Got there and had no reception so had to go off what we remembered reading. Such a beautiful spot that we didnt even mind a DNF. We also had no idea what each of the trees looked like. Better research next time for sure. TFTC

Cache # 5,130 - Waihi Falls was our first planned destination for the day, but it took us much longer to get here than planned (as usual when you are stopping for caches along the way). Made my way to the cache with Karincakiz herding the 3 dogs with us (who were happy to stretch their legs). Looked at several places first before following the GPS to the right spot. There the cache was an easy find. Lovely hiding spot, cache in good shape, falls were beautiful. TNLNSL. TFTC!

No joy from us today! Having pretty bad cache luck on this trip will have another look next time

The photos of these falls were no let-down, nor was the long drive to get here, it was well worthwhile. After admiring the falls and consuming our lunch we headed aside for this one. After checking a few NZ natives the hint combo was spotted and the nice sized cache was located. 14 years old this cache and original log-book too. MalcolmB was one of the first NZ cachers we found caches by when we arrived all those years ago, thanks.

A Saturday drive out was on the cards for today and a Facebook post showing the wonderful Waihi Falls was really tempting to venture out to. Headed along the back road out of Dannevirke armed with a Subway lunch and after finding that one I suggested we 'loop back' via the longest place name and Waipukurau and grab a Geotour cache in Dannevirke. Despite heading along skindoland roads I was really restrained and 'only' made 5 finds as the kms racked up under the tyres and the fuel gauge lowered. A great day out and some cool sights and sites were seen, and scene! Thanks all COs.

I thought it was time I did another clean up of the Northern Wairarapa area, particularly the 52 on 52 series and others nearby. I did many of the 52 on 52 caches before the series was created and their names changed to match - but that is all old history, about 9 or 10 years ago. Since a lot of caches have been archived in recent years, but many are still there and in good condition, I decided to try to find a few that looked likely to still be there - particulalry skindo caches where I had already solved the puzzle. The end result was a 12 hour round trip from Wellington, with 87 finds (of which 17 were archived caches).

Great to clear my Jan 2012 dnf on this one. the GPs took me to exactly the same spot, and it was just as I remembered. Cache was found safe and sound in its hidey hole a few meters away. Don't know why I didn't look there last time! We had the falls to ourselves today, which was quite a contrast to the heaps of tourists and campervans here in 2012.

Yay! It was quite an intrepid search but when the GPS settled it was where stated. Once the tree type was identified it was straight forward. TFTC!

Once we got our directions sorted it was helpful although a lot further away than anticipated. Not a lot of water over the falls but several groups swimming and enjoying the pool. TFTC

We are on our summer holiday, we usually take a few weeks and travel around the South Island, but this year we are heading around the North Island. Heading up the West coast and back down the East coast. Finding only a select few caches along the way, we are mostly targeting some challenges we have qualified for, some large size caches, some that fill gaps in our date placed grid, a few D/T combinations, some with lots of favourite points, letterboxes and anything else that grabs our fancy.

I had a fall on day two of our holiday, while out geocaching which has resulted in a fractured bone in my leg and I am in a moon boot and with crutches and I was told to keep weight off my leg. So I am only limited use when it comes to our trip now. I tend to stay in the campervan and just hand out suggestions of when and where GK should search.

I was disappointed that I could not join gk on the walk down to the bottom of the hill, but I did get to see the falls from above. GK found the cache and then had a swim further down from the falls. Very pretty place that he wants to give a favourite.
Thanks for placing this cache and thank you for the smiley.

Heading down to Masterton for a week of work. Decided to skip SH2 and take the scenic route along the coast. Stayed the night at the Freedom camping at Porangahau beach which was great. Off to Herbertville for the morning then Pongaroa in the afternoon collecting some caches. This cache was the highlight for us. Have wanted to come to these falls for years. Not a lot of water going over the falls but great place to enjoy the sun and have a refreshing swim. A favourite from us.

