How did I not know about all of these plaques and memorial signs here?! Such a cool place, and some pretty crucial history here for the early development of the capital. It was all happening here too when I ran around to the different waypoints. A van full of tourists pulled up the same time I did to walk through the park, then an AFP car parked right behind me but sped away as I returned from ground zero.Signed and replaced as foundthanks!
Found while attending the Mega event in Canberra over Easter. The trip bit.Easter geocaching festival of twenty twenty four. This time it is the turn of Oz Mega GeoBash MEGA event in the nation's capital. It is time for a road trip across country to Canberra in the Sporty Pajero Sports. Freddo and Gridge98 traveling from Adelaide via a strange inland route that takes in scenic rural locations, dusty roads, punctured tyres, overheating batteries, various tools of the trade, special campgrounds, and lots scope for many many geocaching finds. Along the way we saw running emus, jumping kangaroos, wandering deer, dead foxes, herds of wooly sheep and stray steers.Arriving in Canberra we met our colleagues e.gregory1, featherwaite, team walron, courtney rose, davidwazza, e_smilie, and georode, signing as ABP, plus a huge group of other like minded excited mega geocachers attending event after event, and more events.Day one. Somebody moved the goal posts. So many caches to find. So many caches to log. We find them, sign them and replace them. This particular geocache was found using one of the following GPS enabled devices, Garmin GPSr, Montana 680t, Oregon 650 or Dakota 20 and an Apple iPhone 11 using the marvelous Cachly app. Waypoints and paperless geocaching were downloaded via GSAK 9. Log prepared, checked and submitted using GSAK publish logs macro.Warning, this hobby can be addictive. It can lead to exercise, meeting new people and finding interesting places you might not have known existed otherwise. Beware: you may have fun. Apologies for the generic part of the cache log. Out and about again, headed over to Sydney early in the morning, grabbed a hire car and got some local hides before driving to Canberra for the MEGA. Super excited my first MEGA and heading over with 2 others from the Cockburn Crew - signed log as WAC to save time. This is 14151, hoping to clock over the 15,000 finds in the week in New South Wales and ACT.Thanks to Captain Tomato for the caches we found.********** ********** ********** ********** ********** **********OZMEGA2024 OZMEGA2024 OZMEGA2024 OZMEGA2024 OZMEGA2024 OZMEGA2024********** ********** ********** ********** ********** **********Head over to Australian Capital Territory for Capital GeoBash MEGA - Canberras first ever Mega Event. Exciting times over the next couple of weeks as we takeoff for the Capital GeoBash in Canberra! Its going to be a flood of Sandgropers over east, with a host of West Aussies making the trek east for the event. Im travelling with fellow Cockburn Crew members Leg5 and Barnzy12, starting in Sydney and hitting the road to Canberra, before returning back to Sydney. Honourary mention to our fellow member, Cravo10, who couldnt make it after recently introducing a new geocacher to the world the week prior. Once in Canberra, the agenda is set, well team up with a host of Western Australians to conquer caches. Collectively, were hoping to make it the biggest ever weekend for cache finding. Following the event, the journey continues back to Sydney, with a mission to clean up caches and new Local Government Areas (LGAs), ensuring no cache is left unturned in this epic geocaching adventure. Something tells me that well need a holiday after this, well, holiday. All logs have been signed as WAC to save space, abbreviation for Western Australia Crew. Cheers Captain Tomato! Join us in Augusta, in Western Australias South West, for WA Goes Big 2024 (GCAGV8Y) on Friday 20 to Sunday 22 September. Log your will attend now!
Since I'm in Canberra for Mega, I've enjoyed seeing many places as well as the warm weather. Here's one to find today.Thank you for placing the cache ?? Captain Tomato.
Found during the Mega event. The Farmers 5, thank you so much for placing it for everyone to enjoy and highlighting this area. ??
Cockburn Crew on tour to the Canberra Mega. Day 1 involved a bunch of caching around Sydney before making our way to Canberra for the Capital Geobash. We found a huge variety of caches, and its great to cache in new territory that we havent explored much in the past. Unlike our home state of Western Australia where we have found just about anything and everything.A beautiful day with great weather and even better company. Thank you to the local COs for a great day in and around this great country of ours.
Out exploring with WACrew, signing WAC, while we are visiting for the mega. Another big day today. Thanks for the hide.
Day 2 of my Canberra Mega adventure. Out caching this evening with Geotrakka before and after a nearby event . Very happy to claim a smiley here . Some logs signed as N2O or WA6This is my 12614 find Thankyou Captain Tomatofor placing and maintaining this cache.
A nice historically themed multi that brings attention to some unusual but intriguing artefacts.Impressive how a whole suburb could just vanish! At least it has been replaced with some nice nature to amble through. Thanks for bringing us here and the multi --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In the spirit of reconciliation we would like to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of country on which we geocache throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We (the pants people) pay our respects to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.
I had my car in for a service in Phillip today, so had completed my journey to work on my electric scooter. On the return journey, I detoured to finally check out this multi.
All figures were readily identified, and once the math was done, I headed off to make the find.

