Although an amazing place to visit, archived as I don't feel that it's as educational as an Earthcache should ideally be, better suited to a traditional I think. Any logs beyond this date will be deleted.
We went for this cache after a night full of rain. The bedstream path was really hard to follow, but we managed to go through it with some river crossings !

Had an enjoyable walk up here today - a long time since we have been but the Pinnacles are still impressive. Very busy here today with lot of people coming and going. tftc
Very nice place! We did the whole hike. Both the river bed and the lookout are really worth it. The further drive to Cape Palliser was also amazing!
Found this one on a sunny day. Amazing landscape and an interesting hike through the river bed.

ADV, thanks for the geocache

Really interesting area. Walked out through the Pinnacles after a couple of days crossing the Aorangi range. Lots of people visiting here today. TFTC
Visited with a friend New Zealand for one month. We've rented a Campervan and went to the best places over the South and North -Island. The journey was without doubt the best holiday we ever had, we would be glad to visit the country again but being so far away it will need definitely a couple of years.
Follwed here the Path of Death to the pinnacles. A really impressive location, the atmosphere was indeed quite spooky because of thick clouds. Couldnt imagine a better movie set for that part of the story. Answers sent to owner.

Out with Loth making our way to Cape Palliser. Logged many caches on the way and we hiked through the Putangirua Pinnacle to see the paths of the dead. We also saw seals along the beach and rocks. Tftc!!
Damn. Left GPS in car Will have to come back another day. Met French and Italian visitors on our walk.
It was a nice day for a walk up to the Pinnacles. What amazing bit of natural landscaping that is going on here. Thanks for bringing me here.
Cheers for the cache.

I was in the area for a fishing competition that had been cancelled for the day due to high winds. Walked from nearby Te Kopi and up to the pinnacles. Very popular with lots of other people around. Logged with permission. Have been up here before, prior to this earth cache being created. Thanks for the exercise
We walked the riverbed path to GZ and studied the magnificient pinnacles. Paths to some sidetracks were quite steep. Wonderful place!

Wow, what a great walk this was. We started the trail along the dry riverbed and walked up all the way to the cachelocation and even further till the dead end. The way back we toot the trail along the lookout and we enjoyed the view from the other side. We were very much impressed by the view of the pinacles, thanx for placing an earthcache here. we sent the answers to CO and made a lot of pictures
EC#92. We have been meaning to do this for many years and finally got round to it today. A hot walk up but it started to cool down a little as the sea fog rolled in as we descended. Heard some crashing around in the bush too and thought it might have been a deer, but ended up being a lost man! He thought he was on the track to the lookout but had somehow misread the sign and went in totally the opposite direction. We soon put him right and he was on his way. This is always such a great place to visit and we were glad to be back here after so many years. Answers emailed to CO. TFTEC. fav point awarded
Weather was fine today and we stopped here for this cache. Not to know before what a beautiful place that will be.

During our New Zealand tour, we also wanted to visit some of the spots from Lord of the Rings. This spot was from the 3rd part, which is mentioned as path of the death.
Due to rain, we couldn't use the paths of the stream, therefore we took the alternative route up and down and up and down
Thanks for the earthcache and showing this place.

We had the Easter weekend away staying at the nearby Te Kopi DoC accommodation.
Couldn't pass up the chance to visit the pinnacles as it had been about 23 years since my last visit !
After walking right up to the end we headed back to the turn off, up to the viewing area and then further up the hill and back down the other side to Te Kopi.
Excellent walk, and thanks ADV for the Geocache.

18237 km from home we did the walk while our holidays. From the camp to the lockout and then we went down to the base, back along the stream bed. What a great, amazing tour!

What an amazing place! The story behind the Pinnacles was very interesting; quite an incredible piece of geology. This was a family trip - the first time for each of us. It was really windy at the bottom, and we weren't sure what it was going to be like further up, but it simply got better as we went up the stream bed. Mrs Wicm was expecting one or two pinnacles, like we see in the photos, but standing in the middle with pinnacles all around blew her away. We spent a very long time hanging around and exploring many of the little gullies! And will have to get the LoTR down from the shelf and watch it again!
Haven't got the photos off the camera yet, but if there are any interesting ones will upload them.

