No sign of a cabbage tree at GZ, just lots of long grass, flax and lupins. We wandered around in ever decreasing circles for about 20 minutes before calling it quits.
We got very wet. But could not find a cache after a long time searching. We read logs but could not find anything sadly. Lovely beach.
Great spot. Not good coverage out there if using a phone. Magic spot and very dry and we'll sealed log. Tftc.
#18 on a 3 day weekend of geocaching adventures down South. Found it and boy oh boy are we glad about that. Got to GZ through the bush rather than via the beach but not sure if that would have been easier or not. It was raining and the bush was very overgrown. After about 20 minutes of wandering around K finally found the "stump" with a very loud "WOO HOO I'VE FOUND IT!!!"
I think this may have aroused the curiosity of a sealion on the beach and nek minnit K sees the head pop up and it's all panic stations. "RUN J RUN!!!" so off we go full blast down the bank not caring which direction as long as it's far from that sealion. We soon make it to the track below and run like the wind checking behind to make sure we are not being followed. All clear but we still run (soaked to the skin from the rain) all the way back to the car (laughing by this stage) just in case it knows a shortcut...Definitely a (scary) favourite for us and sooooo glad we had signed the cache and placed it back under a soggy stump as I probably would have dropped it and ran!!! TFTC

What a great beach, love the rock! Got ourselves confused by trying to find the cache using the hint - as others have said, the path has moved & the tree is just a stump now. Found the box by following the GPS & finding the stump.
This is the driest, most thoroughly waterproofed cache we've found in a while - logbook is in a ziplock bag, inside a snaplock container, inside another ziplock back, inside a bigger snaplock container with camo paint. Nice to read the logs & hear that others have helped to maintain this cache, it is such a great location and we're glad that there was a cache to bring us here. TFTC.

This morning after breakfast i went first for a climb on Cooks head.
The cache was was hard. Not found for a long time, the little tree dead and under some wood. I had to look two times at the same place.
It's a great place, many shells - the kids had fun. We loved it to stay here for the night.
Thanks

Cache 4/4 of a pre-work trip around the back roads of the Milton area. A fair bit of a walk in to the GZ but upon further reading of the waypoint instructions I think I parked in the wrong place. Lovely beach walk anyway. Lovely cache which was nice and dry with plenty of room in the log book. thanks

Log book replaced thanks to kiwichris and even returned old one to my letter box. Thanks!
Have looked at Cooks Head from Toko Mouth many times, so joined an OTMC Sunday trip organised by i-gotit which finally got us here to climb it. So this is one of the furthest south remnants of the Waipiata Vocanics! http://data.gns.cri.nz/geology/ Impressive basalt organ pipes lying on their sides and a fantastic view from the top. i-gotit says the rock was named by Young Nick, on Captain Cook's first voyage to NZ.
The main track no longer goes past the cache site (but a side track goes on the seaward side of the hide). The clue tree has died... there is just a stump there now. But i-gotit hd no trouble finding it nonetheless.
Came prepared with a replacement logbook, double bagged, in a 200 ml snaplock which fits nicely inside the original container. Have removed the soaked contents - will drop off logbook to CO once it's dried out.

This was my second visit to Cooks Head, the first last year before I took up geocaching. My new toy took me straight to the cache. Luckily daywalk was with me and had all the equipment on hand to leave a nice and dry cache behind.
Found with I-gotit (and yes, that is exactly what she shouted from GZ!) and daywalk on part 2 of an OTMC Sunday walk. Impressive volcanic intrusion. testament to the hardness of the intrusion, given that the surround ing rock has eroded away.
Track has moved, so our various GPSrs had us wandering all over the place until we heard I-gotit's previously mentioned cry. Thanks to daywalk's ministration (and preparedness -- she must have been a scout in her younger days) the log was replaced in its own container, which was then bagged and placed in the original snaplock, so it should still be dry for the next finder.
Thanks to the CO for keeping this cache going, in spite of archiving many of his when the 'real' cacher left Dunedin to study elsewhere.

Container is very wet and log unsignable, sorry had nothing to replace it with on us, TFTC tho
A new logbook required and the container and it's contents need drying out. Maybe consider placing cache in a more appropriate position.
Lovely walk out to this one, Stunning location using hint below the cache was quickly in hand, unable to sign log as it was completely wet. On other hand we enjoyed the climb up the rock and enjoyed the views offered before climbing back down to explore around the base the rock formations and cave/crack in rock. Thanks for bringing us out this way, a fav point for the location from me
Found with Chosen1978. A good walk from the carparking area and the cache was soon found, Unable to sign the logbook as it was saturated (Sorry no spare logbook on me). Had a great time climbing to the top of the rocks and admiring the views both up and down the coast. Explored round the rock looking at the amazing formation of the rock. Well worth a fav point from me just for the location.
Out for a lovely Sunday drive, while hubby was cycling, so thought I would do a few caches along the route. Thanks also the log book is damp.
Found the cache however there was no pen / pencil present. Might pay to add a BYO pencil to the description. Will post a photo of the find as proof.