The falls are amazing. Took a while to find the cache. Will give this one a FP. Thanks for placing a cache in this amazing area

#8355. I had been looking forward to todays geocaching adventure for weeks. I love exploring the back roads of Wairarapa and southern Hawkes Bay and the gravel roads north of Route 52 are certainly in the category of "the road less travelled." I had mapped out a long trail of mainly skindo caches to find starting at Rimu Road and taking us up around Waihi Valley Road, Towai Road and Waitahora Roads. Barefootguru joined me on the quest today and we left Wellington at 7 am and reached Rimu Road at 9.55 am. We got back to Wellington via Dannevirke and Palmerston North at 9.30 pm. The weather on Friday was horrible with rain and hail showers and strong winds. But Saturday dawned clear and sunny and the Tararuas looked magic with a fresh coating of snow all over the tops and snow sprinkled over the upper beech forest, below the tops. Lots lambs in the paddocks, kowhai was starting to flower and there were plenty of birds singing for me to record for the NZ Bird Atlas.

This cache was one of the highlights of the day. The waterfall was in full volume comparing what we saw today with the various photos uploaded onto the cache page. Massive amount of water flowing over the scarp and dropping into the pool below. The track to the bottom has been recently upgraded as well. The cache took a bit of searching as there are several trees mentioned in the hint near GZ but it was by the oldest of the ones in the area. One of my rare cache finds today. Signed the logbook and replaced everything as found. Thanks MalcolmB for bringing us to this area. Highly recommended and a favourite awarded from me.

We were on a skindo run but GSEL diverted us here while in the area… and it was a highlight of the day! Having arrived on a sunny day post rain it was certainly impressive with the falls roiling into the drop, a sound hard to converse over, and spray reaching to the track. Cache took a short search of possible options while peering into the canopy to check the variety. Thanks for bringing us here MalcolmB!

30-Nov-19
We had an enjoyable time seeing these falls and finding this cache. It would be better if there had been more rain.

26-Oct-19
Today we made a Spring caching sojourn deep into the Wairarapa, on what worked out as quite a nice loop - along the Pahiatua-Pongaroa Rd, Coonoor Rd, up and along Towai Rd, a slight deviation to Waihi Falls, then along Waihi Valley Rd until we came back to the Pahiatua-Pongaroa Rd and homeward, with a deviation up Rimu Rd and back.
We chose today because the weather was promising and the day did stay fine, but was extremely windy in places, especially up in the Puketoi Range. There were many wonderful views painted in blues, purples, dark greens and soft green and lemon spring colours. And then there were the spectacular Waihi Falls. Rangiora trees flowered in abundance and there were odd patches of beautiful white native clematis. We saw plenty of lambs, and several magpie families. It was great to be out amongst it all.
The success rate for our caching was 100%, so it was a very satisfying day in all respects. All the caches had accurate co-ordinates - very helpful. Thank you to skindo for bringing us this way. Smile

Our intention had been to arrive here about time for lunch, and that worked perfectly. We searched for the cache first. It took quite a bit of scrambling about before Mr G found the right spot. The co-ords were good, but the hint object was not very obvious (although it is there). TFTC
We then moved across to admire the falls which were in full spate today and impressive. Mrs G remembered coming here as a child, probably 55+ years ago Surprised. She remembered driving across farmland to view the falls and couldn't recall the current road to the top or any amenities being there then. We made use of those picnic tables to enjoy our lunch when we walked back up. Thanks for encouraging us to come here MalcolmB. We give a fav for that.

[#1271 | 13:05] It took me a while since I'm not really expert on NZ trees and the GPS reception in weak at the spot, but after a couple of minutes I succeeded. Thanks & greetings from the Czechs!

Today's hunt for caches are those that are a few kms south of Dannevirke. I try to individualise each log where I can apart from the generic first line.

An awesome waterfall. Thanks for bringing me here. Took photos from the top and below. A favourite point.

Cheers for the cache.

One day out of a four day long weekend for geocaching was not much to ask for? An early start for us at 7.25am. A long day with 39 finds and 3 dnfs. Gravel winding roads in the Wairarapa picking up out of the place scattered caches - but the day was beautiful and no wind (except at the very top of somewhere in the wops lol). A highlight was getting to Pongaroa Hotel hoping for some chips and a beer on Good Sunday. Huh! Not a park in sight. Turned out it was an Easter Hunt weigh in between 1-3pm. OMG the wild pigs, deer, goats and rabbits in the back of farm wagons was an incredible sight to see. The kids had an obstacle race where they had to run it with a dead rabbit in each hand. Stopped for a while, skipped queuing for food and drink and on our way. Again in the middle of god knows where on a narrow winding gravel road when we stopped for a cache (thank GOD) when a large convoy of four wheel drivers (?) came belting along towards up. Then the last couple of hours we had our hearts in our mouth realising we were very short of petrol and whether many petrol stations would be open on Easter Sunday. Made it via a back road to Pahiatua where the BP was open! So I didn't really enjoy the afternoon - bit t stressful for me. A great but tiring day. Thanks to all the CO owners.

