TFTC!!!
We thought we'd have a look for this one on our way back from Lake Ferry to Martinborough. Pouawha Road had a no exit sign, but we thought we'd have a look down there anyway, as that had been our planned route to the cache.
We think we missed the turn to Kumenga Road. Due to lack of time we decided not to explore further.
We think we missed the turn to Kumenga Road. Due to lack of time we decided not to explore further.
We found the right gate, after paying too close attention to the instructions in the GPSr and overshooting (the GPSr had encountered a problem it couldn't tell us about, namely, it had no more roads!). However, the discovery of the right gate was only a little bit of help, because it was WAAAY too muddy for the car ... and even almost too muddy for shank's pony. By carefully negotiating the more treacherous patches I made my way along the levee bank to GZ, where it was an easy find of a nice big cache. The pale pink sky was reflected in the river as I returned in the dusk light, and this added to my enjoyment of the walk. Thanks, J 'N' K.
We obviously found the right gate, as we drove right to the cache. Couldn't have done this if it was wet, as it looks as if it has recently been bulldozed. TFTC