I love this location, I have great memories of camping here as a kid. Great to now be able to do a cache here!
All it took was a quick sprint up the valley while the others were doing the loop walk.
Earthcaches are a good solution to high muggle areas, taking selfies doesn't look nearly as suspicious as rumaging in the bushes!

I had my mind set on doing this back in August to get “The Nature Lover” souvenir as part of that months caching challenge. But I came to the decision that at that time it was probably a bit beyond what I was capable of. So I was good to have another incentive to get me here.
No problems today. I enjoyed an easy walk up to the Pinnacles this morning. It was great to come back to a place I can remember visiting as a youngster, and a place I brought my own kids to some years back. Still an awesome place to visit. A Favourite point for lots of good memories. Cheers and TFTC

Sorry for delayed log of your cache. I was long time on the way and without good conection to the internet. Thanks for nice cache on good spot.
This was an awesome journey. after spending the night at the campground, we went for the walk among the pinnacles. The landscape was incredible and the place is maybe one of the best we saw in New Zealand. We went to the lookout and after went back to Wellington.
Thanks for the cache in this awesome place.

First came up here a little over a hear ago. Next time was just after Christmas. Had some visitors to NZ so had to trek out again - couldn't let them visit our country without seeing THESE.....
Lovely day for a walk to see the Pinnacles. Great place. We enjoy the views. A favo from me.

What a fantastic place - the highlight of our Sth Wairarapa geocaching expedition. We took the bush walk that branches off early along the stream bed way, and followed that up the ridge to the lookout above the pinnacles. This is well worth the visit as it gives a great view. We then took the steep descent track down to the stream bed and walked on up to the base of the pinnacles for more awesome viewing and answering the earthcache questions. We followed the stream back down to the carpark. We found this a really good overall route, not too strenuous and giving a full experience of the area. It took us about 3 hours including plenty of viewing stops and a lunch break. Thanks for encouraging us to come here. Gets a favourite.
Came here on my way home from camping in Ngawi with mttomatoking, awesome place and my first earth cache, thanks for bringing us here.
Did this with WaffleKitties. Just another place I would not have known about if not for Geocaching! Awesome
That place is fantastic, nearly unbelievable!!! At first we went to the lookout. After that we decided to go to the base of the pinnacles. We have seen a lot of places around the North Island, but this is totally different. Thank you so much for showing us this lovely place. It is absolutely worth it going there. A Fav-Point is for sure.

Well worth the walk in to view this earth cache. Allow plenty of time and include the walk up to the lookout for great views of this area. Thanks for taking us to such an interesting spot. Visited with edvern and Tramper Ted on geocaching weekend in Palliser Bay.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit here and walked around the loop track to the lookout as well. This is a marvellous place and so unique to the south coast. Well worth an Earth Cache! Logged with permission. TFTC
Wow amazing place. Far better than pictures can describe. I didn't think much of the place walking in, then suddenly I was SORROUNDED BY AWESOME!
Highly recommend going up the lookout (see picture), it's a grueling climb but so beautiful.