Nice sized container but left in view. Clean and dry. What a beautiful spot. Signed and returned and replaced as found. Tftc Having read the previous dnf logs when we got home we were surprised. Yes a lot of flooding but this was found tucked away slightly above the flood levels and can be seen walking by. It's grey and a good size.

19-Mar-18
this sadly looks like victim of last weeks flooding in the area!! and will need to be checked.Had this one all solved etc ready for our excursion over to route 52 and area.
We left fairly early and headed for skindo land - route 52 -or a part of it - making use of the remaining summer's drier conditions etc . We were amazed at the effects of the storm /flooding just over a week ago on the road and surrounding area and the many wash outs slips etc and we took some photos of this which i will log also. despite leaving early we still had only got as far as the waihi falls for lunch as we detoured a little and went for the lovely walk through the small reserve at mangatoro to see the giant trees there. we replaced several caches and log books that were very wet, with water proof paper.
thank you for this series of caches and the happy faces.

19-Mar-18
We observed the signs of massive flooding here which occurred over the last few days. The water is still very discolored even though the level has returned to normal.Sadly I think the cache has gone,as I found no trace of it anywhere.A very beautiful place to visit. Will return again.

11-Mar-18
I had planned to visit here several weeks ago to get some photos of the falls for an online photo competition, but life got in the way. With all the recent rainfall from Cyclone Gita I decided it was time to make a real effort to get here. After checking the maps I decided that a return drive from Masterton was do-able on a sunny Sunday afternoon so I hit the road. Unfortunately my ridiculous sat-nav decided that the best route was to drive all the way into Dannevirke before heading back south-east so the drive became much longer than expected. As I was leaving Dannevirke I suddenly had the thought that the falls may be harbouring a geocache. I managed to get the phone app open just as I lost reception, but despite having no imagery, no description, no clue etc. I did manage to get the GZ (on a blank screen) with my location and that was enough to start. On arriving at the falls I wasn't sure I would find anything as the river has been HUGE in recent days, which was eveident by all the debri and flattened foliage. That included the area my phone was indicating as the GZ. After a slow, wet search I managed to spot the cache only slightly above the high water mark. The log was a little damp, but otherwise fine. TFTC. Now, onto those photos . . .

Found while detouring on a roadtrip to Wellington. Took a while but eventually found. Track could do with a bit of an upgrade. Not much water today but still beautiful.

Caching around Palmerston North, collecting a few caches along the way with rustynz and gorby. Thanks for the hides Big Grin

25-Feb-18
We 3 (rustynz and Rebel98 and myself) are down from Auckland for 3 days of caching, we regularly fly away together on grab-a-seat deals for 3 day caching trips, and today is our 2nd day of our adventures.

We had planned to come to Waihi Falls a few weeks ago, thought it might be easy today to navigate here, but with 3 people all having a say about how to get here from Mangatainoka, it all ended up being rather messy in the directions and the route we took, without seeing the rout, I'm sure we could have taken an easier and much.. much... much shorter route!

Never mind, we got here in one piece, parked up at the carpark and took our trip down to the falls. I was really tired by now and took the foto of the falls from the lookout just down from the carpark. I said to rusty, that'll do me, I'll just go to the cache and leave it at that! Didn't want to go right down to the falls, seemed too hard, but when our GPS's were pointing 25m 'that way' I could see clearly that there was no alternative but to head right dooooownnn to the falls. Rusty had a great laugh about that! So here I am with rusty, she and I start a search looking for kowhai trees, we look up to try to identify what was what and I said I'm sure that's a Kowhai, sure enough my little mate spots the cache while I'm in mid-sentence.... whoo hoo! So by now Rebel has caught us up then after signing ourselves in we take more notice of the falls themselves. How beautiful! A pity though they are not in full bloom so to speak. But still magnificent though. We see a large family with their chillie bins relaxing and swimming and having great fun, then we take some necessary fotos for later perusal and we're on our way back up the hill.