#3160 An interesting piece of Canberra history. We had collected the data some time ago and chose to return this afternoon to find the physical. Thanks for the multi Captain Tomato.
Cold, windy day. Worth the effort, interesting bit of canberra history. TFTC
I had to come here several times as I ran out of time or it was raining or something. Finally collected the last bit of information, though that again was hairy as a sizable pod o male Kangaroos were lounging around WP2.
Tonight I came back after work to sign the log.
Such interesting history. There are more traces further in the reserve.

A beautiful location, especially in spring with a nearby with a meadow of Hoary Sunrays! I had completed the leg work for this multi a few weeks ago, when I came to WP1 for a Adventure Lab. I took home the information, worked out the co-ords for GZ, and decided to come back when I was comfortable finding physical caches again. Well, I've been back finding physicals again for a few weeks, and decided to ride my bike out to here. The ride up the Forster Crescent was a struggle, but it was easier than the last time I attempted it! I soon had the cache in hand, in a perfect spot. After a bit of a wander to look at some flowers, I headed home while the sun was still up. Thanks for bringing me to this beautiful area Secret Squirrel BJC, and a massive thank you to Captain Tomato for keeping this oldie alive and in good condition!
Had these 4 caches solved for a while so headed out to collect them.

This one took us longer than it should but was well worth the user error. Fascinating past and spit of Canberra.TFTC
This was so fun! I found the answers to the clues last week and then explored all around the tracks on the hill and in the bush, its a beautiful green space, very quiet. Then came back today and sat down to plug in the final coordinates, only for them to end up being right where I was sitting! So that was a funny and quick find. Off to explore more now! Thanks for the cache!
Great multi, very interesting history! Found the info with no problems and made a straightforward find at GZ. Thanks for this mini adventure!
Out early this morning as I am supposed to be packing the van. However I needed a multi and a mystery to fill dates on the calendar so as I already had some of the required information I decided to finish this one off. Armed with the new coordinates I wandered along to GZ where i found the cache sitting quite exposed, so after signing the log I replaced it and camouflaged it so it wasn't obvious to the many muggles who walk along this track. Thanks for keeping this cache alive Captain Tomato. SL
Very interesting spot that I've been meaning to explore for ages now so today was the day that I got there. Nice multi and straightforward find. Tftc
After lunch at Snapper, a little stroll was in order, and this nice little multi beckoned. Have walked around here before, and read the history, but it was nice to revisit, and see the work being done to weed clear the landscape. Gathered the required information, and retraced our steps back to the Yacht club, picking up the cache on the way. Hopefully the cache will stay in place, as it is precariously perched.. packed in a bit more natural camo around. TFTC SS-BJC and Captain Tomato
This is one of those multis that I have looked at frequently and kept saying "I must do that multi" and yep, it never gets done... Well this evening I decided to do the Adventure Lab "Canberra - East vs West" and what do you know, it starts off at this multi! So tonight, I had no excuse haha. I wandered around the waypoints collecting the required information and taking some snapshots of the area. I had the company of a rather large mob of roos who were keeping a close eye on my movements. Unfortunately they were scared off by a muggle walking past with their doggy.
Calculated the GZ using the WP information and wandered to calculated GZ. I found the cache on the ground and fully exposed... being so close to the walking track, I am surprised it had not been taken... Once I signed the log book, I replaced the cache and gave it some natural camo to prevent muggle walkers/runners for seeing it.
Thanks for the cool little history lesson of this location SecretSquirrel-BJC and thanks for keeping it active and maintaining it Captain Tomato