This was the most impressive LOTR movie set, we visited. Almost everything is still intact . If we had visited this place at night, it would have been the scary Dimholt as in the movie. Nevertheless, it was very impressive and we really enjoyed it to be here. Thanks for bringing us to this place!
Stayed in a bach near Ngawi for the weekend and decided to do this lovely walk before heading home. We came up this way a few years ago and noticed a huge difference walking up the valley this time. A lot more undergrowth, sometimes up over our heads with just a narrow pathway through. Mainly gorse, buddlleia and toi toi. Reading the previous logs made me chuckle. One member mentioned seeing people walking in less than appropriate footwear... when we had got a few hundred metres up the valley I turned and noticed 2 of the younger members were wearing jandals, despite there being walking boots and trainers in the car! Still, there was no moaning whatsoever and all of us enjoyed the walk at a leisurely pace. I wasn't sure how far I would be able walk having twisted both ankles the previous day attempting the Matakitakiakupe cache... but thick socks and walking boots done up tightly did the trick. We weren't sure of the answer to the erosion question, and couldn't work out how to get the altitude on my iPhone but logging with permission. TFTC!
Stayed at the camp site Fri/Sat nights.
On Fri my batteries were flat for the GPS but walked up the river bed anyway. it was really hot and after taking a trip up a side gully to look at the formations I decided to leave the rest of the trip until when it was cooler.
On Sat afternoon, once I had sorted out the batteries i set off for the Pinnacles, once again heading up the river bed. Finally made it to the spot but GPS was a bit off cause the GZ according to me was up a very steep bank. Enjoyed the area, although not that familiar with LOTR scenery.
Walked back via the lookout for somemore interesting views.
Logging with permission - Thanks

Hiked up to the spot, keeping "My Precious"TB safe. Awesome place, lost the back of GPS and battery on the way up so it didnt work but found the spot on iPad (1) which doesnt give the elevation. Taking "Precious" to LOTR film sites and will post pictures when home. Luckily we stumbled on the lost GPS part on our way back down (I was amazed to find it!) although not the battery so we still had no GPS for our caching today. (Logged with permission)

Really enjoyed the walk up to the Pinnacles. Have been wanting to do this for a while, so this was the main purpose of my geocaching trip today. Saw a few people on the way there, and again on the way back (some i think may even have been geocachers), but had the whole spectacular main pinnacle area to myself when i was at GZ. Just fantastic!
Explored a bit further up the gorge, until i got to a point where i was reminded of the film '128 hours' and the fact i was on my own ... and no-one really knew exactly where i was. Started to take a lot more care.

This was the focal point of today's caching adventures for Netty and me. It was a glorious day but I wouldn't have wanted it to be much hotter.
It had been five or six years since our last visit so it was good to return and be able to pick up a cache find as part of the journey. TFTC.

Logged with permission. Stayed overnight in the Pinnacles campsite and got up early to do the walk. Last visited here 3 years ago. It seems to us that the gorse and other woody weeds that abound have grown a lot in those few years. The DOC website states "Weed-free fodder was fed to horses used in the Lord of the Rings before they were filmed at the Putangirua Pinnacles. The risk of introducing weeds was addressed through a condition in filming consents required horses to be fed products that could not regrow and were free of seed. The production company also ensured the horses came from gorse and broom-free stables. After the horses had been walked through the reserve to be filmed from a helicopter, their hoof prints were raked over to avoid any impact on the ground." Why DOC made the LOR film crew go to all that trouble to keep out weeds that were all around and were taking over the area anyway beats me! Luckily when we walk up there we are NOT obliged to wipe away our footprints afterwards either .
Photo opportunities are definitely better when the sun is higher, as it was on our previous visit. Everyone who can manage it should visit this fascinating geological site at least once: thanks for putting this Earthcache together to help encourage that and for all the information that you have provided. This was out first Earthcache.

This was one of the planned highlights of our 1-Week-Wellington-Area-Holiday - The "Lord of the Rings" Path of the Dead. What a wonderful place this is. Magic, eerie, impressive, intimidating, energising. Although some formations look like a city, we love it much more since everything is purely natural.

After having collected all the catches between Martinborough ,Lake Ferry and Cape Palliser went to this one using coords that had hand loaded into my old garmin 12 before leaving home. Arrived at gz and spent some time searching for cache having to give up when none was found. Only on getting home and checking cache details discovered it was a virtual cache and other info was required. Bugger.
I will have to go back and get the info required.