Thanks MalcolmB, for bringing us here. I have had these falls on my list of things to do for many years, long before I became a geocacher.

25-Feb-18
I am not sure how we got here, but we came the longgggggg way!

The GPS had us going all over the place, and it looks like today is not going to be about numbers! its going to be about quality!#$@

So here I am, rustynz, with rebel98 and gorby looking for an elusive sistema in the jungle Big Grin Found a really deep hiding space that could be good for a cache, except this is not its hiding place. Once I was on the right level, then I spied the cache, and celebrations were had. Now it was time to explore and have a look at the waterfall.

So thankyou MalcolmB for bringing us here, can imagine after rain, its spectacular Wink

Found on today's road trip during my vacation in New Zealand. Really nice spot here with beautiful waterfalls. Definitely worth the detour from route 52.

Had some problems finding the cache itself, because I first looked to near at the river, but going a bit uphill, I finally could spot it. To my surprise the last finders in March where some muggels hunting pokemons...

Thanks for the hide.
Greetings from Germany.

Out on a day trip to Waihi Falls collecting a few caches along the way. Finally made it here via Weber and Route 52 (yes the long way...) and had a late picnic lunch under the shelter here before heading down to the falls. Had the Garmin GPSr for this one so didn't have too many problems under the trees and soon located the cache at GZ. An idyllic spot at the falls themselves with several groups visiting while we were here and the Jr. Cachers spent time dipping their feet in the water. Thanks for providing an incentive to visit the falls and a FP from us to encourage others.

25-Nov-16
Hubby offered up his day to drive me around these back country roads picking up ones that I had either missed or never made it too in our last trips, I dont have too many left out this way but we enjoyed the gravel roads and how quite it was, stopped in pongaroa for lunch, we didnt find the store so welcoming but the pub was awesome friendly staff and nice food with a great outdoor area, we hit a few spots of rain but mainly just wind, most caches were in great condition and replaced the ones I could, have a few more to clear up out here which means another enjoyable trip out this way sometime. Thanks to all the COs for the placements and the ones who replaced ones we were able to find. Sorry about the copy and paste logs we covered a fair few caches over some lovely views, we were thankful to be the ute as the holden would have been thick with dust today. + fav point this is one hidden gem, hubby when heading out here passed on he hadn't been here for over 20 years.

Mega Weekend

It all started about a month ago when Cats&Dragons brought up the idea of heading down the line to collect 350+ caches. We both had targets that we wanted to meet before attending the NZ Mega. Plans and locations were drawn up and puzzles were begun to be solved. It took me a while to get my head around a few of the puzzles and with the help of a cacher I was soon on a roll.

The weekend finally came and we departed Hamilton at 6pm on a Friday night. 3days, 2,000km, & 11hrs sleep, later 472 caches collected. Thanks to all those who's caches I found especially Skindo with a huge number laid.

A MEGA Adventure

Both Nova Lightning and myself had set ourselves caching targets that we were hoping to meet in time for the NZMEGA in a few weeks. So with a plan in progress and fuel in the tank away we set.
Departed home at 6pm Friday, returned home 3.30pm Monday, 7 hours sleep approx 470 caches and a great adventure.

Thanks to all those that have placed caches especially Skindo as I think we gave his caches a bit of a nudge

Thanks for a great weekend of Caching and Bull.

Came here on a long day's caching trip to the region with a total of 77 caches scored for the day and over 500km driven. A very impressive waterfall and well worth the diversion to get to it! The cache was a quick find with quite accurate coordinates. Signed log, TFTC and for introducing us to this great spot, I would never have known about it without the cache to bring me here.

With the Seagnoid on Skindo's cache trail down Route 52 to Pongaroa and side roads, and now up Waihi Valley. Thanks MalcolmB for bringing us here.

[green] With Popmac on the way home from a Gisborne geocaching / daffodil trip. Popmac grows daffodils and took a bunch to a daffodil tournament thingy in Gisborne with plans to cache along the way, and I came along for the ride. He won $100! Covers part of the petrol costs! Which helps, as we are taking the long way home.
Came to visit the falls - Wow! Does anybody - anybody besides us geocachers - know that these falls are here?? Dropped in a pathtag and a favourite. Took lots of photos of the trackables in my inventory enjoying the scenery, one included here.