As part of our exercise program we picked a group of caches that would give the two of us a good continuous walk over a few hours. With one of us living in Yarralumla it was an obvious place to start and finish - all at 2m apart. Meeting my GeoPartner in their home suburb we picked on three multi-caches nearby starting with 'Art for arts ...', then the 'Vanished Suburb' and finished with Yarralumla Wander'. We walked for 3hrs covering 7.54kms and just 99m of ascent/descent.
A fun cache in an area we have walked throughout many times before but it always looks different each time we come. Today was no different seeing the extensive work that has been carried out here to replant and weed including large areas of blackberries in and around old infrastructure. Saw large groups of kangaroos bounding past us clearly spooked by something up on the ridge. The possum was not home today but the kangaroos made up for that missing event. We found the cache out in the open but it did line up with the hint. We hid the cache back at the tree up just off the ground to keep the container dry. All the data was easy to find and great to see the history in this location. Very quick and easy find. TFTC Captain Tomato .

Canberra Day 3: Lake Burley Griffin West Loop
Headed out today for another bike ride to find yet more caches in Canberra. The target was the far out AL waypoints and all the little Parks along the way. The ride went swimmingly with a lot of lovely vistas and views of the lake along the way, though slowly but surely, the midday heat started taking its toll. Huffed and puffed up to the National Arboretum visitor centre for lunch, and headed back down to finish off the rest of the circuit. It has been one tiring day, but generally very productive throughout.
This is the specific log for this cache:
Looking at the site today, I would not have expected that there were once people here. I suppose that his planned cities work, the best laid cities plans of mice and men.. Anyway, after struggling on the uphill track with my bike from the lakeshore, this cache was found. TFTC!

Nice fast find with Joolay, K8tybee and Gliss! Such an interesting area to come and visit. I hadn’t heard of its history before. We all posed like tired hikers whilst the muggles walked past lol. A lovely start to our little out door adventure. Just the way I like to spend an afternoon TFTC
Found with Nibletricecakes, k8tybee & Joolay while we continue our streak. Ann Gugler's book. Canberra history is facinating. TFTC
Wow have not been here before and what an interesting area. Its amazing what is in our own back yard hidden behind trees. Thanks for keeping this going. Will contact you about GZ as a tree has come down. Otherwise cache in good condition. TFTC
Wanting to complete the new lab caches in Canberra, I headed to the area. Whilst completing them, I looked for some nearby caches. Always liking multi’s, this one was a must do! Thanks for placing the cache SecretSquirrel-BJC (adopted by Captain Tomato).
What a lovely day. I was near here a couple of days ago for "Regatta", and, while logging it, I noticed this cache. I read the description and found it interesting, so today I'm back here looking for it. This looks a bit like an archeologist's paradise around here. I found the waypoints and the cache, then had a bit of a wander. Thanks for this one, I like it. Have a favorite point.
Had the day off for an appt then the day was mine. I decided to target as many multi's as I could. Ended up with 8 out of 11 attempted.
What an amazing area! Really hope to come back here another time. Today I had a muggle near WP3 using goggles to watch what I eventually worked out to be a drone. I think I spooked him a bit when I rustled through the tree behind him. Quick find at GZ.

TFTC! I hadn't planned to do this one, but when I read about suburban history it piqued my interest.
This cache gets a favourite for me for being a fantastic combination of history and adventure - with a great puzzle, too.
After getting the waypoints out of order in the first instance, I managed to figure out where I had gone wrong and make the find shortly thereafter.