Will send answers to owner shortly. Did this with Mycro Man on my back all the way up the riverbed. Quite a slog the last 500m. Had to cross the stream at least 5 or 6 times to make it there. Was very busy with lots of people around at 2pm. Reminded us of the Clay Cliff of Omerama but not quite as many and frequency of them, but still very impressive. Photograph attached as well. Thanks for the cache and a great end to todays caching.
Find #1154, on a brilliant day around the south Wairarapa coast, we decided to leave the 'best for last' so to speak and head to Cape Palliser first before visiting the pinnacles. We arrived back to the Pinnacles entrance in the afternoon, and it was definitely a busy place! We quickly began walking under the summer heat up-river, meeting only the odd tourist and visitor along the way. We soon passed the turn in the river and began uphill, - no water flowing today, but certainly evidence that a raging torrent had come through in the past!
We soon arrived at GZ and began to scan around and accumulate answers to the questions, before continuing to head on uphill to the feet of the pinnacles - very amazing geology and a truly fascinating place (despite being slightly claustrophobic in some of the more tighter locations!). Thankfully we were the only people up at the site when we visited, which at times meant no noise, and you could actually hear small pieces of the pinnacles disintegrating off and falling to the ground; which just goes to show how volatile and changeable the area is!
Just as we started the trek back down the river a whole bunch of groups appeared - good timing! A truly spectacular and unique location which is up with some of the best Earthcache's we've ever done, thanks. SL TFTC.

Visited the Pinnacles on a day trip to South Wairarapa and Cape Palliser. We have been meaning to come here for some time since we found out it was a Lord of the Rings setting. Regardless of what was filmed here it is an amazing place in its own right. We really enjoyed ourselves here. Thanks for the opportunity to log our first Earthcache!

Wow, this was an awesome introduction to caching for me! While holidaying in Wellington with my sister and bro-in-law jillopy&return2nai, they took me on some easy ones, then threw this into the mix. Was a fair trek for unfit me, but we successfully found it...back on 8 January 2010... I got my geocaching membership when I returned hom, but forgot to log this one... Thankfully we'd taken photos and I'd noted the answers, so am logging it now - cache-owner has given permission, many thanks!
Last time I visited the Pinnacles must have been about 15 years ago, so good to have an incentive for repeat visit to this interesting area. Made my trek between showers and after a couple of days rain, so a bit of stream hopping required - but on the bright side - at least the rain dampened down the dirt roads.
It was interesting to note that the cliffs at Ocean Beach have the same composition as this area, but either pinnacles have not formed there, or the sea action erodes the bases away too fast.
Thanks for an interesing EC. Logged with permission.

After staying at the DOC Campsite we went for a walk to the Pinnacles. Had to jump accross the river a few times to get there since it had been raining quite a lot. The Pinnacles were really special never seen anything like it before. Also walked to the look out to get a nice view over them. Really enjoyed it!

Logged with permission. A wonderful walk up to the lookout followed by a wander up the stream to the 'spot'. GPS (phone) struggling a little with the cliffs, and the kids were getting weary, but a wonderful walk and a highlight of our trip. My last visit here was about 30 years ago. Great to be bringing my own kids, and an excellent excuse in caching. TFTC!
Yay! Our 10th Earth Cache. Was saving this one for the big one zero. Having been to the Pinnacles Desert in Western Australia first, we talked a lot about this one, comparing the two very different kind of pinnacles. Great to have this LOTR Wonder in our own backyard and we really enjoyed the visit and admiring all the pinnacles. Thanks ADV for permission to log this great earthcache!

Thanks for allowing me to log this one. Really enjoyed my visit to this area. The Pinnacles are really nice. We camped at the DOC campsite at the start of the walk, so we could do this cache early in the morning. Afterwards we went onwards to Cape palliser. I hope to visit this place again in April/May so I can show it to my sister who's coming to visit me in New Zealand.

