I am regretfully archiving this cache since there's been no response from nor action by the cache owner within the time frame requested in the last reviewer note.

Hi Eli_The_Moose

This geocache was brought to my attention as being in need of an owner maintenance visit and after my previous reviewer note, there has been no owner response. The cache owner needs to check on this cache ASAP and either replace it or archive it, after picking up any geo-litter. See the [maintenance section of the Geocache Listing Requirements/Guidelines](http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx#listingmaintenance).

I've added this cache to my watchlist, and I will check back in four weeks to be sure that the maintenance has been done. In the meantime, I have temporarily disabled this listing. When the maintenance is completed, the owner can enable the listing by clicking on the link below the cache name to return it to active status.

Whatever your intentions, please **post a note** here on the cache page (not email) to let us know that you are still active and maintaining the cache. If a month passes without seeing a response, then I'll assume that this listing should be archived.

Please note, that if a cache is archived due to lack of owner maintenance, the cache is unable to be unarchived.

Regards

Folks, when we replaced it a couple of years back, it was definitely inside. You must go inside, and you must have a torch. There's no way to find this cache without both of these pre-reqs. Can the next cacher passing by check and confirm that they looked inside with a torch? We left it at head height, but it might've moved a bit by now.

13-Feb-20
I can definitely confirm that both Gadget169 and I were both inside the hobbit hole with torches looking for the cache. We even searched extensively at GL in and around holes in case the cache had fallen to the ground

13-Feb-20
Thank you for the confirmation K.J.R. - if anyone is heading that way in the next few weeks, could you please bring a simple replacement cache? It would be a shame to lose this spot - it's so special! Unless a local geocacher wants to put their hand up for a replacement here or nearby, as it looks like the C.O. is having a wee break at the moment.

Mmm. Another no-find despite 4 pairs of eyes. HOTA

29-Jan-20
Had general spot but no torch.

29-Jan-20
No coverage no torch. Liked the hobbit houses

20-Jan-20
A lovely morning walk to Lake Sylvan before heading home. Sadly after a very thorough look in the hobbit hole before and after reaching our destination neither Gadget169 or I were able to find the cache

Took a while but when we looked in the activity we found it.

13-Oct-18
We loved this cache so much, we replaced the cache box and log. It is more at head height and you still require the torch! Please replace well so that muggles don't take it away. Hope that is OK with the cache owner.

I recorded a DNF in 2010 on my first visit here but at the time couldn't get into the hole. This time I was right in and assisted by Pipedream and with a good torch. We had a pretty good search and would have to question if the cache is still there. Will watch with interest to see if any one else finds it.Great walk though.TFTC

Once in a lifetime we wanted to travel to the other side of the world. This year we took a chance and made a 4 weeks trip to New Zealand! Although caching was not the main purpose, we had our GPS prepared and when we were close to a cache, we of course looked for it and logged it. So we found several dozens of "kiwi-caches" and want to thank all the owners!!

Today we made a trip from Queenstown via Glenorchy to the Paradise. Weather was not paradisic, but aquatic... Although we were looking for some caches. To the lake and back it was raining cats and dogs, but it was a great experience!! This cache we noticed on the way to the lake, but decided to find and log it on the way back. 15min in wet and dirty clothes is enough.... Thanks for showing!

### Na dann mal los ###
I took a solo-hike after dinner from the nearby camp-site and it was actually quite pleasant. Upon arrival at GZ, I had that short Australian cringe "Oh! Snakes!" until I realised that I'm in NZ and the worst thing which can happen is a creepy but harmless crawler Wink Left two TBs which already got grabbed away.

***Thanks and cheers***

Found by Facitman and Mrs Facit during our Campervan trip around the South Island at 13:52
Another fantastic walk in Otago with the bonus of a cache or two. Mrs Facit and I made our way along the newly constructed track and came across GZ, a thought for a few minutes to decide how to tackle this and shortly after the cache was found, logged and replaced.
Thanks Eli The Moose

Time is racing, and the plan is to walk to Lake Sylvan, finding this cache along the way. Loved the hide, was able to squeeze inside and find the cache, I had not bought a torch, so was a little worried about not finding the cache. I was going to take photos to light up the area, thankfully that was not needed, but I still took photos looking out. Thanks for the hide and the adventure. [:D}

Great walk in the forest. The cache was found by the kids with great spirit.