This wasn't originally part of today's plan but once I'd collected the first clue, I was soon following the interesting story and on my way to a GZ. Thankfully the cache presented quite quickly and I was finally signing the log at 14:20.

Interesting note in our history, I wonder why the suburb was then removed... maybe as it was too close to what was going to be earmarked as a 'premier' suburb. There was a huge mob of roo's at GZ that I didnt notice until I was literally in the middle of them.... not a good place to find yourself at the best of times
On a crisp and lovely morning, I was on my way to secure a puzzle cache (which was close by to my hotel) when I spied this little gem on my path. Loved reading the signs and playing hide and seek with a couple of dozen kangas. All good with GC. TFTC

The Reluctant Geospouse has agreed to come caching with me for the morning for my birthday. The deal is to take both the geohounds on a multi meander and pick up some others on the way.
This was a slight detour from the main goal for today but it was well worth it. Yarralumla has always been the location for an interesting mix of histories. With established houses from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. We really enjoyed exploring the area. Thanks for the cache Secret Squirrel-BJC and Captain Tomato
Oh and hang on the last person to sign was here today! That doesn't happen too often especially with a multi. We quickly scan the horizons for suspicious looking characters but don't spot any other cachers.

I needed to grab a multi in ACT to help fulfill a challenge cache back home in Victoria. Easier said than done in ACT. I think the average multi has about 26 different WPs in this place. Luckily my host for the weekend was able to point out this really nice, very enjoyable and informative multi for me to grab on our way to other adventures. Thanks so much for this lovely cache!
Out with Aquilus1 after a GC Anonymous monthly meeting, so of course we had to catch a few smileys. Easy multi, straight forward questions and interesting history. I never knew any of this was here! We came the direct path to GZ without any problems. Tftc!!!
Out with dty73 and had a few caches in mind in the area this being one of them. Nice straight forward multi, was a bit uncertain of some of the answers but went with them and it worked itself out for a straight forward set of coordinates. Took the direct path to the cache, good today but wouldn't recommend it other times! Thanks for the interesting cache in an area I haven't visited before!
Very interesting history. Being this close to the embassies, someone might wonder if this is a dead drop. Tftc
This was a really cool location and cache! I had no idea about the story behind this area, and was confused when I got close to GZ as to what I was looking for. But then I spotted the signs! They look a bit creepy and out of place....
Read the information, and was surprised about how big the families were. That is a lotttt of kids...
After visiting each sign/waypoint we did the maths and got a set of coords that looked viable.
We left it to last however and went over to get a few mystery's since we were closer to them On the way back to the car we visited GZ and made a quick find!
Thanks Captain Tomato for bringing me here, this cache is a good example of why geocaching exists and how it brings you to such unique and interesting places you would have never visited otherwise.

The things you learn geocaching. An amazing and little known piece of local history. I enjoyed looking at the information around the area and wondering what it used to be like. All the info was collected without any problems and it was a nice easy walk to GZ where the cache was found quickly. Thanks Captain Tomato
Walking geohound in the area today on a cool, but enjoyable Canberra morning. A bunch of community tree planters were in the vicinity. They had rather cold fingers, by the looks of it.
Collected the information from the various waypoints, did the calculations, wandered to GZ, found the log in good condition and signed. I enjoyed reading about the 'vanished' community - some of these families had an entire cricket team of children. Reminds me of Monty Python's "Meaning of Life". TFTC Captain Tomato

Oh my, we had no idea what wealth of beautiful birds you have here in your capital! We loved the multi, and were very distracted by all the parrots and cockatoos! Thanks for bringing us to this interesting place!
A very interesting spot and a very interesting multi. Thanks for bringing us here today Captain Tomato. Found this afternoon with Motndarg and Glanville Girls.
Such an interesting area. Hard to imagine what the area must have once looked like. Thanks for highlighting this piece of Canberra's history.
Had no idea about the history of this area, rather fascinating. We were able to find all the clues and worked out where GZ was. Signed and away, thanks.