So we got here ! IF this rock was under water,it would be covered in crayfish, haha. What a great spot with the surf pumping today. Tftc
As the previous visitor to the cache we first took the wrong road to Chrystalls Beach... but found the right one soon. Thanks for making us walk all the way to Cooks Head, it was a lovely day with plenty of sunshine. Enjoyed it a lot! had the beach all to ourselves, so now problem with muggles. TFTC.
I have been meaning to come and explore this beach for some time now but other things kept happening so never go a chance until today - what an awesome stretch of beach, and not a soul in sight!! Thanks so much for bringing us here! [^]
Cache a bit wet, so dried out as much as possible, logbook ok just mouldy. Nice beach, thanks
Good place for a cache. Itx was a bit wet so we tipped out the excess water snd hopefully thay will dry things out.
What a fantastic location. On our way home to Christchurch and thought we would just take a detour for an hour or so. Well worth a look. TFTC. Left Platypuss (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) in this lovely location. Hope he doesn't get too wet. We had to empty water from the cache container and dry it out. Would have liked to have a bit more time exploring this coastline.
What a nice little beach, kids enjoyed exploring the big crack int the rocks, Mr 8 decided it was the brain part of Cook's head. TFTC
A nice wee walk along the road to this one with the boys. We had a great time playing around on the beach before finding this. Mrs Cumbyrocks was quite taken with some Kiwicross cattle with a distinctive middle white stripe spotted as we drove along, comparing them to Top Deck chocolate bars. TFTC!
Cache and contents quite wet, though log book was still okay inside the bag. Did my best to dry out a little before replacing cache.

Fun drive out here, nearly managed to turn this into a driveby. Lovely bit of beach. Why didn't you put it on top of the rock? Cheers Gav [6776]
Nice quick find. I've seen the rock on maps before and was intrigued enough. Now that I'm here I see why it has lasted in this erosive environment - it is an basaltic igneous intrusion - much like the organ pipes and Blackhead though this looks like it has been tilted horizontally - the fault to blame??
Bag not sealed, container wet, did what I could with my cache first aid kit stuck at work.
TFTC - great spot!!

Had a wee job to do here at the dairy farm,Got this one on the way home.Great spot.TFTC
Bit of a route getting to this section of the beach. Took a different road earlier and found the wrong end of the beach. A nice quiet but exposed spot with a sad little cabbage tree at GZ. TFTC
Now this is what caching is all about. Fabulous deserted beach and a nice quick drive by!
We were lucky enough to have had a nice day for this cache as we climbed Cooks head and had a great view.
Did this one on the way over to Bull Creek for New Years. Took my son with me to find this, by the time we had reached the cache he had grown tired of walking head on into a southerly. Was a much faster trip back to the car with the wind at our backs and rain coming in horizontal!
In the area for a few hours caching around Milton and then over to the coast, with the boys.
What a great spot to visit, lucky enough to see a flock of “Spoonbills†as they passed close by flying along the coast. We all climbed up onto the rock and spent a while enjoying the location.
Thanks.

Well, we did a bit of extra driving for this one – however it seems we are not the only ones, so we were relieved about that on reading other logs. We did see some great waves smashing into the rocks at the ‘other’ Chrystalls Beach, so it was still a good drive, and Annie enjoyed all the lambs she saw along the way at this time of year. We eventually backtracked to the correct location and had a quick stroll along the track dodging between most of the raindrops. PB also spotted another hint item up on the rock that he thought would have been a good hiding place, but we do think that those who have climbed right to the top were feeling rather adventurous.

Quick find (an 'ol cacher fav). I would have stuck it up that interesting rock.. Beach completely empty. Thanks.
What a lovely beach! Took a trip to the top of the rock too, great view. Thanks for bringing us here, will definitely return
[ ] Was great fun, just my second time, now I'm hooked.
Took a wee dog and left a zip tie and a parachute man.

nice spot for a cache and the rock was impressive a shame that it is a bit too steep to climb.

We must have gone to Chrystalls Beach a hundred times, but I don't remember ever coming down this end, and I don't remember the rock. Thanks for that.

Glad this cache was not on top of the nearby feature which was guarded by birds. TFTC
Had to drop Mrs Nofs off at the airport at 6:30 and had nothing urgent before 10, so turned up here just in time to watch the sunrise and the moon set. Lovely, thank.
Second time to this area in the last few weeks. I had picked up the Akatore Memorial cache just a few kilometres away the day after it was published and returned home to find this cache had gone up on the site! The owner is forgiven however as they tell me that they submitted both caches on the same evening, 20 minutes apart, and one was approved and published that night but the second wasn't processed until the next day. Just one of those things I guess but frustrating in these times of high fuel prices. Never been here before despite having a cache of my own at Bull Creek.
Oh yay! Thank you everyone for leaving this for us - our very first FTF! And the coast was stunning in this weather. Surf? Baby Pukeko was so enthused he almost forgot he doesn't even own a surfboard! A lovely area - the only other time I've been here was a picnic in torrential rain!
TFTC. We swapped the gold stars for a kids pedometer.

So was it a deliberate ploy to publish two caches in the same area 24 hours apart? Having just logged the FTF on Akatore Memorial and then noticing this cache has come up, I can assure you that the air is blue!