Logged with permission. Had a day out caching in South Wairarapa with friends and this and the cache at Cape Palliser were my targets for the day. Have heard about this place but never been here - we were amazed at beauty of these things and had a great fun observing thins as we walked up the riverbed. Great to also see so many people getting out and enjoying it. TFTEC
Email sent. Had a great time wandering through the stream bed - stream is very low - on our way up to the pinnacles. Decided that although they are very solid (we did throw a couple of stones!) we still weren't keen to walk in amongst them. Petrified wood, fossils, pinnacles - a geologists paradise! A fantastic spot - and as per the photo, I found it EXACTLY!. TFTEC.
This was our first visit to the Pinnacles and we enjoyed a fine, warm day. We spent over two hours all up, including taking photos, pondering ADV's geological question and walking up to the lookout. On the way up we were thrilled to watch a shining cuckoo close up as it sang its distinctive call from a low tree quite near us. Logged with permission. Thanks ADV for setting up this earthcache - it is a unique area to visit.
Logged with permission. Walked to the Pinnacles on a lovely warm day. Fascinating spot. Some similarities to Cappadoccia, Clay Cliffs at Omarama, the Organs on the Mohaka river. Thanks for the effort put into setting this cache.

# 218 T4TC Did this cache a while ago on a caching weekend which hooked me on to geocaching. I am logging this with permission. If you go and do this earth cache it is well worth the trip. This was the decieding cache that made me join as some of the caches we go to visit most of us didn't or wont know it exsisted. What a great way to see not only our country but the world.
Logged with permission. Area has suffered badly from recent flooding - NO tracks left. Bush / Loop tracks washed away, Riverbed track about 80% gone. Area of co-ords a huge slip. Several other mud slides. Very tough to get to pinnacles with about 15 stream crossings required at the moment, and heaps of rock hopping. HOWEVER can still be done and a stunning and unusual site well worth the effort to get to. Am sure tracks will be restored soon. Thanks enjoyed my visit to the site.

My wife and I are obviously not geologists as we couldnt see any difference in the features from this spot, Im assuming that we were at the right spot because our gps told us that we were at between 0 meters and minus 10meters altitude ! Obviously this reading was seriously wrong as our legs told us that we had climbed quite high ! TFTC
[282] Spent the afternoon wandering around this amazing landscape, and imaging being in the LoTR filmset - The kids enjoyed looking for fossil seashells and petrified wood, and the pinnacles at the published co-ords were just awesome! One word of caution: beware the "quicksand" in places - I put my foot in it and have a mud-encased shoe to clean as a result (see photo)
Emailed answers to ADV. The views here were GREAT! I can see why they used it in LOTR... it's absolutely amazing! TFTC!
Logged with permission. My first EarthCache woohooo!
Thankyou ADV I had heard of the Pinnacles over (mumble) 25 years ago. I had always wanted to see them and if it had not been for your earthcache I don't believe I would have done this. Geocaching rocks!
Things I have learnt a GPS measures as the crow flies. Good lesson, can't think of a better place to learn it. This is an amazing place to visit and I am sooo happy I have done it.

#365. Logged with permission. WOW! What a humbling location. It is amazing to find such a unique area. I kept waiting for the pinnacles to topple down given that they are effectively just enormous piles of gravel. We went through the bush walk track on the way in (lots of steps for those that love stair-climbing). The bonus of this path is that the lookout over the pinnacles is on the way - with great views from here.
Once you get close up though, the pinnacles are even more amazing to see. We had a good hunt around and more than a few photos.
The return trip was via the stream bed and was a much easier walk down. We went fossil hunting on the way back and found some petrified bark, petrified wood, and various fossil shells embedded in stone - no dinosaurs though . The kids loved doing this and have a lot to talk about during 'news time' back at school.
Thanks for bringing us to such a fabulous location. One of the most memorable caches we have done.

Visited the pinnacles while spending the weekend at Te Kopi Lodge to celebrate a wedding late last year. What a neat spot!
We visited this awesome location [^].

Email to ADV sent. What an amazing place! (I have to confess I haven't seen Lord of the Rings, much to husband return2nai's disgust!) but I was just as intrigued with the features. Thanks so much for bringing us here - another place we wouldn't have known about if not for caching.
Email sent.
Wow - now this is a true Earthcache - one very special place.
Walked the gentle route along the riverbed past scree, and high canyon sides. Turned at the fork and headed to this special spot.
Spied many different items - split rocks (with smooth faces), fossils in rocks, gravel, very fine silt, quartz, clumps of gravel in silt etc....
A wonderful start to our day, as we were along here, apart from the birds.
Eventually had to return, and met many hiking groups just before the car park. All asking us about the hike. Thanks Neil - excellent EC!