I had originally been thinking of picking up the ACT 1000 Club series as my last 16 caches to reach 1000 myself, but the rain yesterday and predicted for today put the kibosh on those plans. Fortunately I'd been given another suggestion for my 1000th cache which turned out to be more practical to plan around. I picked up this cache as one of my fillers on my way to 1000.

Found it! Interesting history that we hadn't heard before. The plaques were a little creepy. We also found a cross out there for someone who died a few years ago.
Needed a little stroll tonight and this was perfect. Got a little spooked at first waking up to the plaques, but otherwise a fun little multi. Thanks!
Found with Elekra48 on a lunchtime escape from the office! It was a hot day today and so we focussed on a couple of caches nearby. This one fit the bill as it looked pretty short - and it was! Once we got the order of the waypoints sorted, it was a doddle An interesting insight in Canberra history and a short stroll. Cache and log all in good order. Thanks Captain Tomato!
I loved this one. I loved that it was a multi, that the way points were easy to find, and access. I loved that the calculations to find GZ made sense, and that the cache itself was an easy find (and was where it was meant to be) after a bit of a walk. I loved that I found it with AngelG27. I'm a bit disappointed that I didn't find it sooner (but that's my problem, I'll get over it soon enough). A favourite point from me. TFTC!
After grabbing dinner we headed over to explore this lovely part of Canberra. Lots of interesting history here, we enjoyed researching and learning about the area and finding images of what it was like in the good old days. Mr Stormcatcher had read some articles recently on Canberra's lost suburb so it was cool to finally check it out
. It was a pleasant evening stroll between waypoints but unfortunately did not see the possum. Cache was found safely tucked in and we threw our names on it. A great multi that took us back in time tonight, TFTC Captain Tomato

It was time to nab a cache for the day and I had this one on the radar. But a look out the window and on the BOM didn't look promising at all-a storm was rolling in! So that meant I was off outta work and into the car to get to this one before it hit
After parking the car near the listed coords, I was off to start gathering the info. What an interesting spot! I never knew that this place and its history was here! Thanks to geocaching I am always learning something new about Canberra and all of the other places it takes me
I went from waypoint to waypoint gathering the info and just as I was working out GZ it started to drizzle...and was getting heavier! Luckily GZ wasn't too far away! TNLNSL and then I hurried back to my car to escape the downpour!
Thanks for this neat little multi, Captain Tomato-fave from me added as well

#2600 - 07:05; I was out early having dropped a mate at work so I could borrow his ute. It was a waste of time to go home only to turn around and come back into the City, so I decided to see if I could grab a couple of multi's. I had found one and headed over to this one to try for a second. I must admit I've driven past this area many times without stopping for a look and didn't realise the welth of information about this now defunct suburb from the early years of Canberra's history. I enjoyed the wander around to gather the information and read a bit of the history, before sitting down and doing the calculations, which led me to GZ for a quick find. A nice cache to mark the 2600 finds milestone! TFTC Captain Tomato
On my way through following a drain cache. I had to stop by and do this as well. In all the time i lived in Canberra I've never been i here. The things you miss.....
Very interesting piece of history. To see how the workers lived and to understand how they where put out of view. (of any thing important).
I bet it was a lively place. Lots of noisy children. gossiping mothers, boisterous and butch dads and all the smell and grime of a makeshift town.
Pity they don't build suburbs like this in Canberra anymore.
Thanks for the insight into this really interesting place.

When I lived in Deakin a number of years ago, I would ride my bicycle this way headed to the lake bike path and then onto work. Sometimes on the way home I would take a short walk through the native bushland beside the old Westlake area and look for orchids and other wild flowers. In those days it was possible to drive a car into Westlake, and in spring bulbs would bloom. I wonder if they still do?
I looked in a nearby tree hollow, but couldn't spy any possum. Maybe I checked the wrong hollow.
Thank you for bringing me back to see this area. A favourite from me. I took the TB 'Ned Kelly Penny'. TFTC Captain Tomato.