#4626. The falls are well worth a visit. We got to GZ in a somewhat roundabout way. I was looking around wondering where to search when I spotted the cache in its hidey hole (luckily I was standing in a spot the cache was visible from). One of a handful of non-skindo caches found on our trip. TFTC.

What a fabulous spot, had never heard of the waterfall before and am very glad we made the detour here.
Cache took a bit of bushbashing to get to (we found an easier route back) and used the hint in the end but the hint object was so tall, it was hard to spot.
Thanks for bringing me here.

A long detour to not find the cache. Sad
Found the required hint items where the GPS zeroed out, but couldn't find any signs of a cache. Searched some other hint objects nearby, but no luck there either. Hope the cache is still there...

A bit further from route 52 than we had thought but worth the journey. Didn't know about these falls - spectacular! Left snake, coin; took scrunchies. Thanks for bringing us here - and the cache.

Have been meaning to do this one for sometime and ended up doing on a showery day.We had just finished logging when the rain started and got drenched Still, it was worth as the falls are quite spectacular. Thanks

Long rough drive to cache, but well worth it. With the recent floods and heavy rain today the falls certainly were in excellent working order. Took a while to locate the cache. SL took TB to move along. TFTC

Arrived at GZ, WOW what a nice spot for a cache, managed to get a few photos and started looking for the cache when some muggles turned up at the final GZ, BUGGER, we talked to them for a few minutes and decided that it was time to leave as they were definitely NOT going anywhere fast. So have to log this on as a DNF until next visit, will definitely be back.

The falls looked spectacular today although a little silty after the wind and rain. Quick a few visitors - and the cache has been found by muggles who rehid it carefully. - coin + medication syringe. TFTC.

Lovely falls, well worth the drive in, the road out was an easier drive. Love caches in neat places that we probally wouldn't have got to otherwise. TFTC TNLN

Another of the hidden gems in this part of the world. Yes, it takes a bit of getting here but very well worth the travel to visit this magical place.

The cache hide was challenging and took a bit of hunting, but found in the end. All in order, no visits to here since January we noted.

TNLNSL and found with team cacher Sweet P too Smile

Really enjoy the location of MalcolmB caches, and this is no exception (I like them better when I can find them too, but that's another story)
Was a great drive home with NZOGPS Maps trying to take us up a whole series of farm tracks - email sent to them too Big Grin
Thanks for bringing us here.

If you are using the driving directions, make sue you are not tempted to turn up Falls Road, mistaking it for Waihi Falls Rd. We arrived at about 9pm and made our windy way to the GZ for what seemed like an age. CzechKiwi thought I was crazy. We decided to camp here and get the cache in the morning but it was surprisingly squally which made erecting the tent nigh impossible. Using the car as shelter, slept under the stars watching meteor showers and satelities whizzing across the sky, which is so clear here. Awoken abruptly at just after 6pm by a low flying biplane flying noisily to the Wing Over Wairarapa event no doubt. Cache was relatively straightforward, though decided against an early morning swim. Left Gonzo to bath in the Fountain of Youth. Thanks Malcolm.

Yes found it easily, like these kind of caches, short walk so you still get to see something but easy to find once you get there. Thanks Carla

Took the long route home from Napier - it is certainly worth going the extra distance to view these spectacular falls. The picnic area and view points are well done too. GZ was spot on and the hint was helpful as the container is well camoflaged. A few more trinkets were added. Thanks MalcomB - we highly recommend this cache.

We used this as a break from driving from Napier towards Wellington. Despite the brown water, the falls were still well worth visiting. Thanks for hiding at this nice place!

Very nice little waterfall! It was a good place for our picnic this day. But not under the shelter Wink That was a little bit to cold.

This took us a while to find - GPS got confused for a while, but after a bit of thinking we tracked down the cache.
This place must be one of NZ's best kept secrets, great spot, and one of the best waterfalls we've seen.... thanks for bringing us here as we would never have seen them otherwise. Can't believe no cachers other than the FTF have been here.... come on guys, you are really missing something..... TNLN