Blisteringly hot up here, and a few partygoers struggling with hangovers (not our party!) A wonderful place, everyone should do it. The only sadness was that we brought out other peoples' rubbish with us. Why do people ruin for others what they had gone to admire? Awesome cache, thank you so much.
Had a brilliant climb up here even if it meant we where back late for dinner. The last wee bit is steep. We discovered that this climb is the limit of what Jacob will put up with being on my shoulders.
The formations are wonderful how they tower above and if you are really quiet you hear the occasional tickle tickle sound of a falling stone.

Nice walk up the steambed to the pinnacles and we continued the walk using the provided co-ordinates to locate the steeper path to the lookout and then back on the bush walk. Lovely TFTC

I couldn't of picked a worse day to do this one, it was pouring down, last time I walked up here it was 33 degrees so quite a change. TFTC
Nice easy walk up the almost dry creek to the base of the Pinacles had a lemonade and some cake,Then back down to the lookout track which is a little more strenuos but the FANTASTIC view makes it a must,Another Lemonade and more cake and a sandwich out through the loop track a bit disappointing after the sights of the previous two tracks. Thanks for bringing us here One of the TOP scenic spots in Wellington and the Waiarapa.
Cheers

out and about in the lower wairarapa today, the weather held off like i hoped it would, after finding the other cache at the enterance i headed up the parking lot and hiked up the river bed to this amazing place, took lots of photos and got answers to the questions, then headed up to the lookout for a view from the top before following the bushwalk back down again ,very well worth the walk ,glad you gave me the incentive to come up here. Thanks for this cache. Although it was still light drizzle when we returned from Cape Palliser, we decided we really should do this cache while we were down this way. It was still a pleasant walk, although slightly steepish around the corner. TFTC
We pulled in to the carpark having just completed the 20 km Kawakawa Station Walk max altitude 545 metres (and pretty steep going) followed by a visit to the Cape Palliser lighthouse 209 impressive steps and I glanced at the map and confidently told my companions that we would take the route up the riverbed and it was likely an easy stroll with nothing too strenuous for our tired and aching limbs. i assumed the high territory rating was for a rough track.
Yeah Right!......... See the photos!
After a few hundred metres I decided to return to the car and swap my "Adventure Sandals" for the soggy, smelly tramping boots steaming quietly in the car boot but bravely I told the rest of the group to carry on.
So by the time I had caught them we were close to where the track turns at a sharp angle. A sharp angle not only round the corner but also up towards the sky. My knees turned to jelly at the sight of it. However, summoning unknown reserves we struggled onwards and upwards with the triangle on the GPSr moving oh so slowly towards that taunting waypoint symbol.
Eventually the two icons coalesced and by the time I got my breath back the GPSr had averaged out and I was with 5 metres of GZ and quickly spotted the feature the question relates to. The altitude reading was all over the place though varying by over 50 metres.
Was it worth it? You bet! A most amazing place.
And it would not have seemed so strenuousl if we had not just finished such a demanding walk that very morning.

Beautiful and special place. Had an enjoyable walk around.. viewing from above and beside. Thanks for this cache. Logged with permission.
Absolutely awesome! We took the high road for the approach and the low road for the return. I think we got the best reveal that way - it just got better and better. Scorching hot summer day, with vivid blue sky as a background for the squillions of photos.
Thanks for the adventure. Now home to watch Return of the King.

Ventured up this surreal valley with the full caching team in tow (Sweet P, Sav Blanc Woman and the Neanderthal Man). Some happier than others to be engaged in this expedition.
The last few hundred metres tested the resolve of some team members, but there was consensus about the worth of the venture once we arrived at GZ.
Thanks for bringing us to this rather unique location. I'd rather be visiting on a day when it's not raining!