Found whilst riding around the lake on a nice Canberra winter day. Never new this area existed! TFTC.
Came to see evidence of the vanishing suburb and thanks to Captain Tomato's precise instructions it was found. Had a very relaxing and solo walk across the central part of town ( well that's how it looked anyway). I wasn't tall enough to say a quiet hello to the possum at WP2, but I did wave g'day to a couple of roos!
Thanks for highlighting this important part of our history.
Cheers

What an absolutely fantastic and interesting cache. Throughly enjoyed the history and the waypoints.
Thanks SS and CT for a most enjoyable cache. Gets a Favourite from me,

off on a short romp about this area, first time visiting and have been meaning to for a while. I love how the original sign for the suburb is still up! the cords i found easy to follow....but still trying to figure out what that chimney-looking tower is that wreaks of sewage...once at GZ i had a pretty hard time, took a few minutes. thanks to the hint or i would have been stuck looking for a while.
managed to catch my first adult brown snake nearby one of the WP so be careful!!!! he was very out of it and didn't put up any fights. Still, dont do things like that unless you're an idiot *cough cough* Wish i had my camera!!! I need to get an internet SIM and download the caching app so i can have a GPS/camera in one, as i had left my phone in the car. Did manage to catch a blotched blue tongue right next to my car, though, and i brought him over and took some photos. He put up more of a fight then the brown!!!!
tftc and the wonderful experiences on the way to the cache, i'll be sure to mark this one as a favorite.

Found today with GrimRaider on a trip out out to do some cache maintenance. What great history in this place and we really enjoyed wandering around and checking out all the plaques. Graham's family have lived in Canberra for generations so we are always really interested to find out more about Canberra's early days. Very hot today but well worth the visit. Great cache - gets a FP from me
I'd visited this area previously in winter to find a couple of nearby caches. The lure of finding out a bit about Canberra's forgotten suburbs was too much on a lovely spring afternoon, so lurchergirl and I, accompanied by the whole Mack96 clan, wander around this area first.
The remanents of all the old gardens in spring were just beautiful. Sweet peas (my favourite flower) were in full bloom, along with a few others I couldn't identify. We peeked in the hollow at WP2 and found there was a new resident! Possum has moved on, and now there is a crimson rosella (sitting on eggs???) in there. Seeing the old foundations was great and also learning that there were so many houses here. It is sad to think that within another 20 years or so, there will be virtually no one who remembers the old places like this.
Many thanks for the little walk through history and the addition of another smiley.

The forecast rain stayed away so the geofamily, along with Sitehounder, took the geodogs for a wander in this vanished suburb. Hadn't heard about this so read the signs with interest - thanks for the fascinating cache location, Captain Tomato.
We did this cache some months ago, and have only now logged it, unaware that we hadn't done this.
We loved meandering and reading through snippets of information about this city's early settlers. Mr Domsky was sure he saw a thylacine while we were walking, and perhaps there are long-forgotten ghosts in this area.
Canberra may be a new city, however it is great to uncover and learn about our past.
Thanks for this cache.
A favourite from us.

What an interesting place. It is a shame there is very little remaining to indicate that there was ever anything here.
After doing the multi and locating the cache we wandered around looking at the numerous post with plaques. It's a shame that some of the plaques have gone missing. We even found a post and plaque quite a bit further East while looking for a waypoint for another cache. This one didn't seem to be associated with these plaques but I am sure it is.
At one plaque we found what appears to be the remnants of a storwater system.
There is so much to see here. It's not obvious but if you look it's there to see. It has me intrigued now and I want to know more. We will be back.
We didn't have any problems with the checksum and agree with the listed value of 57.
Thanks for bringing us to this fascinating spot.

My first multi. Delighted that it wasn't very hard and didn't take very long to complete. FYI, my checksum was 47 and it got me to the GZ. The wider bushland area is a great location to explore, with an interesting historical theme too. Left a TB geocoin behind. TFTC Cap'n.
