Great Northern escape 2022 Day 48. Atherton Day 3. My third day trip was to the Malanda area. There was a set of Labs here and another waterfall to visit. A nice walk around town took me to three local caches before heading to the surrounding area. A nice chat with a local cacher who rescued me at one cache. Next was Millaa for lunch and a few caches, including one I failed last month. The day ended with a final Lab at Evelyn and home via a final earth cache.
Unfortunately the day ended with a DNF, if this cache was supposed to be at the only interesting tree, then it was not. If it was under some random rock pile on the side of the river ? I did not manage to find the right pile. Plenty of beer bottles, but I only took a few of those.
Thanks.

1MinnieMoo and I motored onto this one next.
We parked up and made our way down toward GZ. I opted for a slightly different route to 1MinnieMoo which caused me to see the cache. 1MinnieMoo retrieved and we signed the log.
A nice little swimming hole. Some local lads went past on the upper road heading toward the waterhole as we were heading back up. Incidentally, this cache is currently the 991st oldest active cache in Queensland. TFTC Danielc

Today was going to be a bit of a higgledy piggledy day of caching adventures for Fangsoki and I, involving a number of multi caches and other caches we had on our list but just hadn’t had a chance to get to over the past couple of days.
The second half of the day was well upon us now, and having just been up the top of here for the other caches by this CO, we now ventured down here for this one. It didn’t take Fangsoki long to spy the cache - he’d approached from the higher ground - and then I extracted it from the lower approach.
Then a quick sneak down to where I could hear the water flowing, to get a glimpse before we were off for just a couple more caches in our day.
Thanks for the cache Danielc.

An unexpected day off gave us the opportunity to explore our new home zone a bit. As Mrs TMR is always looking for swimming spots this cache was very attractive and it is so worth it. Moss's pool is just beautiful and will probably become a favourite spot in the future. As always it is important to approach the cache from the right angle, then it's easy to spot. Cache container is in good shape. After spotting a tree snake climbing into the canapé, a swim and a beer we set off to take the track to Herberton (some good 4WDing!) Thanks Dan for showing us this gem,

Hooray for finding this one on leap year Saturday. We did look for it way back when when we were brand new to geocaching - with no luck at all because we were looking at the wrong outstanding tree (even with our gps saying it couldn’t be the right tree). So a few weeks ago, when I started looking for a special geocache for today, I came across the Arachnauts post saying that they had finally found it. So with renewed enthusiasm for a cache that was clearly still there, we set off and rediscovered this fabulous area. The creek was fairly pumping today and everything is green and overgrown. Love living in the tropics. Thanks for getting us out and about in the great outdoors. Another fantastic cache from Danielc.
Finally! Wouldn’t exactly describe this as a NEF & expanding circles is what my iPhone sends me on at the best of times. Found this 10-15m from the obvious tree after spending a fair bit of time looking under every other rock & tree for at least 50m. Was about to give up (again) when some locals turned up & started walking off when I saw it - easy at the right angle but not where you might expect it to be from the hint. TFTC Dan, 0
NEF at a gorgeous spot we didn’t know existed. It was so hot today, the moo cows were standing udder deep in the creek prior. So cute. TFTC.
Ventured down the road and eventually reached the swimming hole. Great little spot to visit way off the beaten track. Stopped for some lunch after which the cache was located after a bit of a search. TFTC
Found this one yesterday. Good clue. Definitely is the obvious tree and obvious rocks at base... but cache is not hidden at the clue but rather in the immediate area. Suggest searching outwards from clue spot in expanding circles. Even better was the skinny dip to cool off as none of us had swim gear!
Doing circuitous route from Herberton today. Arrived at Barron in Name Only, and found the obvious spot with no cache.
Sent a message to CO, and waited for quite a while having our coffee, but he did not respond. We could have replaced it for him.
Thanks Dan, great spot for coffee