Today we went on a tour of the Glenorchy area including Paradise and Lake Sylvan. Along the road we were treated with some very stunning scenery as well as some sunshine. We went on the Lake Sylvan walk which was one of the day's highlights.

This is a special cache to me... Back in 2009 I was on a course (Cons Corps), we camped at the Lake Sylvan Camp site, doing Bat surveys and checking traplines in the area. On one of our days we walked to Rockburn hut, on the way we found a hollow tree so decided to get a few of the group in there and take a photo. checking the photo when we got out of the tree we saw something unusual. This is how we had accidentally found the geocache. Our team leader knew what it was and explained to us about geocaching. I thought it sounded like a lot of fun but didn't end up doing anything about it. It wasn't Until the end of 2012 when I was at a friends place talking with friends of theirs from Czech, they said they did geocaching which sparked my interest back up again. From then on I haven't looked back. I even got a couple of caches with those friends when I was In Czech last year Very Happy
I am extremely happy that I was able to get this cache, it was a very happy moment in my geocaching life Very Happy
Thank you

An amusing spot for a cache, although I didn't know that hobbits lived in trees Wink. Slieschke did the honorary hobbit thing and went inside - even took off his shoes for authentic hobbit-ness. Beautiful area with all the moss and fallen trees, and the misty rain just made it even better. TFTC!!! Big Grin

We did this one after the fun-most swinging bridge on the very beautiful roundtrip to lake Sylvan.
One of us was a shoed Hobbit, the other one just lazy Wink

With rain threatning, we decided to take the short walk to Sylvan Lake and maybe visit the Hobbits on our way. A bit under 1/2 an hour had us knocking at their door. With no one answering we had a look around. Fortunately we had a light and we were able to find a present left, just for us. Thanks goodness for that light !

On our way back from Paradise KullerKeks90 and I spend on the campground next by the night. On the next day we wanted to tramp on the Routburn Track. Now that we have seen Glenorchy, it is time to go for some walk. The one of the lake sylvan seems interesting. Awesome place, really. So quiet forest. We reach the place of the cache, and again, it is incredible. This cache is a must-do because it propose an experience very interesting. We had a light lamp, but at this moment of the day, it was light enough for seeing the cache.
Thanks for this awesome cache.

It is great that half if the team is taller for some caches - this time the smaller part was on duty to hide in the hobbit hole and find the cache. We did not need the Garmin, we just had to wait a bit for some muggles to move on. Great hide, TFTC

I originally found this as part of the dakotacats team but I have my own username now so I am re-logging as whiskasnz. thanks

Found it : 23/Dec/2013 : We were staying nearby with friends so we decided to all for a walk and a spot of fishing at Lake Sylvan. We didn't need a torch for this cache, we had a nine-year old boy with us, he was more than happy to play fetch. Cheers for this cache, it's a great area to visit. Left a TB behind. Logging this as part of the Ramblers Reward Challenge.

So when we were at Milford Sound this cache seemed to be quite close. Not considering that there is a mountain range in between Smile
Thankfully there is no tunnel yet and more than 350 km of road between the two caches. Needless to say they were not found in the same day ...
After a dayhike up the Routeburn track, we hiked up to the Hobbit Hole and whilst squeezing into the hole a small robin started pecking my shoes and the bum of my mrs. Wink
Quite a guardian of the cache.

Thanks for bringing us here!

Found orginally as part of phasevisitor team, now created own account, re-logging as yorkshirekiwi83.

We are currently on holiday down in Queenstown, visiting from Auckland. This afternoon we decided to drive out to Glenorchy. Had a really pleasant walk to GZ, where the smaller member of the team entered the hole and made a quick find of the cache. Thanks for the cache – a favourite!

We also dropped of one of our kiwi TB’s, to continue his travels.

Wink