Found the most logical tree & most logical rocks in a good 25m radius of GZ, but no joy. Nice spot, thanks anyway.
We enjoyed a longer drive than necessary in getting to GZ but didn't mind that so much. The cache was found, logged and returned while the family nearby playing in the river was unaware of our presence. Thanks Danielc for the tour and destination. TNLNSL TFTC.
Our current visit to Australia had been in the planning for over a year with the very significant help and advice from friends who live in Melbourne. The original plan was for a 2 month visit, but as things progressed we just couldn't help extending our trip to the full 90 days allowed on our visas - after all it's a big country and so much to see and do, especially with our favourite pastimes being birding, hiking and of course geocaching! Our journey started with our arrival at Perth airport followed by a day cycling around Rottnest Island before travelling on to Adelaide where we met up with our friends. We then continued on to spend some time on Kangaroo Island, before heading to Melbourne via Goolwa, Strathalbyn, Coorong, Mount Gambier, Cape Bridgewater, the Grampians National Park, Port Campbell, Cape Otway and Lorne, cramming in as much as possible on route. The second leg of our journey was a fabulous 9 days in Tasmania. Having then returned to Melbourne we set off on the third leg of our journey, which was to Sydney via Wilson’s Promontory, Lakes Entrance, Mallacoota, Pambula Beach, Thredbo, Canberra and Fitzroy Falls. Having spent a few days in Sydney with geocaching friends we flew to the Gold Coast and Lamington National Park for the start of the fourth leg of our travels, continuing on to Noosa and a trip out to Fraser Island. We then flew from Brisbane to Cairns, where we spent a couple of nights before heading out to the Tablelands (where we are at present). We then visit the birding hotspot of Daintree before driving up to Cape Tribulation. We will then head back south again to Port Douglas and a day out on the Great Barrier Reef, before returning to Cairns for the flight to Alice Springs. In Alice Springs we will hire a 4x4 camper and set off for a week on the circuit to and from Kings Canyon and Ayers Rock. We then fly to Darwin from where we will spend the last two weeks of our holiday making our way to Broome via Kakadu, Cooinda, Katherine Gorge, Kununarra, Lake Argyle, Emma Gorge, the Bungle Bungle’s and Fitzroy Crossing. Our last two nights in Australia will be spent in Broome before we fly back to Perth, from where we will connect with the flight all the way back home to Zimbabwe via South Africa. We already know we can't wait to return!
Found after a brief search in the dark by torchlight! Thanks so much for the cache.

oh wow, I've discovered a new swimming spot! Yay! This is a super cache in superb condition, added a few things cos the jar was dry and clean and pretty empty. Thanks for showing me this fabulous new place. And such a good hint.
Long weekend in the Tablelands.
A lovely little spot, too cold for swimming today. After logging we continued the road in hope of reaching the next hide. Realized that we did not have the time needed and turned back, at the gate I thought that to road going left from the gate looked like good one. After meeting wild pigs we came to a dead end!
Thanks for hiding

Found while doing the CAFNEC Far North Wilderness ride, this spot was a welcome relief and time to take a dip for many riders followed by snacks by the water.
Eventually Stealth Seeker and myself went in search of the cache while the others lay around resting The ride back out of this valley to the main road is a killer.

We have been looking forward to doing a bit of driving through the forests to hopefully grab three caches nearby. This was the first one we found....and here we find another beautiful little spot that we would not have seen if not for geocaching.
How lucky are we that locals who know the area well are prepared to hide and maintain caches and share special hidden places.
Many thanks Danielc for another great hide[^]

a quick unscheduled trip up to the tablelands
formalities sorted, and a bit of time up my sleeve before heading back south
time to knock a few caches of my to do list
lets scratch that DNF for this one
last visit 3/01/2013,
so some 2 years later I get to wipe that blemish
the veg is a bit thicker than I remember
but managed to make a fairly quick find this time
don't know what I was doing last time [:o)]
still a nice spot, too cool for a dip today, plus I don't have that much time
plus, I still got a few more caches to do, before I start heading back south
thanks for the cache Danielc

Umbelievable. Is this place for real? What a beautiful spot, another hidden gem and lucky for the locals. The clue threw us a bit maybe interpreted wrong but cache was extremely close. TFTC.
After heading down the backroads of the tablelands, I found this great little spot
Nobody around today, but the locals had obviously been here recently, judging by the amount of rubbish they had left here [:o]
I don't get it !! Why s#*t in you're own backyard ?
Anyhoo, somewhere up the track a bit there was a likely cache hiding place.
Nup!!
Or maybe the nearby spot was a likely cache hiding place ?
Yup!!

"real" late log ....
no real excuses - would like to say that I have been occupied
but really - just slack, trying to redeem myself and get back into caching
starting with cleaning up my logs - apologies.
cache notes from our 2012 Christmas trip to FNQ
after staying with relatives in Malanda
decided to try and grab a few caches befor heading back south
first miss of the day
found our way out there and had (what I thought was) a good look
but came up with naught
nice spot
cheers, apologies for my tardiness & TFTC - even if I haven't found it yet

Hi all,
Weather has relented a little so Val and I went for a run up to see why there has been two "did Not Finds" for this cache. Cache has disappeared. I have replaced it, but in a slightly different position in case those responsible return. Until it has been in its new position unmuggled for a while, I don't think it would be a good idea to put travel bugs or geocoins in it.
Cheers,
Dan

Hi all,
This should be a relatively easy find. With two "could not finds" running it looks as though it has been muggled. So I'll disable it until the weather clears enough to go and check it out.

Nice remote area to get to, however GZ seemed to be rather barren of a cache. Cheers Gav
Lots of surface water pooled on the tracks leading in to this cache. From the description, the GZ was located easily enough.
The cache and its contents were dry, but the protective plastic bag mentioned in the description is no longer evident. The swimming hole has atorrent of water passing over it at present. Will be a nice spot when the water subsides. Took nothing and left nothing.

Had to wait whilst some muggles enjoyed lunch nearby but after they left it was a quick grab
KiwiANNa and I have semi finished a couple more projects around home and are waiting for the funds to build up, hence the renewed interest in geocaching. GPS went a bit hay wire as we neared the site due to overhead foiliage. As we neared the site the additional hints were a bit hard to discern due to fairly rampant growth. When we arrived we went down to the swimming hole, which wifey reminded me that we had visited some 22 years ago on a previous holiday to the region. All in all a pleasant little trek. We actually remembered to get our box of swaps out this time, though only left a Kiwi flag.
Was raining so didn't spent much time. Even driving the dirt road with the whip birds calling made me smile. Thanks
This was a very pretty spot that probably only the locals would know about, it was such a shame that when we visited the day after the long weekend there was rubbish left and the place the cache has been hidden had been used as a toilet spot. Some people just dont appreciate what they have.
Thanks for showing us this pretty place anyway.

This was our last find while having a caching weekend in the Tablelands. The good old Ford sedan once again went 4WD and took us right up to GZ. The prickly vine referred to in the last log is still guarding the cache hide, so Ballbag decided to come at it from behind. He was rewarded and soon handed the container to Bumblebee who signed the logbook. TNLN. TFTC.

Our eigth find on the tableland this weekend. A lovely drive to the cache, and one we would never have done had it not been for geocaching. Cache was found quickly, but we had to be careful to negotiate the large and prickly vine guarding the hiding spot. Took a purple necklace, left a heart shaped pill box. TFTC.
We approached this cache from the East using some forgotten small roads passing through pastures. But then we dipped into an unexpected remnant of lovely bush with water flowing through it.
It was a deviation welcomed by us going further South today.
Unfortunately we left our selection of swapping goodies home.

Lovely drive in on a quiet country road. Found cache easily and then wandered over to the amazing swimming hole nearby. Looks like it is popular as there is litter around.
Detoured on our way home to grab this one. Followed another car to the GZ, then they left. I was thinking they may be fellow cachers but I think they were just plain lost.
Found cache easily and swaps done.

Was getting dark and drizzly by the time we got to this one. Mac had a less than ideal encounter with the spiky vine that guarded the direct route to the cache. Took a less direct and much safer route out.
